10 Things Only Lagosians Will Understand On Independence Day by phosky(op): 7:26am On Oct 01, 2025
Independence Day in Lagos isn’t just a public holiday—it’s a full-on city-wide vibe. From street jams to family feasts, here’s what truly makes the day special for Lagosians. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

1. The Jollof Rice Debate Is Real

Every household suddenly becomes a culinary judge: “Who cooked the best jollof this year?” Expect aunties, uncles, and even your neighbour’s kids to argue fiercely over whose rice reigns supreme. Lagosians know this debate is sacred and non-negotiable.

2. Traffic Is Practically a National Sport

Whether you’re going to a street party or visiting family, Lagos traffic ensures that your Independence Day plans are always “fashionably late.” Bonus points if you can take a photo of your stuck car and caption it: “Freedom in Lagos, Naija style.”

3. Lagos Island Becomes a Parade Ground

While Abuja may host official parades, Lagos goes big in its own chaotic way. Streets come alive with flags, local bands, and sometimes surprise performances by street dancers. If you’ve witnessed it, you know: nothing says Independence Day like dodging traffic while watching a marching band.

4. The “Naija Vibes” Street Parties

Pop-up street parties spring up everywhere—from Lekki to Surulere. Lagosians know the drill: music blasting, friends shouting, and everyone trying to claim they were “here before the crowd.”

5. Independence Day Selfies Are Mandatory

From Lekki’s beaches to Ikeja’s parks, Lagosians love to document the day. The hashtags #NaijaAt63 (or whatever the year is) flood social media. Bonus points if your photo captures both your outfit and the chaotic energy of Lagos streets.

6. The Fashion Show Is Real

It’s not just about wearing green and white; Lagosians go all out. Traditional attire gets mixed with streetwear, and suddenly, your Instagram feed becomes a mini Naija fashion week.

7. Lagos Market Adventures

Markets like Balogun and Oshodi become Independence Day hotspots. Expect crowds, bargain wars, and the occasional dramatic family reunion while shopping for celebratory food. Only Lagosians can survive the chaos and still leave with their hands full.

8. Waiting for the National Anthem… Kinda

Some events start with the national anthem, but Lagos time is a thing. You’ll wait, and wait, and maybe clap along randomly while someone figures out the mic. It’s all part of the charm.

9. The Lagos Skyline Is a Celebration

From rooftop hangouts in Victoria Island to the view from Third Mainland Bridge, Lagosians know the city lights look extra magical on Independence Day. It’s a subtle reminder: Lagos is always alive, even when the country’s economy isn’t.

10. The Aftermath Is Real

Once the celebrations are over, Lagosians are left with a mix of satisfaction, exhaustion, and a fridge full of leftover jollof. And yet, everyone secretly starts planning next year’s Independence Day before the current one ends.

Lagosians of today or Lagosians of 1961?

Sadly Nigerians ain't seeing any reasons to celebrate whatsoever. During PDP era one can conveniently travel on road from SS to the north and no form of kidnapping or whatsoever. Try it today if you get mind let's see if you'll come back alive!

I doubt if any of these happen again.

School children and various organisations and trade unions will normally be at various stadia across the country on this day.

Many things have changed.

This same lagos where I am presently or another one ? It's like you used chat gpt or some AI to write this crap. Who has time to be cooking jollof and celebrating on the street. We live in a country where every hard working person have to strive to succeed on their own without any direct or indirect help from its government. Instead the government even continuously roll out policies to make thriving even more difficult. So tell me, why will a sane person cook jollof and celebrate on the street because of independence ?

Comot number 1, jollof rice is debated all over Nigeria and nobody cooks to celebrate independence again maybe back in the 80's but today it just another day.

This is a very dumb write up.

Imagine starting an Independence Day talk with jollof rice
Re: 10 Things Only Lagosians Will Understand On Independence Day by Kalulu44: 11:52am On Oct 01, 2025
Nothing celebratory about October 1st again.
Gone are the days when almost all students and schools wants to be at the stadium for match past.
Gone are the days when you will see green and white flags at every junction and street corners in independent day.
Nothing fascinating anymore about Naija Independent as almost everyone face their day to day business as if Nigeria is not celebrating anything.
Even today as I am typing, I haven't seen any flags or children dress in green white green.
Naija matter don tire everybody
