Protecting who, exactly? If Dangote decides to shut down the refinery, would the unions even have a say? Both sides should find a way to accommodate each other, but let’s be honest—Dangote holds both the knife and the cake in this situation.
He holds the knife and cake then he should sleaze na since he has both. If he doesn't come to compromise he will be losing man-hours. He has been pampered for too long.
PENGASSAN cannot be threatened so you guys should know that.
PENGASSAN is everybody in the oil industry so it's a joke too far to say they should be disbanded as some people would say.

Two things I have noticed. Politicians and Big businessmen in Nigeria engage in "PR" or propaganda to build narratives. Many are working for them on Nairaland and twitter and other social medica. Also, many Nigerians are used to sufferhead. Dont waste your time fighting for Nigerians or what is good or moral or right. In the end evil always wins in Nigeria. Being good is a waste of time.

Dangote is looking for people he will pay peanuts, not conform to any labor law and free to fire anytime if they get out of line. He will have been a good and successful slavemaster.

I would like to know if PENGASSAN is a statutory body or just an association that was formed by 3 or 4 people that got approval from CAC?.
I also want to know if it is against the law for a private company to discourage unionism among its staff. But the company employees' renumeration and other benefits are in line with best practice obtainable in the sector the company is operating.

I believe around 1.41 billion liters were consumed in August—dividing that by 30 gives the average daily consumption. Honestly, unionizing and layoffs are just symptoms of a deeper issue neither side wants to address. We need to understand what Dangote risks if unions are allowed, and what unions stand to gain. All the talk about workers’ welfare seems like an afterthought.
As per your data would be nice to quote the source cos I believe there is difficulty harmonizing the data. I agree there are deeper issues ,and in my opinion it relates to government, policies and the need to do what is right. As per unionizing, I think Dangote doesn’t want disruption to his business in
any guise, there are many disruptive factors apart from Union,in my view, the Union can provide some competitive advantage .I have witnessed first hand,in upstream business was it 2015 when oil price was at about $25 ,where Pengassan in an IOC introduced a cost-saving Initiative by sharing deck spaces for different routes/ ship, this was implemented and the model still in use in that IOC.If given the opportunity, beyond, strikes, salaries and increases which I feel is what Dangote thinks unionizing of its workers will bring,PENGASSAN is indeed a force for positive change and sustainable growth. He should just look at the brighter side

Anyone who has worked in a corporate environment will know that your employer cannot love you more than your Union.

The Nigerian law clearly stipulates workers to have a Union when their strength exceeds a minimum number

But because Dangote is the first man, and first oil company to exist on earth, we should burn the Nigerian constitution.

No wonder Chinese and Indian firms don't take us seriously. Anything goes in Nigeria.
Resign from your employer that hate you and work for the union that love you.

Infact, go to CAC, get certificate and employ the Union that love you.

My friend, Nobody love you more or less, Union activity is not benefiting 230 million Nigerians, it's benefiting a few

If I was an exco in NUPENG or NLC, I will fully support PENGASSON because their activity benefits our hustle.

Nigerians need to fight for their interest

The Constitution gave them free will to join any Union if they wish, ... Saying that they can not be forced to join neither denied their right to join if they wish. But Dangote did not want that. Which if you use a common sense he is denying the thier right to unionism which is against the law.
Pengassan is telling you that Dangote broke the law which in the future will affect the industry. And the welfare of Nigerians.
There is a trust gap. How has PENGASSAN helped the industry and the citizens in the last 40 years? Can PENGASSAN come out to list some ways they have helped Nigerians, apart from themselves? If they have not helped, what is the prospect of helping in the future?

