NEWS

A coalition of 130 Pan Yoruba groups has petitioned the United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, warning of an alleged plan by terrorist forces to wage war on the Yoruba people of Western Nigeria.

In a letter signed by the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movements (AYDM) and sent to Guterres, the groups said the September 17, 2025 killing of 15 people in Oke-Ode community, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, was carried out by “Fulani terrorists” and should be seen as a prelude to a wider invasion of Yoruba territories.

AYDM stated that “the mass murder of 15 people in Kwara, including women and children by Fulani terrorists was a prelude to mass invasion of Yoruba territories by heavily armed terrorists who are known for their thirst for blood and human flesh.”

The group further alleged that Yoruba people have suffered over a century of violence from extremists.

“The Yoruba people have endured more than a century of violence and torture in the hands of extremists since the 1804 Jihad was launched describing the latest string of violence as the continuation of the extremists’ desire to impose on the people a theocratic state where democracy is seen as a crime,” it said.

According to the AYDM, Nigerian security operatives were compromised, while some political actors allegedly colluded with the terrorists, making resolution of the crisis difficult.

The group cited a series of past attacks, including the killing of traditional rulers such as the Olufon of Ifon, Oba Israel Adeusi (November 2020), the Onimojo of Imojo, Oba Olatunde Samuel Olusola, the Elesun of Esun, Oba David Babatunde Ogunsona, and the bombing of St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State in June 2022, where 40 worshippers were killed by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

AYDM Secretary General, Popoola Ajayi, who signed the petition, warned: “The UN Secretary General, the time to act is nigh. Unprecedented killings that may be comparable to Rwanda is about to happen in Nigeria. It is the struggle between indigenous peoples and terrorists who unfortunately now have a stronghold across indigenous territories where they have seized and occupied, waiting for the whistle of terror for them to unleash mayhem, killings and misery on our people.”

The petition urged the UN to compel Nigeria to uphold the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP); convene an emergency Security Council meeting on Nigeria to push for restructuring and self-determination; and dissuade Ukraine from allegedly fueling terrorism in the Sahel.

AYDM expressed concern about Ukraine’s alleged role, stating: “Ukraine increasingly has become active participant in the conflict in Africa to the detriment of indigenous people.

“AYDM urged the UN Secretary General to note that Andriy Yusov, the spokesperson for Ukrainian Military intelligence admitted Ukraine’s role in barbaric and heinous terrorist acts now being committed in the Sahel with dangerous signposts for the people in Nigeria. The UN needs to dissuade Ukraine from promoting and fueling terrorism in Africa.”

Ajayi added: “These three steps are critical to preventing genocide from full blown in Nigeria. If the UN fails to act now, Nigeria is certain to witness Africa’s worst blood birth. The UN will share in the blame if nothing is done and at the right time.”

The petition was endorsed by several groups including O’odua Peoples Congress (OPC-New Era), O’odua Nationalist Coalition (ONAC), Network for Yoruba Alliance (NENA), South West Professionals Forum (SOWPROF), Okun Peoples Association (OPA), Yoruba Artisans and Traders Association (YATA), and Kwara Indigenous Peoples League (KIPL), among others.

The groups stressed: “The Yoruba people are peace-loving. We detest violence but are not going to watch helplessly the killing of our people by rogues and armed bandits while the national and international authorities do nothing. The UN needs to be pro-active. Genocide in Nigeria being planned by Fulani terrorists and their sponsors is a disaster waiting to happen.

“The International community can take many actions to prevent this misery. We are not a weak people. We have a long history of courage, valour and resilience.

“The Yoruba people do not want war but will not run away from defending our ancestral land with the last breath and the last drop of our blood. But there is an opportunity for the UN to prevent the war in the first place.”

The AYDM concluded by reminding Guterres of his responsibility, saying, “We draw your attention to your historic responsibility of preventing war when the time is ripe. It will be wrong for the UN to be holding meetings only after the crime of genocide has been committed.”

