I came across the school fees for freshly admitted students in UNILORIN. Is this not getting out of hand? I can remember vividly, this sum isn't upto what students pay for their whole study in the university. In addition, Acceptance fees of 40k has to be paid
It was heavily subsidized inefficiency until now. In the next few years, public institutions will be true place of excellence.

Those spending millions on private universities education should now opt for public universities while gifted students from indigent backgrounds should have access to scholarships and students loans

I think you may be lying.

I paid 20,100 between 2006-2010
So, 2012? In the North, maybe.
I don't think he is, all my fees(tuition, Accomodation, faculty levy and other miscellaneous was #19800 as at 2010/2011 session. Things are pretty affordable in a federal university then.

The students' loan by Mr BAT should solve part of the problem. The students well know that they are most unlikely to pay back!!!
Re: Federal Universities Have Turned To Private Universities by Baxilexi(m): 4:47pm On Oct 03, 2025
How some folks celebrate loans over subsidy is beyond insane!

Government withdraws one of the most vital basic benefit of being a Nigerian citizen and burdens students with loans and yet it’s considered an achievement.

Can anyone cite a study that informed the president’s opinion about high cost of tuition fees being the reason for reduced tertiary education? And has any recent study shown an increase in university attendance since the implementation of the student loan?

U forgot that ur naira has totally lost its value, 20k say 10 years ago is equivalent to 200k as at today. So think about it, do u not expect them to make appropriate adjustments to school fees too?
In that case minimum wage must also be further reviewed because the 70k isn't a liveable wage. We can't expect poor people's children to bring out money magically from their anus when the government is busy underpaying people.

2026, they're still talking about increased taxation.

Students have access to loan now

For school fees and pocket money(20k) monthly
You are very funny. What kind of talk is this. You did not say access to grant but access to loan that they have to repay back. Why don't you look for a loan to take since loan is a good thing.
Even getting those loans are very difficult. After graduation you will start paying those loans because it's already in the bureau system. That will prevent them from future loan until it's paid.

Naira never had value in the past but a subsidized value. irrespective of whatever situation, anything above N200k is too much in government higher institutions.
Some of you never wanted Nigeria to grow beyond the easy mediocre level that the past leaders have been sustaining.

If everything around you has gone up (rent, food, transport, internet, dstv, phone etc), do you expect school fees to remain the same?

2003/2004 I paid 6k as fresher in economics department and paid 1050 in my 200l then in 300l the fees for staylites was on reasws to 6300 and 18500 for Freshers which we rooted about but still paid. All in these happened in this same unilorin better by far. What a tragedy for federal university paying that much.
Re: Federal Universities Have Turned To Private Universities by Focusmind: 4:58pm On Oct 03, 2025
Lets be truthful to ourselves - the Nigerian state gave us free education!!!

Most of us paid next to nothing throughout the university years and still travelled abroad with the knowledge acquired from Nigeria to excel even further in our new places abroad. Schooling abroad is not cheap, even for the citizens.

They are still not comparable to private. Meanwhile the other side of student loan is increase in fees. If you know you know. That is the game plan.

This is what ASUU and co have been fighting for.
Education has not seen enough leverage positively because of bad funding.

This is better than incessant strikes.
Reason we have NELFUND.
Don't rant.If you have 2 children, put them in the university using NELFUND.
President Tinubu is a genius. You get a job after, you pay in stipends,if you don't,you don't pay.
It is a win win for parents and students.

Even more. I bought my first tricycle in oct 2015 @ #430k. In March 2020 , I bought another one at #700k.

Now as I write, a tricycle is almost 5m.
