OPINION: PDP Must Expel Wike Now or Risk Golgotha

The recent open endorsement of Christopher Maikalangu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election, by Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a member of our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is the final straw that should break the camel’s back.

This is not just another case of indiscipline. It is an act of brazen anti-party activity that strikes at the very soul of our party. If the PDP national leadership under Ambassador Umar Damagun does not act decisively to expel Wike from our fold, we risk sending the wrong message to loyal members and ordinary Nigerians who still believe in our capacity to rescue the country in 2027.

This is not the first time Wike has undermined the PDP. In his home state of Rivers, he openly identified with APC candidates and chieftains, brazenly mocking our own candidates. He has created a political culture where loyalty to the PDP is measured by how much you can insult the party leadership and still get away with it.

Now, in the heart of Nigeria’s capital, he has dared to endorse the APC candidate, even when our party has a credible flagbearer in Zadna Dintani. This is unforgivable. The FCT is not Rivers State, where Wike has been allowed to hold sway and dictate to party leaders. Here, the youths, the grassroots, and genuine stakeholders will not allow one man’s arrogance and hubris to sink the PDP.

The PDP was built on discipline, loyalty, and a shared commitment to democratic ideals. Chief Olabode George, a respected elder statesman of our party, once said: “Any political organisation without discipline will end up in disarray.”

How then do we explain Wike’s actions? His repeated endorsement of APC candidates and his constant disparagement of the PDP leadership is the height of indiscipline. We cannot look away simply because he has deep pockets or because he currently serves in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet. Wike has chosen to ride on our back and destroy us from within.

As we march towards the 2027 general elections, we cannot afford to go into battle with saboteurs in our ranks. The time has come to remove the bad eggs—those whose loyalty is not to the PDP but to their personal egos or their new friends in the ruling APC.

If we fail to act now, then we are inviting disaster. We are allowing our detractors to take the PDP to Golgotha, to crucify the very hope of millions of Nigerians who look to us for redemption from the economic hardship, insecurity, and despair inflicted by the APC.

Former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus once reminded us: “The PDP is not a personal estate of anybody. It is a collective project, and those who do not respect its values cannot remain in its fold.” His words remain true today. Wike has proven time and again that he does not respect the PDP’s values.

This is the time for our National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagun, to show courage. Leadership is not about appeasing the loudest or the richest. Leadership is about protecting the integrity of the institution you have been entrusted with.

If Damagun wants to be remembered as a man who stood firm when the PDP was under siege, then he must summon the courage to recommend Wike’s expulsion. Anything short of that will embolden other saboteurs to follow Wike’s path.

We must not forget that in politics, timing is everything. If we wait until 2026 or 2027 to discipline Wike, it will be too late. By then, he would have caused irreversible damage, undermined our candidates, and weakened our structures. The time to act is now.

Expelling Wike will not only cleanse the PDP of his constant sabotage; it will also send a clear message to every member that loyalty is not optional. It will demonstrate that no matter your influence, no matter your association with the ruling party, you cannot mock the PDP and remain in its fold.

This is the only way to restore confidence among our members. This is the only way to assure the likes of Zadna Dintani and countless other candidates across the country that the PDP will stand by them, not betray them.

Let us be clear: the PDP is better off without Wike and his ilk. They bring nothing but discord, confusion, and betrayal. We must not allow ourselves to be blackmailed into believing that the party cannot survive without them.

Our strength has always been in our grassroots, in our ordinary members, in our commitment to the Nigerian people. Those who think they are bigger than the PDP must be shown the exit door.

The PDP has a choice to make. Do we continue to tolerate Wike’s arrogance and anti-party activities, or do we rise above sentiment and show Nigerians that we are serious about discipline and internal cohesion?

For me, as a committed PDP chieftain in the FCT, the answer is clear. We must expel Wike now. As a party, we must remember that discipline is not negotiable. Loyalty is not optional. The PDP is greater than any individual, and it is time we proved that.

PDP only exists in our subconscious cos they used to be the biggest party in Africa. With their key figures moving to ADC now,PDP is dead. Just waiting to be buried.