130 Pan-Yoruba Groups Urge South West States To Replace Electricity Firms, Hail Lagos For Issuing Licences To New Companies

NEWS

A coalition of 130 pan-Yoruba socio-political and professional groups has called on all South West states to establish new electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) to replace the existing operators, accusing them of “gross corporate irresponsibility” and “crimes against the people.”

The call comes as the Lagos State Government officially granted new electricity distribution licenses to Excel Distribution Company and IE Energy Lagos Limited, effectively replacing Eko Electricity Distribution PLC and Ikeja Electric PLC.

The move marks a significant shift in the state’s power sector, with the new firms expected to assume operations within the coming months.

In a statement issued after its Executive Council meeting on Monday, the Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movements (AYDM), which coordinated the coalition, hailed the Lagos initiative as “the most important public interest decision in Lagos since 1999.”

“The decision represents a radical departure from gross corporate irresponsibility to a new frontier in the search for energy stability in Lagos State,” the statement signed by the AYDM Secretary, Popoola Ajayi, and Mobilisation Director, Chief Kunle Oshodi, read.

The AYDM applauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for their “bold step in liberating residents from years of oppression by exploitative energy companies.”

The coalition, which includes groups such as the Oodua Nationalist Coalition (ONAC), Agbekoya, Yoruba Artisans and Traders Association (YATA), Nigerian Automobile Technicians Association (NATA–South West), Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC–New Era), and the South West Women Congress (SWECO), also urged the Lagos and the Nigerian Governments to probe the ownership and operations of the former DISCOs.

AYDM accused the companies of endangering lives through abrupt disconnections, power surges, and negligence, which have led to fatal accidents.

“Many people have died due to the activities of these DISCOs in hospitals, homes, and workplaces. Their actions amount to economic sabotage,” the statement said.

It added that the group plans to document “the atrocities of the DISCOs” in a forthcoming publication and will lobby the international community to impose sanctions on their operators.

Nigeria’s electricity sector has long been plagued by instability.

Despite successive reforms and privatisation efforts since 2013, power generation and supply remain grossly inadequate.

The national grid has collapsed over 150 times in the past decade, often plunging the country into nationwide blackouts.

With a generation capacity hovering between 3,000 and 4,000 megawatts for over 200 million people, Nigeria’s energy deficit has crippled industries, worsened unemployment, and forced millions of households to rely on expensive diesel and petrol generators.

The AYDM likened the current operators to the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), widely criticised for inefficiency before its unbundling.

“The DISCOs are worse than NEPA. They are corrupt, arrogant, and incompetent. They see Lagosians as commodities to be brutally exploited,” AYDM stated.

The AYDM alleged that claims of customer debts by DISCOs were largely “fictitious and fraudulent, designed to extort individuals and businesses.”

The coalition urged other South West governors, in Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states, to replicate Lagos’ initiative, saying the move could rescue the region’s economy from collapse.

“When there is no efficient electricity, businesses, health facilities, and industries suffer while the social and night economy crumbles. Lagos has taken the first step; others must follow,” AYDM said.

The AYDM also encouraged Lagos to explore cleaner energy sources, including converting the state’s large volumes of daily waste into power, to ensure sustainability and energy security.

Yorubas are more concerned about what is happening in lagos. They don't care about the 5 SW states.

Terrorists from Sahel can take over kwara down to osun, Oyo, ekiti, ogun etc. They don't care!! That's the bitter truth.

They are in Lagos chasing what is not chasing them. Once lagos is Ok. The remaining SW states can go to hell.

Have you see them talks about the killings, genocide and occupation on people in kwara. No! Why, they don't care.

You just spoke my mind, How can the president and almost all the security chiefs be Yoruba people and yet they are crying for help.

Isn't it clear most of them supported Tinubu just for bragging rights and to mock a certain people, I mean these guys don't even call Tinubu out, that's why I'm not taking any Yoruba person shouting state police seriously.

Why? Initially they told us only Tinubu can fight Fulani and that Peter Obi is a weakling and Atiku is Fulani, now Tinubu is there failing to even protect them, they are now putting the blame on state police creation, if state police is created and they see it is failing, they look for another thing to start blaming....

