The defining principle of the Prophet is:

And what is established in Islam is that even if a non muslim slave becomes a muslim, he is not freed until he buys himself out slavery or the muslim community come together to pay for the slave from his master and set him free. On account of this, the earliest muslims toiled so hard to get many (slave) arrivals into the fold out of slavery that cost many of them their entire fortunes. They truly sacrificed a lot (Allah be pleased with them and pleased they are with Allah). On top of that, the Prophet also put some many restrictions about muslims keeping slaves that it doesn't make sense to keep them as slaves for too long thereby becoming arguably the first human to break the yoke on slavery before other nations started championing the idea for full emancipation.
