Nigerian Groom Cancels Wedding After Bride’s Family Demands Extra ₦1.5m For Food by phosky(op): 6:33am On Oct 02, 2025
A Nigerian groom has shocked many after calling off his wedding just weeks before the ceremony, following a heated dispute with his fiancée’s family over an additional ₦1.5 million payment for food. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

According to reports, the groom had already settled the ₦3.5 million bride price and covered other wedding expenses, including event planners and catering services. However, the bride’s family insisted he must pay an extra ₦1.5m, claiming it was part of their “family tradition.”

Groom Tried to Negotiate But Failed

Sources revealed that the groom attempted to negotiate by offering to handle the catering himself, but his proposal was rejected. His disappointment deepened when his fiancée allegedly refused to intervene or support him during the standoff with her family.

In frustration, the groom decided to cancel the wedding entirely, despite still having strong feelings for his would-be bride.
Social Media Reacts

The story gained attention after X (formerly Twitter) user @itzchristunique shared the groom’s ordeal online. The post revealed the man’s frustration, especially over his fiancée’s silence during the disagreement.

“My friend’s brother, whose wedding was supposed to take place in December, just cancelled it. The family of his fiancée demanded he pay ₦1.5m for food to be served that day,” the post read.

It further explained that the groom had already spent millions on bride price and preparations, yet the family remained unyielding in their demand.
Mixed Opinions Online

The development has sparked mixed reactions across social media. While some users supported the groom’s decision, describing the family’s demand as exploitative, others argued that family traditions should be respected if both partners are serious about marriage.

This incident adds to the growing conversations around the rising cost of marriage ceremonies in Nigeria and the pressure it places on young couples.

They have squeezed a hell of resources out of him. And they want to drain him the more to know if he is a real man. A harsh way to tell him that our daughter does not come for free.
They won’t do that If she is in her late 30s.
It’s because there are many men on queue for her that is why she no wan talk if he disappoint. She could have a backup suitor somewhere.

700k bride price for my friend's wife whose bride wasn't even working anything tangible was already making me pissed off. Families of brides shouldn't be extorting men now in the name of marriage. It's giving selling your daughter out.

When my sister wedded, my family came out, na we run the food for the white wedding without any help from groom's side. Her husband and his family respects us fully today because dem no say we no sell our sister.

Bride not even defending her husband to be from her family already tells you how the marriage will be. Good riddance.

That’s what you get when you marry a liability as a wife. See ehn, marriage sweet pass when both of una dey spend together.

The guy was even expecting the lady to say something. 😂

Normally, some ladies for just step in and pay that ₦1.5m through their husband once dem notice say the man don dey uncomfortable with her family demands.

As a man, try marry a woman wey fit bail you out from the shackles of her family.

As a woman too, no completely depend on your husband financially. Have your own source of income, even if e small. You no need match am 1 Naira for 1 Naira. Trust me, men appreciate women more that way.

I’m very certain Oga for no get wahala if the lady just talk say she go support with even ₦500k.

The decision is kinda hasty...having spent somuch already...i'm sure a bit of calculative reasoning would have sufficed.

All he needed do was just to drop N1million and leave them to sort themselves out.

Some families are the worst enemies of their own. If you cross paths with them they will use you as a sounding board for their evil proclivities.

Always avoid them. Like Robert Greene adviced in his book, 10th law of "48 Laws of Power",the law of infection, which states that you should avoid associating with unhappy and unlucky people. Greene argues that emotional states are as infectious as diseases. When you spend time with unhappy people, their negativity can rub off on you.

The bride family seems hungry

The so called family tradition is ancestors putting peer pressure on present people

The groom don do wetin him power rish

Any extra, is not needed

As long as the guy has paid bride price , the marriage is a done deal, all these other things doesn't matter

The need for both couples to present a united front is non negotiable
They most both feel the sense of security that the other person would not leave them like sitting ducks