Just for a second imagine if it was the Igbos that was killing people all over Nigeria and killing the Yorubas under a Yoruba president, imagine what they would started doing to the Igbos from these very same people, this is a serious matter that concerns them, see how they all avoided the thread.

Yoruba Union Hails US Congress Over Bill To Ban Fulani Herdsmen, Demands Sanctions For Tinubu, IGP Egbetokun, Others
November 6, 2025
NEWS

The Yoruba Union, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has applauded the United States Congress for proposing a bill seeking to ban Fulani herders, including the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, along with some top Nigerian government officials allegedly involved in violent attacks and negotiations with Fulani militias responsible for killings across Nigeria.

This was contained in a statement released on Thursday by the Union convener, Olusola Badero, through its Home Director, Princess Balogun.

The group commended the US lawmakers for taking what it described as “a historic step toward justice and accountability” for victims of herders’ violence in the South-West and other parts of Nigeria.

According to the statement, the Union expressed deep frustration that despite several years of appeals to the international community — including the European Union and the United Nations — no decisive action had been taken to curb the atrocities committed by armed Fulani herders.

“For too long, Yoruba communities have suffered untold hardship at the hands of marauding Fulani herdsmen who have killed hundreds of innocent people, kidnapped women and children, raped young girls, and destroyed thousands of farmlands,” the group said.

“Entire villages have been wiped out, and many Yoruba people have been displaced from their ancestral homes across Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Kwara, and Kogi States.”

Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá explained that the continued attacks have left countless children orphaned, many women widowed, and several men widowers due to what it called “the Nigerian government’s failure to protect its citizens.”

The group accused federal authorities of being complicit in the violence, claiming that instead of confronting the perpetrators, the government has chosen to negotiate with them.

“The inability of the Nigerian government to secure lives and property has made them complicit in the mass killings across the country. The same government that should have ordered the military to flush out these criminals now sits at the negotiation table with them — collecting ransoms, tolerating their violence, and reintegrating them into society under the guise of rehabilitation,” the Yoruba Union added.

The Yoruba Union further called on the U.S. Congress to go beyond the proposed ban by imposing comprehensive sanctions on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members of his administration, and the leadership of Nigeria’s security agencies.

The group urged Washington to suspend all foreign aid to Nigeria, arguing that the assistance has not improved the living conditions of ordinary citizens.

“President Tinubu’s government has made life unbearable for Nigerians through anti-people economic policies that have crippled millions of businesses, heightened poverty, and worsened insecurity,” the Union stated.

“We are calling on the U.S. government to sanction Tinubu, all senators, members of the House of Representatives, and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for human rights violations, corruption, and failure to protect Nigerians.”

The Yoruba advocacy group also urged the U.S. President to revoke the visas of all Nigerian public officials and their family members, arguing that those in power continue to enjoy privileges abroad while neglecting their citizens at home.

However, the Union called on the U.S. Congress to compel the Nigerian government to compensate all victims of herders’ violence, including families of those killed, injured, and farmers whose livelihoods were destroyed.

It also demanded an immediate halt to the government’s controversial programme of rehabilitating and reintegrating so-called “repentant terrorists” into Nigerian communities, describing it as a threat to national security and peace.

Alleged Genocide: Igbo American Veterans Call For Establishment Of US Military Base In Nigeria
November 7, 2025
NEWS

The American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), a US-based veterans’ organisation, has written to the US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, calling for the establishment of a United States military base in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

In the letter dated November 6 and signed by AVID President, Dr. Sylvester Unyia and Secretary, Dr. Godson Obiagwu, the group thanked Secretary Hegseth for his “unwavering support in tackling the Christian genocide in Nigeria” and urged concrete action to deter further violence.

AVID is made up of American citizens of Igbo descent who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The group said its members have deep cultural and geographical knowledge of the affected areas in southeastern Nigeria, which they believe uniquely positions them to support US engagement in the region.

“We know the topography of the areas affected, their mindset, culture, and comprehend fully the magnitude of this problem,” the letter stated.

