“Obey Party Constitution” – PDP National Secretary, Anyanwu Blasts Damagum, NWC by aminulive(op): 10:39pm On Oct 01, 2025
POLITICSNIGERIA.COM

A fresh storm has erupted in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as National Secretary, Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu, has issued a scathing rebuke to the party’s National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, accusing him and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of flouting the party’s constitution and acting beyond their powers.

In a strongly worded letter dated October 1, 2025, made available to POLITICS NIGERIA, Senator Anyanwu rejected the controversial dissolution of the Akwa Ibom and Cross River State working committees, describing the decision as “illegal, provocative and grossly unacceptable.” He declared that the purported resolutions reached at the September 30 NWC meeting were null and void.

‘You Have Violated the Constitution’

Anyanwu did not mince words as he reminded Damagum of Section 36 (1) (b) and (e) of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended), which clearly assigns the responsibility of convening meetings of critical party organs—including the National Convention, NEC, National Caucus, and NWC—to the office of the National Secretary.

He accused the National Chairman of bypassing these constitutional provisions, warning that any action taken outside due process cannot stand.

“You should be aware that any action or decisions purportedly reached by an illegally constituted NWC is null and void and of no effect,” Anyanwu stated.

The internal crisis was triggered by a press statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, announcing the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom and Cross River State working committees and their replacement with caretaker committees.

Anyanwu swiftly disowned the move, clarifying that no valid NWC meeting was convened by his office, making any resolutions from such a gathering unconstitutional.

“The decision to undermine the duties of my office as provided by the party constitution is provocative and grossly unacceptable by me,” he said.

‘Retrace Your Steps’ — Anyanwu Warns Damagum

The National Secretary, in a clear message to Damagum and other NWC members, called for strict adherence to the PDP constitution to avoid deepening the leadership crisis.

“It is high time you retraced your steps and conduct yourself and the affairs of our party in strict compliance with the PDP constitution 2017 as amended. A stitch in time saves nine,” he warned. This explosive exchange has laid bare widening cracks within the PDP’s national leadership, coming at a sensitive time as the opposition party works to reposition itself for the 2027 general elections.

Party insiders fear the power struggle between top officials could escalate further if internal procedures are not restored, threatening the party’s unity and electoral strategy.

The Wike script continues to be played. I thought Atiku was the problem? Next mission is to deny Jonathan the ticket. We all know the puppet master pulling the strings in the background. We are witnessing Paul Biya in the making. No one can use sheer force to propel themselves into power against the general wish of Nigerians. No previous Nigerian leader behaved this way, not even Abacha. They scream "it's the turn of the South", but they want no other Southern candidate to contest.

As expected, there is nothing PDP can do to please Wike camp because they are already made up their to work for APC.

The voice of Anyawu; the hand of Wike.

The agent of destabilization planted in their midst. Unless PDP drastically solve the Wike problem, they will perpetually remain in crisis.

Interesting. I always enjoy your legal views on these matters. Do you think Wike/Anyanwu have the cards to scuttle or prevent the PDP convention from taking place without any legal rancour or that ship has sailed?

Every Party is supreme in its own affairs. No Court can stop the PDP Convention unless the NWC or NEC so deem fit. In this case, Makinde is fully involved and has an interest, the Convention will be holding in his state so he has all the cards now.

DeLaRue:
I am not familiar with the constitution of PDP, however, if the constitution states that only the National Secretary can initiate a meeting, it would be illegal for the National Chairman to do otherwise, particularly when the National Secretary is available and in office.

Some of the alleged provisions in the constitution of some of Nigeria's parties are perplexing. Why on earth would a constitution make one official the sole person that can call a meeting. That is poor risk management, and a recipe for logjams. That constitution needs to be amended.

Now they will have parallel state working committees in Akwa Ibom, and Cross Rivers state.

This will go to court, and create new a uncertainty around the party.
Anyanwu is crying wolf, nothing more nothing less.
It's just politics nothing much, two factions trying to outdo each other.

It is the PDP National Chairman who calls or initiates meetings, according to the PDP Constitution (as highlighted). However, it has been discovered that when resolutions are reached during meetings that doesn't go in favour of the National Secretary, he either reports something else or decides not to send the correspondences at all (that is if he decides to attend). The National Chairman now have to issue same himself, because if he uses the Deputy like before, he will be accused of bypassing the National Secretary (another problem).
There is no law in the land that bars the National Chairman from issuing letters or correspondences in our Party Politics system. Infact, notice of the NEC meeting sent to INEC that reinstalled Anyanwu as substantive National Secretary was signed by the National Chairman alone.

What is this present furore about? The Cross River PDP Chair is loyal to Wike, his tenure elapses, instead of an election PDP NWC decides for a caretaker; people obviously not loyal to him.

The Akwa Ibom PDP is loyal to Gov Eno. Wike comes to commission projects, they welcome him and celebrate the Gov who has long defected. PDP NWC rightfully dissolves the exco.

