Yoruba Leaders Demand Immediate Impeachment of President Tinubu Over Alleged Conflict of Interest



A coalition of prominent Yoruba socio‐political leaders and traditional rulers has formally called for the impeachment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing what they describe as clear breaches of public trust and constitutional impropriety arising from the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway contract award.


The impeachment demand, spearheaded by a faction of Afenifere led by Oba Oladipo Olaitan, centers on these specific accusations:


During the inauguration of Phase 1, Section 1 of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway project, President Tinubu reportedly referred to Gilbert Chagoury, Chairman of the Chagoury Group (contractor for the project), as his “partner in daring.” Oba Olaitan and others assert this publicly admitted partnership suggests self‐dealing, because Chagoury Group also owns Eko Atlantic City, a private real estate development adjacent to the project.


The group claims the contract was awarded without proper competitive bidding and that the president’s remarks strongly imply the project was tailored to favour Chagoury’s company. This, they argue, violates procurement laws and undermines public confidence.


By allegedly favouring a private interest via the coastal highway contract, Yoruba leaders say the administration has breached its constitutional obligation to act for the public good. They argue that admitting a “partnership” with the contractor signals misuse of office for private benefit.


Immediate initiation of impeachment proceedings by the National Assembly. Oba Olaitan has said the legislature must show it is “not complicit” and act swiftly.

A thorough public investigation into all contracts awarded under the Tinubu administration, especially large‐scale infrastructure projects with private real estate implications.

Full disclosure of contracts, procurement documents, bidding processes, and the content of any agreements involving public officials to ensure transparency.



Notably, the Lagos State chapter of the APC has strongly rejected the allegations and the impeachment demand, characterizing them as misinterpretations and politically motivated attacks. They maintain that:

Tinubu’s comment about Chagoury being a “partner in daring” was figurative, not indicating a formal business partnership.

The contract was handled according to due process.

The impeachment demand is being used by political opponents to score points rather than seek genuine accountability.

Legal and Constitutional Considerations

For a president to be impeached under the Nigerian Constitution, lawmakers in the National Assembly must find evidence of “gross misconduct” as defined under the Constitution.

The contested issues—conflict of interest, breach of public trust—could potentially satisfy such criteria if proven. However, the burden of proof lies with the accusers, and due legal process must be followed.



The public trust question raised has serious political implications, particularly because the accused project is not just a road but tied with a private development (Eko Atlantic).

If the National Assembly acts, it would set a precedent for accountability in how major public contracts involving real estate/reclaimed land are handled.

Conversely, failure to respond credibly might deepen political divisions within Yoruba socio‐political groups, and fuel broader demands for oversight and reform in governance and procurement.