“A permanent solution is the only way to resolve this Christian genocide. Establishing a U.S. military base (in Nigeria) will be the genesis of resolving this issue, as it will serve as a deterrent to these perpetrators.”

AVID also accused the Nigerian government of spreading “lies and propaganda” about the ongoing violence, adding that its members were “ready and standing by to render any form of assistance.”

The veterans concluded the letter with an expression of loyalty to both the United States and President Donald Trump, writing, “May God bless you, Sir. Long live Donald J. Trump, and long live the United States of America.”

SaharaReporters had reported that President Trump’s decision to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern split the country.
SaharaReporters had also reported that President Trump again said the United States would not stand by while 'Christians are being killed' in Nigeria.

In a speech seen by SaharaReporters, he again reiterated that he has designated Nigeria a “country of particular concern” over what he described as large-scale killings of Christians, and warned that Washington could cut aid or even take military action if the violence continues.

“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria, thousands and thousands of Christians are being killed, radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a country of particular concern, that is a legal definition,” Trump wrote in a social-media post.

He drew attention to global figures and urged rapid action from U.S. lawmakers. “When the Christians or any such group is slaughtered like it's happening in Nigeria 3100 Vs 4476 Worldwide, what horrible numbers.”

Trump called on members of Congress to move quickly, singling out appropriations leaders.

“Something has to be done, I am asking Congressman Riley Moore together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee to immediately look into this matter to report back to me, I mean like immediately.”

He added that the United States could intervene to protect religious minorities. “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria and other countries.

“It's not only in Nigeria, it's all over. We are able and willing to defend Christians, the killing of Christians, it is not going to happen.”

The Nigerian government has rejected the characterisation and pushed back against the claim that the violence amounts to targeted genocide, saying the country's constitution protects all faiths and that security challenges affect communities across religious lines.

Last Friday, President Trump announced that, in response to claims of genocide against Christians in Nigeria, he had redesignated the country as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

He made the announcement on his Truth Social media platform, writing: “Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Terrorists Now Dictating To Tinubu Government; He Should Resign – Yoruba Union Says As States Shut Schools
November 22, 2025
NEWS

The Yoruba socio-cultural group, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of losing control of Nigeria’s security architecture, following the increasing shutdown of schools due to terrorist attacks and mass abductions.

The Union said the decision of some state governments to close schools in response to rising insecurity is a dangerous signal that terrorists have effectively begun dictating the country’s security priorities.

According to the group, such developments are a clear indication that the Tinubu administration is no longer in charge of national security.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Union’s Convener, Olusola Badero, and released through its Home Director, Princess Balogun, who lamented what she described as the “paralysis and indecision” of the federal government in confronting violent armed groups.

The Union said the terrorists have turned kidnapping into a booming, well-coordinated business enterprise because of what it called the government’s failure to dismantle the networks responsible for the abductions ravaging the country.

According to them, the government’s preference for negotiating with terrorists—rather than eliminating them—has emboldened armed groups, allowing them to collect ransoms, retain their weapons, and expand their operations with little resistance.

The statement read, “If shutting down schools is now the government’s best strategy to prevent mass abductions, then it is obvious President Tinubu has lost the war against terrorism.

“Dialogue has failed repeatedly. Ransom payments have become routine. What this means is that Nigeria is no longer in control of its own security architecture—terrorists are.”

The Union stated that the closure of schools, is amounts to surrendering the education sector to terrorists who now operate with near-total freedom.

Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá further explained that many of the attackers are linked to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, insisting that the federal government must immediately designate the group as a terrorist organisation — “except President Tinubu chooses to protect them.”

The group referenced the shocking abduction of 305 students and 12 teachers in Niger State, insisting that the operation demonstrated a level of coordination and audacity that exposes deep failures within Nigeria’s security institutions.

Yoruba Union also listed recent attacks such as the Eruku church abduction and the kidnapping of 25 female students in Kebbi State as examples of the government’s inability to anticipate or prevent large-scale violent crimes.

The Union warned that terrorists have already infiltrated parts of the Southwest but that the federal government has failed to launch any major surveillance or counter-terrorism operations to flush them out.