In all of these, the PDP Chair ensures the National Publicity Secretary faces the Press after each NWC meeting and explains resolutions reached. This doesn't clash with the job of the National Secretary. The National Secretary's job is issue correspondences to INEC or other organs of the Party. Now this National Secretary either doesn't attend meetings or issue letters as directed by his Chair so the NWC has left him behind.

Now, issues of leadership is internal affairs, no Court in the land can adjudicate on that. So, he knows that even if he goes to Court, he won't get reprieve that's why he is threatening and shouting, you can see nobody is replying.
So there is no parallel working committee at any level of the PDP as at today.
31 members are in charge of Akwa Ibom PDP for a 3-month caretaker period already.

For Cross River PDP, the Zonal Committee in interim, is in-charge of the exco.
PDP held successful congresses in Kebbi and Kwara, I think.

So, it's just politics.... Anyanwu and Wike will be fine.

That's reassuring. I'm convinced Makinde has the financial war-chest to slug it out with any contender including Jonathan. It remains to be seen if pressure or other political intrigues from Bala Mohammed and others can tip the scale in favour of Jonathan if he decides to contest.

Jonathan wants to contest. For the Presidency to start issuing reminders about him, they've got Intel he intends to run. Jonathan wants a clean ride, just himself v Tinubu. An Obi or Atiku will make it tight for him and cut into his main base.
I understand he stopped Diri from defecting, he doesn't want the PDP.

Makinde has no intentions to beat Tinubu, he wants to win Oyo for PDP. It will be very difficult for him so the best thing is to do a Kwankwaso. It will have been difficult for RMK to win Kano if he hadn't flown the kite for President, that's what GSM wants to do. For Makinde, it's about his successor not to beat Tinubu.

Atiku isn't stepping down for anyone, he has pulled people into the ADC, spent time and finance, he will rather lose at the Primaries than step down for anyone. That has always been his motto.

Peter Obi will not run under the ADC, he will leave..... Party is unknown for now.
Therein lies Jonathan's dilemma.

For Tinubu, he doesn't want any Southerner at alllllll, puts him at a big disadvantage.

You have 18 NWC members

15 agree on something, then you as a Secretary refuse to implement it. Isn't that insubordination?

The Chairman decides to write himself, and you are warning the Chairman, will this happen in your party, the APC?
yarimo:
15 agreed or not. They must obey what the party constitution said in the respect of the office of National secretary isn't that simple
Party constitution says correspondences should be routed through the National Secretary but same Constitution says the National Chairman can delegate functions, so......

Go and ask the United Nations General Assembly, 202 say Israel na rogue nation, 1 country use veto vote to annul everything, yet u are here complaining?

Nonsense hypocrisy.
There is nothing like hypocrisy.
You are comparing grapes to apples.

Voting by the UN Security Council is different from voting by the General Assembly.

Issues like the case of Israel, especially military action, international sanctions and/or peacekeeping operations are principally decided by the Security Council and it must be an affirmative YES from all 5 Permanent members before a go-ahead action takes place. Any of these 5 can veto and decision(s) reached by the UNSC is BINDING.

Votes by the General Assembly are non-binding and is essentially for mounting pressures and not for effect per se.

You see, it's not the same.

Can you please tell us when the drama of Oshiomhole’s Assembly of Past Criminals, APC will end in their season film of extreme poverty shege corruption and insecurity?

How did APC’s promise of change become a one chance change of promise?

Nemere2020:
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Chief Olawale Edun has said the last time Nigeria’s economy looked stable was about a decade ago.

He made this statement during his maiden press conference as Minister of Finance where he outlined President Bola Tinubu’s vision, agenda and strategy for the economy.

He said, “I think as we all know, we are not where we should be. The economy is barely growing above the rate of population growth.

“But it was not always so, and I think in trying to look at the way forward, if we now have a situation of slow growth, double-digit inflation, weak/depreciating exchange rate, as well as security concerns that are resulting in an economy that is not growing and not taking Nigerians out of poverty.

“If we think back to the last time when the economy was stable- when it was growing, when inflation was low, and the interest rate was affordable, that period was about a decade ago. Growth was about 6% in 2013 and 2014.”

May Day: Hunger, unemployment, insecurity real— Tinubu

According to him: “The theme demands our collective attention and serves as a stark reminder of the need to create an environment where every worker feels safe, valued, and empowered to contribute to the growth and prosperity of our nation. As your President, I assure you that this administration is committed to creating such an environment for the common good.”

On the economic hardship, he noted that while it is a global phenomenon, its effects on Nigerians are particularly severe.

Tinubu said: “I am aware of the peculiarities of the economic hardship Nigerians face—rising living costs, hunger, insecurity, unemployment, and the loss of livelihoods. These challenges are real and demand definitive solutions, which I am poised to address as your President.

And guess what, your jagaban and his supporters were also shouting like most of the people you called E-rats were shouting accusing Obasanjo of destroying their party's.
