The future is looking scary. We are producing a generation of people that are confident in their ignorance.

Its like they don't have any standards or reference for what makes sense and what does not.

I had the opportunity to sit on an interview panel recently, and all I can say is—many of you are simply not ready for the job market.

Let me break this down:

You couldn’t answer basic interview questions, yet when asked if you had any questions, you’re asking, “Is there any other role apart from the one advertised?” Are you here for a job or shopping around?

During the interview, you were literally pressing your phone while being asked a question. I had to call your attention before you awkwardly tucked it between your legs. Really?

You say you currently earn ₦750k, yet you’re interviewing for a role that pays ₦300k. Make that make sense. Why are you here?

You casually told the panel that your current job is your “Plan A,” and this one is “Plan B.” Since it’s a hybrid role, you’d use your free time to run your personal business. So, you’re applying for a backup plan?

You claimed to be a CFO in your previous job, but you couldn’t explain the most basic accounting principles. How does that add up?

Again, you couldn't answer key questions, but you're confidently asking if there are other positions available? Focus on the one you're failing at first.

Your sister called during the interview, asking to speak to the panel because you’re running late for a church program? Is this a job interview or a family meeting?

You said your Excel skill is 8/10, but when given a simple task, you were frozen—just staring at the screen saying, “I’ve forgotten it.” 🤦🏽‍♂️

Please, if you’re going to attend interviews, come correct.
Dress well, prepare well, act like you want the job, and most importantly—respect the process.
Seems like your company is either small or just likes stress. In this day and age, it's now so much easier to weed out such folks. Some companies conduct all interviews and don't meet the candidate in person until final stage.

What I've always found curious is why nigeriam companies hardly declare the salary offer with the job posting.

Is it that they're not proud of their offer?
You have to understand that Nigeria is a 3rd world country and as such, we are NOT ALLOWED to do the samn things that 1st world / Western countries do. If not, the world economy will break down and the earth will explode.

How do you arrive at that conclusion? Is it just by the few observations she made here?

If at all any of it is true. The one where the person earns more, is there something against taking a job that pays less for reasons that may not be disclosed to the interviewer? If it's not content then the interviewer sounds green.
The story is not true obviously. But lets say hypothetically the person claims to be a CFO. Wont you check their LinkedIn? Their professional qualifications? Preliminary call on phone or zoom? Company histories etc

I truly appreciate your candid feedback. it's clear you're passionate about improving recruitment processes, and honestly, that's refreshing.

You're right: the hiring landscape has evolved significantly, and with the rise of remote tools and automation, there's less room for friction and more opportunity to create a smoother, more candidate-centric experience. We’re definitely not above stress (or learning), but we’re committed to continuously improving how we connect with great talent.

If you’ve got ideas or even scars from less-than-ideal hiring journeys, I’d love to hear them. It’s conversations like this that often lead to the best changes.

And hey, if you’re serious about helping us revamp things, let's talk 😉

I don't know if this is related to the topic, but I just want to share it.

I recently had an interview with a US company that has a juicy pay package. The interview was between an HR AI system and myself. You will just be conversing with your computer and your video interview will be recorded. I didn't see that coming. The AI was throwing questions at me and I was answering them. Afterwards, it told me to ask it a tough question in my field. I did and it answered it correctly.

In my view, with the way things are going in today's world, we need to start telling people we know not to bother studying HRM at the university anymore because they don't have a job anymore 🫣. That company I interviewed with was an AI development company. The moment they fully commercialize that AI tool, many HR people will be jobless as AI will start doing their job.
The only HR people that would be jobless are those that dont know how to use the AI tool. That tool used for your interview is for mid to lower level hires. Do you think a Fortune 500 company with billions of dollars in asserts will trust an AI tool that is subject to glitches, error prone and susceptible to hacking will be trusted to hire members of its C-suite? Dont evn hold your breathe..... grin

No, that technology will wreck HR departments of many companies. In places where they have 10 HR people in one department, they can leave 2 to make the final decisions on new hires. Remember, HR and accounting people are some of the highest paid people in companies. So, big companies will be fast to acquire the software to cut cost. The only difference between humans and AI is that the machines lack physical emotions.

If you are into HR, diversify your skills. Try business analysis to prepare for your future. That space pays well too. AI will take over several jobs - content creators and HR people will likely be its first causalities.

You got 1k and you are still complaining. You expected all of them to contribute osusu for your TF back home?

Maybe you imagined smelling the embarrassment in the air because people "work/walk" with budgets on how they intend to spend.

And if they had what makes you think they owe you the responsibility to give you?

This is a weak line of reasoning and orientation bro plus entitlements!
Even, if you don't need a job, don't go begging. And what would 1k do for you? That's a direct insult, so never beg anywhere if you can afford not to beg.

Someone is arguing that I am lying. Some Nigerians aren't even in the 21st Century with us.

That AI system wanted to finish me in a field I thought I was an authority in. And the funny thing is that it doesn't care. If you want to think before answering a question, it will tell you - can we proceed to the next question, please? I have never experienced a thing like that before.

I have interviewed with some of the best multinational companies and finest organisations in Nigeria, and I can boldly say that... Most of what you wrote there can't happen in a proper interview situation.

Maybe you were recruiting for your local church, that's if this whole bedtime story really happened.
I don't believe either. Too many red flags. No one will dare bring out their phone in a serious interview. It doesn't matter if the role is paying 50k or 5m. Also, the sister and church bit.

Really?

You casually told the panel that your current job is your “Plan A,” and this one is “Plan B.” Since it’s a hybrid role, you’d use your free time to run your personal business. So, you’re applying for a backup plan?

You claimed to be a CFO in your previous job, but you couldn’t explain the most basic accounting principles. How does that add up?

Again, you couldn't answer key questions, but you're confidently asking if there are other positions available? Focus on the one you're failing at first.

was it AI that shortlisted the interview candidates or humans were involved. There are things you can detect from a resume and background check

I was privileged to view an AI HR software beta version. The AI software helps you to prepare for the real interview. It wil research the company and the role you applied for plus what you wrote in your CV & interview you accordingly.
The questions the Ai tool was asking were intelligent scenario questions, but my reason for replying you is that HRM students or graduates will not be redundant if AI is part of their curriculum and you can never rule out human involvement in the building of an AI tool, hence, HRMs will be be needed but only fewer than currently required, so they need to up their game by specializing in unique areas of HR with good knowledge of AI