According to the group, farming communities across Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara and part of Kogi States are now on edge, with many residents abandoning their farmlands due to fear of attack.

They further accused the Tinubu administration of refusing to empower local hunters and vigilantes with modern weapons capable of neutralising armed groups—insisting that these community security outfits are more familiar with the terrain than federal forces.

The Union said Nigeria is bleeding from every corner, while those entrusted with protecting citizens appear helpless, overwhelmed, and more concerned with 2027 politics than with saving lives.

The group criticised what they described as the President’s “obsession” with political survival ahead of the 2027 elections, alleging that the government is more concerned with consolidating political power than tackling the current wave of terror, economic hardship, and national instability.

“While the country bleeds, President Tinubu appears more concerned with securing a life sentence for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“Justice Omotosho’s ruling reads like a script from Aso Rock. Meanwhile, has Kanu’s imprisonment stopped killings or kidnappings? Absolutely not," the Union ask.

Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá demanded the immediate resignation of President Tinubu, accusing him of lacking the political will, competence, and strategy required to govern a complex security-challenged country like Nigeria.

“It is now clear that President Tinubu has run out of ideas. He refuses to take responsibility for the collapse of the country’s security system. Nigeria is burning, and his administration is watching helplessly,” they added.

With schools being closed, communities deserted, and terrorists growing bolder, the Yoruba Union insists that unless decisive action is taken immediately, Nigeria risks sliding further into a state where armed groups — not the government — determine the future of education, national safety, and territorial control.

SaharaReporters
According to the group, such developments are a clear indication that the Tinubu administration is no longer in charge of national security.

Afenifere Faction Backs Trump Over US Christmas Day Airstrikes On Terrorists In Sokoto

Pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has expressed strong support for the United States military’s attack on terrorists in North-Western Nigeria on Christmas Day.

In a statement issued on Friday, Afenifere's Organising Secretary, Kole Omololu, described the strikes as “timely and necessary.”

Omololu said the actions of the US government deserved commendation, noting that terrorist groups had wreaked havoc across several northern states.

He stated, “The recent confirmation by the Defence Headquarters that the joint air strikes conducted by Nigerian and United States military forces against ISIS terrorist elements in North-West Nigeria were executed with the approval of the appropriate Federal Government authorities is both timely and necessary.

"Afenifere unequivocally supports this decisive action, which comes after years of relentless insecurity that has held communities hostage and undermined the very fabric of the nation. At this critical juncture, the involvement of the United States in the ongoing counter-terrorism operations deserves recognition, not condemnation. For far too long, innocent Nigerians have been subjected to relentless attacks, abductions and wanton destruction of property, while insufficient measures were taken to decisively confront these terrorist enclaves.”

The faction of Afenifere also said decades of ineffective governance had created a vacuum that invited intervention from “capable partners” who understand the urgency of the situation.

“Afenifere wishes to stress that true sovereignty is measured not by rhetoric but by the capacity to protect citizens, enforce the rule of law and secure the nation’s borders. The lives of Nigerians and the preservation of national peace must always take precedence over political sentiment or populist critique. The swift and coordinated military response demonstrates the Nigerian government’s commitment to restoring safety and stability to affected regions.”

Omololu urged citizens, political leaders, and civil society groups to resist any temptation to undermine the operations with “misplaced criticism.”

“Now is the time for solidarity, support and constructive collaboration to eradicate terrorism and protect the lives of Nigerians. The courage, professionalism and decisive action displayed by both Nigerian and United States forces should be applauded. Afenifere reaffirms its support for any measures, domestic or joint, that will ensure that Nigeria’s citizens can live in safety and security, free from the scourge of terror,” he concluded.

The remarks come after US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that American forces had carried out deadly strikes against Islamic State terrorists in North-West Nigeria, warning of more attacks if militants continue killing Christians.

Trump, on his Truth Social platform, said the Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes.

The Nigerian government had also confirmed the air strikes on Friday, while the Nigerian Defence Headquarters described them as one of the most significant known instances of active US military involvement on Nigerian soil in the fight against Islamist-linked terrorists and bandits.
