“Over 10,000 Called To Bar In 3 Months” — NBA President Osigwe Slams Universities For Breaching Admission Quotas, Warns Law School Overwhelmed

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, SAN, has expressed concern over what he described as a growing crisis in the nation’s legal education system, blaming it on the disregard of admission quotas by several universities.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday, Osigwe noted that many law faculties were admitting students far above the limits set by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council of Legal Education. This, he said, had created an overflow of graduates seeking admission into the Nigerian Law School, a development that has overwhelmed the institution’s facilities and staff.

“Too many universities are running law programmes without regard for the quota system. The result is an endless backlog of graduates, and the Law School is under pressure to accommodate them,” he said.

Osigwe warned that the yearly surge in Law School admissions had led to a sharp rise in the number of lawyers being called to the Bar, stretching the system to its breaking point. He, however, cautioned against outright denial of access to graduates, urging reforms that would strike a balance between university intakes and the Law School’s limited capacity.

On the controversy surrounding invitation cards for Call to Bar ceremonies, the NBA president explained that the restriction to a single guest per graduate was necessary. According to him, the Body of Benchers had to consider space, safety, and crowd management, given the large number of candidates now admitted.

At the July Call to Bar exercise, 5,728 graduates were admitted in three days, while another 4,429 joined the roll of barristers between September 23 and 25. Osigwe stressed that allowing two guests per graduate, as was the case in earlier years, would overwhelm available facilities.

He acknowledged the inconvenience faced by families who would prefer to attend in larger numbers but maintained that the measure was unavoidable. “The hall has a limited capacity, and safety must remain a priority,” he said.

The Call to Bar ceremony is a statutory event conducted by the Body of Benchers to formally admit graduates of the Nigerian Law School as legal practitioners.

Hypocrisy at the bar will not save them. They are beneficiaries of the "mass market " their profession has turned into.

Law is like what Banking and Finance was back in the days. Today, every private university has a law program. So cheap and easy yet the professional is not one that immediately turns you into an employer of labour.

Its very simple; only admit into the Law school the number you gave as quota to the schools. They will learn when you do that on a steady.

As a lawyer myself, I think the NBA President just aired his personal opinion on this matter, an opinion which I do not agree with..

Unless he can prove he was never surplus to requirement at any point in his life, I believe he should live and let live

As NBA President, he has direct access to the CLE, BOB, University VCs, and all Law Faculty Deans...So I am at a loss as to what he is slamming in public when he can conveniently walk into their offices and express his displeasure at the situation..

As long as these people were able to pass the rigors of their various University Faculties of Law and also pass the more than rigorous Bar Final exams, I believe they have earned their place as our learned colleagues

When these new wigs pay their practicing fees to the NBA account l, I am sure he won't reject such funds because they are surplus and undesired members...More lawyers means more money for the NBA yes? grin..and I am sure he will never complain about too much money entering the NBA Aza. grin

It is up to you to develop a framework for regulating admission into law faculties all over the countries.

I agree it doesn't pay in Nigeria elsewhere it does. This is why all of them have besieged the political space for relevance.

Why is the NBA so bothered? Are they concerned about quality or they are scared there may be too many lawyers thereby less opportunities for the existing lawyers?
Re: Nigerian Bar Association Slams Universities For Admitting Too Many Law Students by pacino26(m): 5:59pm On Oct 04, 2025
Admission quota in respect National demographics or some BS in his head!. We are having population boom in this country of ours and all this chairman can think about is the exclusivity of the law profession! They should go and take up cases left abandoned in many correctional centres across the nation. They can as well encourage more of them to join the ministry of interior as police officers and all that. We need just about every aspect of human endeavors for this country to move forward.

It's not about the NBA president, council had this issue with universities for some time, some school admit 3 times more than their allocation which is bad.

And the admitted students passed yes?

Even if they cheated in their universities, it is practically impossible to cheat at NLS...I attended NLS Agbani in 2014/2015 and I know I toiled like a mad person to pass the Bar Finals...I have never experienced such intellectual strain before or after that NLS...

So for the fact that they at least beat the Bar finals, the NBA President shouldn't be a soggy blanket and dampen these people's enthusiasm at being lawyers by making them feel unwanted.

He, CLE and BOB know what to do to nip overpopulation of the Bar, if they really want to...He doesn't need to publicly call anyone out..

Good of a thing that a lot of them won't be practicing.
Some are just fulfilling their parents wish for them to goto university.
Some are just there for the paper cos they're already in a thriving business/career.
Some are there just to add extra credential to their career like policemen or criminologists.
Some are also there for ego sake.

And finally, a lot of them won't be practicing.

Some would be legal advisers to companies or their family business.

Some would be real estate agents.

Some would also be entertainers like Falz and Layi Wasabi.

So nothing spoil.

They want to keep lawyers expensive so only the rich can afford one.

What's so special about being a lawyer that you need small quota for?

Greedy people.

Too much law students/graduates for a lawless country like Nigeria

What an irony
Re: Nigerian Bar Association Slams Universities For Admitting Too Many Law Students by mariovito(m): 6:25pm On Oct 04, 2025
Most faculties of law in universities are guilty of this.

Most especially, private universities

By the time they get to 200L, they prune them down via any criteria.

And still, time for law school, they still have excess candidates more than their quota.
Re: Nigerian Bar Association Slams Universities For Admitting Too Many Law Students by wellmax(m): 6:27pm On Oct 04, 2025
Instead of increasing capacity of Law School or pushing for new ones, NBA wants to deny students admission. Just imagine the mentality.
