Nigerian Abroad Sparks Outrage Urging Yahoo Boys to Scam ‘Colonizers, Not Africans’

A viral video of a Nigerian living abroad has ignited heated debate online after he openly encouraged internet fraudsters, widely known as “yahoo boys,” to continue their illegal activities. However, he drew a moral distinction, urging them to avoid defrauding fellow Africans and instead target foreigners, whom he referred to as “colonizers.” Eyes Of Lagos reports,

What Was Said in the Viral Clip

In the video, the man spoke passionately about Nigeria’s economic challenges, arguing that survival on a regular salary had become nearly impossible. He said:

“If you dey do yahoo, my brother, my sister, I no discourage you at all. The things wey dey happen in Nigeria dey burst my head. How can a normal average Nigerian survive on a Nigerian salary?”

He went on to say he would never report anyone engaging in fraud, explaining:

If anybody ask me say you dey do this, I no go snitch on anybody because I know how hard it is now in Nigeria.”

However, he pleaded that fraudsters refrain from targeting Africans:

Abeg, please don’t be collecting money from our Africa brothers and sisters. The money wey you suppose collect na from our colonizers.”

Why the Remarks Caused Outrage

The video quickly went viral, sparking criticism for seemingly justifying cybercrime while abroad. Many Nigerians condemned his stance, arguing that economic hardship does not excuse criminal activity.

Social media users reacted strongly:

A_Lacastar: “See deportation smiling at you.”
Kurlinx: “Is this a good thing to say by a Nigerian abroad? Is this free speech? Shey abroad don spoil reach like this for him to openly say thishuh
Owilaa: “So because na oyinbo dem dey scam, e suddenly make sense? Scam na scam abeg.”
Olumax3028: “Bro doesn’t even look like a Nigerian. I’ll call him Brazilian before calling him a Nigerian.”
JAdeliyi: “Nonsense talk jare… nah thief dem be jare. All these issue isn’t excuse.”

The incident has sparked a broader conversation about Nigeria’s economic struggles and the ethical dilemmas surrounding survival tactics, especially in the age of cybercrime.

A thief would always be a thief irrespective of the location. These clowns talk as if the British and French governments were distributing free money to their citizens during colonization. Nonsense excuse to justify criminality.

So if Mr A exploited Mr B, so Mr B can also exploit or steal from Mr C?

Ask oyibo how dey feel about enriching their generation with money from slavery and they would tell you they have no reason to feel bad about it infact they even sing the praise of their ancestors for enslaving others.

The point is, I don't encourage crime but at least repay the favour to those who did you evil, instead of doing it to your own people

Yeah the country is hard but that still doesnt make yahoo yahoo right. It's a crime even if the majority and celebrities are doing it. They should go and learn skills so that they won't do yahoo/fraud.
Legit hardwork is better even if it is not enough to meet one's wants but one would sleep comfortably knowing no one is trying to extradite them to stand trial for crime.

I don't know why lots of folks are normalizing bad things. So, as Naija spoil, does that mean Yahoo is right?
