Five Die As Dangote Truck Crashes Into Tricycle In Ogun by Maxymilliano(op): 11:21am On Oct 04, 2025
A Dangote Cement truck has crushed five people to death at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

PUNCH Online learnt on Saturday from the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, that the accident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

The TRACE spokesperson noted that the truck had lost its brakes and rammed into a tricycle conveying the five victims.

He identified the vehicles involved as an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with the number plate GRZ 767 XA.

Akinbiyi said, “A fatal road traffic accident occurred at Alapoka Village, Papalanto–Ilaro Road, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday at 8:25 p.m.

The accident involved an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with the number plate GRZ 767 XA. The tricycle was conveying five people. The five people died on the spot.

According to an eyewitness, the truck lost its brakes and rammed into the tricycle, but unfortunately the driver was not observant that he had collided with the tricycle until its tyre crushed the tricycle and the passengers.”

He noted that upon receipt of the incident, the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional TRACE Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue team to the scene.

He added that residents of the community had attempted to attack the rescue team, but the intervention of sister security agencies brought the situation under control.

“The Acting TRACE Head and the Ilaro Commander led a rescue team to the scene and were almost attacked by angry residents, but the intervention of the Amotekun Corps doused the tension.

“The presumed dead were taken to the morgue by Federal Road Safety Corps officials,” Akinbiyi added.

This is not the first incident involving a Dangote truck in fatal crashes.

Recently, Big Brother Naija reality TV star, Phyna, was at loggerheads with the Dangote group after one of the latter’s trucks crushed Phyna’s sister, an accident which eventually claimed her life.

In a November 2024 multiple-crash incident in Lagos and Ogun, a Dangote truck experienced brake failure, causing loss of control. Four people died and seven were injured.

Similarly, in June 2021, a Dangote truck in Ogun State crushed a commercial motorbike rider and passenger, prompting a mob to set the truck ablaze.

Dango trucks have been killing people long time. How long do we continue to die in the hand of Dangote trucks? It is high time they find solutions to all the avoidable death caused by Dangote trucks

The Dept. in Dangote that's responsible for logistics and transportation needs thorough restructuring and a very good training for their drivers, immature, impatience and emotional drivers need to get rid of.

Lots and lots of refinement needs to be done there.

This is getting out of hands.

It's high time, Dangote considers creating his own train route.

That way we could avoid road accidents

When those in power become truly intentional about caring about the people at all, it takes just one hearing for a law to be passed, banning these trucks from plying the roads during the day.

But heck no, it will affect logistics for the elites who get their hands watered to ignore the real things that should be addressed.

May the souls of the dead, rest in peace.

Honestly speaking, something ought to be done concerning this. I respect Dan gote as a businessman but then, his truck drivers can't continue ending lives of promising Nigerians.

Alhaji Aliko Dangote / Dangote Group Leadership

Subject: Immediate action required to stop Dangote trucks killing Nigerians

Alhaji Dangote, we respect what you’ve built, but profit does not absolve responsibility. Your freight operations are causing deaths and terror on our roads. We are aware you move in the sky with your private jet. But those of us still moving on the roads ,dont want to die. We want an amicable, practical fix, not excuses.

What we ask (concrete, non-negotiable):
1. Publicly acknowledge there is a problem. Silence = indifference.
2. Fund and stand up a professional Truck Driving & Safety Academy under Dangote auspices:
• Mandatory for every Dangote driver.
• Curriculum: defensive driving, hours-of-service rules, vehicle inspection, emergency response, fatigue management.
• Certified instructor cadre, written + practical tests equivalent to a US CDL standard.
• Target cost: ≤ 200 million naira to set up and scale nationwide, a fraction of your group capex and corporate revenues.
3. Require all Dangote trucks to be fitted with basic active safety tech within 12 months: speed governors, telematics (real-time location + driver hours), automatic emergency braking where practicable.

4. Institute a transparent driver-discipline & whistleblower policy and publish quarterly safety metrics (accidents, fatalities, driver hours, penalty actions).
5. Commit to insurance/compensation protocol for victims’ families and a community fund for road-safety education.

Why this is reasonable:
• This is achievable, affordable, and directly reduces deaths.
• It protects Dangote’s brand and business continuity — public outrage and litigation are costlier long-term.
• It gives the company moral leadership: wealth used to safeguard lives.

A timeline we can work with:
• Day 0: Public acknowledgment + appointment of a Safety Oversight Officer.
• 60 days: Publish project plan and budget for the Academy and tech rollout.
• 6 months: Academy pilot and telematics rollout on a prioritized fleet.
• 12 months: Mandatory certification for all active drivers; public safety dashboard launched.

We are willing to cooperate on implementation details, community outreach, and oversight. But we will not stop pressing until tangible steps are taken and progress is visible.

This is not a demand for charity, it’s a request for corporate accountability. If you value Nigerian lives as you value your business, act now.

Sincerely,
Malali

As long as no strong action was taken when it happened before , it will continue to happen

I can't blame Dangote and his drivers, I blame the respective state governments and Federal Government that has failed to prioritize Nigerian lives.

If Dangote was slammed with lawsuits running into hundreds of millions of Naira each time his truck kills people, this will stop happening.

I don't hear about BUA trucks or other companies killing people like this

As far as it's under Dangote's umbrella, Aliko Dangote is culpable.

It's just like saying that national grid collapse is acceptable because Tinubu is not a nepa official.

First of all may their souls rest in peace, those who died in this incident were failed by our system, Dangote group as a company refused to employ experienced and well cultured drivers who handle their trucks, on the other hand Federal road safety and other agency responsible for enforcing traffic rules failed this country… those truck drivers are steadily on tramadol weed and other illicit drugs that makes them to slow on wheel. Enforce laws that banned them from drinking or taking pills while driving all this nonsense killings will stop
