According to the Al Jazeera English report on Tuesday September 30, 2025, Ukraine has formally requested long-range Tomahawk missiles from the United States to bolster its defensive capabilities against Russian forces, potentially enabling strikes deep into Russian territory. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made the appeal during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the United Nations General Assembly.

While previous U.S. administrations imposed restrictions on using American weapons for attacks inside Russia, the current administration is evaluating the request, with officials indicating limited approvals for specific deep strikes already in place.

Russia has reacted strongly, viewing the potential supply of Tomahawks as a "red line" that could escalate the conflict into direct NATO involvement. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized Moscow's close monitoring, questioning whether Ukrainians or Americans would handle targeting and launches.

High-level warnings from figures like former President Dmitry Medvedev have raised specters of nuclear escalation, though analysts dismiss these as rhetorical tactics to deter Western aid.

The Tomahawk missiles, developed by the U.S. Navy since the 1970s, are subsonic cruise weapons with ranges up to 2,500 kilometers, capable of penetrating hardened targets like bunkers. Their low-altitude flight paths evade radar, offering superior reach compared to systems like the UK's Storm Shadow or U.S. ATACMS. In the context of Russia's 2022 invasion, these missiles could disrupt Russian logistics and command structures, shifting the strategic balance without necessarily forcing a withdrawal.

This development occurs against a backdrop of heightened provocations, including Russian airspace violations over NATO countries and stalled peace efforts. Potential escalations include Russia resuming nuclear-capable missile production, though direct confrontation with NATO remains unlikely. Zelenskyy posits that possessing such weapons could pressure Russia toward negotiations, underscoring the need for diplomatic channels to avert further instability in Europe.