Your reasons might not be 100% correct. However, people that work
In his cement industry can tell you more... On how he treats workers.
Lastly Dangote sacked those employees not because they're wicked (Nigerians) but because they joined the Workers Union. Had it been they did not. He would still work with them no matter how wicked they're!.
Alol, My lil brother worked there n i know some of his colleagues ... does he flog them if they come late or what punishment does he give to them

Lets look at it these way, Since Dangote refinery started .. every stakeholder in that mainstream n downstream have tried to frustrare him .. NNpc to NDMPRA to Dappman ... the union as the last shot

They know Dangote dont want union, .. maybe they lured is workers to push for Union so it a perfect excuse to ground Dangote refinery .. they know dangote position on union he wont back down perfect Trap to sabotage him ... just thinkin aloud

I no how evil Nigerians can be, nobody want you to succeed, they promise your staff watery amount those one sef go sharply work against you
Re: PENGASSAN And Dangote Reconciliation Meeting Ends In Deadlock by Dee60: 2:33pm On Sep 30, 2025
PENGASSAN may not realize that a lot of people dont trust them. They have outlived their relevance after years and decades of hobnobbing with politicians and rulers to the detriment of the industry they claim to protect. What is left of that industry today apart from the private operators like DR, SEPLAT, etc?

NNPC, Shell, Chevron, Mobil, Total, NLNG etc. the staffs of all those companies made up PENGASSAN. Then which one is that they should build their own refinery.
Given your disagreement with the idea that PENGASSAN should construct its own refinery, you might consider an alternative course of action: building your own refinery and allowing all your employees to become members of PENGASSAN. What do you think? grin

The Nigerian labour law compels him to have a Union. You think PENGASSAN woke up and picked on him?

All Oil companies in Nigeria have a Union for its staff. It's a Labour law in Nigeria. PENGASSAN did not write the law. Nigeria did.

So he either forms that Union, or follows your advice to sell it off. Shebi he has yam and knife?
But does a union have the power to instruct its members not to provide a service which their employer has guaranteed to the target? Shouldn’t the target’s workers be on the strike and not other industry players?

While it’s clear that you lean in favor of PENGASSAN and NUPENG, I truly appreciate the respectful tone and the thoughtfulness of your arguments. I agree that unions can indeed be valuable partners in progress—especially when their core interests are genuinely at stake.

That said, I personally don’t believe Dangote is primarily concerned about salaries or worker welfare—perhaps about the potential for strikes. Even then, that alone doesn’t justify an outright rejection of unionization. It feels like there’s more to this story—something both parties are deliberately withholding from the public. Unfortunately, whatever that is seems to reflect poorly on both sides, particularly the unions.

It’s also worth noting: the refinery has been operational for over a year—so why now? Why is this surfacing just as Dangote begins direct distribution using his CNG trucks, which reportedly cut transport costs by about 40% compared to existing alternatives? Did salaries and working conditions suddenly become intolerable?

We need to look beyond the surface and resist the pull of emotionally charged narratives. There’s more here than meets the eye.

Saboteurs. The real Pengassan are not the people sacked by Dangote. They are the stinkingly rich labour leaders who sit under ac and whose pot of soup will be thrown away. They are the actual enemies of the people. Dangote as a company protects the welfare of his workers better that these wolves and wild beasts. They will never go on strike over hunger, insecurity and inadiquate minimum wage. They would prefer to go on strike to punish millions and cause fuel scarcity.
Ignorance is a disease. Who told you Dangote protects the welfare of his workforce??

For your info, he pays meager salary compared to other companies in thesame sector.

Which Nigerian workers are replaced by Indians ? Do you think there are no laws that states the number of foreigners that can work in a company in Nigeria.
The Union just want to be in a position to call the shots at Dangote Refinery. Why must everyone join there Union? Can't Dangote staff form there own union. So they want to force workers on Dangote Refinery ba? The Dangote Refinery knows whats best for them and they should be allowedd to employ and sack whomever they want. If you want to work at the Refinery, you must obey their rules
Dude, Dangote has managed to maneuver the expats qouta ratio to that of the Nigerian workers. Too many Indians and Chinese in that facility...way beyond the expatriate quota. But he gets away with it because the Local Content Board is cooperating with his underhand dealings.

Imagine having equal votes with someone with this kind of thinking. Many Nigerians go to school but are uneducated. A workers union is meant to protect the rights of workers in the union and is recognized by our labor laws and not to build refineries. Nigerians are so used to being mistreated at work that they can't even phantom that they should have rights to fair treatment.
I just tire for some of the ignorant folks defending Dangote's unfriendly workplace dealings... truly Nigerians deserve the kind of leaders they have undecided
