Households Suffer As Cooking Gas Shortage Worsens, Rises To ₦25,000 by iwaeda(op): 7:01am On Oct 06, 2025
The price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, LPG, also known as cooking gas, has increased to N25,000 this week from N17,500 the previous week.

Checks by Vanguard confirmed that the price of 1kg currently retails at between N1, 500 and N2, 000, depending on the location.

Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, NALPGAM, Mr. Bassey Essien, told Vanguard on phone yesterday that the distribution of the product was disrupted by the recent industrial action by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN.

He said: “Dangote Petroleum Refinery is currently the highest local supplier of cooking gas in Nigeria. The crisis involving PENGASSAN scuttled distribution. Many dealers could not replenish their stocks during the period.

‘’What we are witnessing is a function of demand and supply. In practice, the demand for cooking gas is higher than supply. But supply would likely stabilise in the coming days, following resolution of the conflict.”

Checks by Vanguard also showed that many gas plants without the product were shut down yesterday in Lagos and its environs, making consumers to move from one place to another in search of gas.

Recently, Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, disclosed that the refinery was currently producing 2,000 tonnes of LPG per day, adding that it planned to increase output further in order to meet the nation’s demand.

Dangote, who expressed concerns about Nigeria’s energy poverty, said: “If the distributors are not trying to bring it down, we’ll go directly and sell to consumers so that people will now transit from firewood or kerosene to LPG for cooking.”

Before the intervention of the refinery, the nation’s LPG demand was largely met by the NLNG Limited.
In a report obtained yesterday, the NLNG limited, stated: “At NLNG, we are committed to making clean, reliable energy accessible to every Nigerian home. Since 2007, under our Domestic LPG, DLPG, scheme, we have been supplying Butane – commonly known as cooking gas – to homes across Nigeria.

“Over the years, we have steadily increased the volume reserved for the domestic market. In 2022, we took a bold step and committed 100% of our Butane production to Nigeria’s domestic needs. Thanks to this commitment, all of our Butane output is now fully absorbed locally.

“To get cooking gas to Nigerian homes efficiently, NLNG supplies Butane to selected partners (our Off-takers) through approved coastal LPG terminals.

“These terminals are currently located in Lagos and Rivers States, with more facilities in Delta State under review – and plans underway to expand to even more locations. By reaching different regions, we are bringing cooking gas closer to consumers.

‘’We have also chartered a dedicated vessel to ensure regular, reliable delivery of Butane to these terminals, making cooking gas more available, accessible, affordable, and acceptable across the country.”

If you see people praising Tinubu government, is either on tribal issue or being connected with someone in govt. Another set of praise singers are keyboard warriors employed to dish out fake news to support the government of the day. We all want Nigeria govt to succeed for the benefits of all citizen. The more we pray, the more they betray us

This Nupeng or Pengasan should be completely ban because of their disruptive and politically motivated actions that ultimately hurt the ordinary citizens, they should apply for license and build their refineries and unionize them and leave Dangote alone, they are nothing but opportunists who exploit workers and employers just fleece both and line their pockets

How can a union that claims it's fighting for the rights of workers bring untold hardship on the general public, including the workers they claim to be fighting for? You know how important the supply of Dangote is to the nation, yet you chose to blackmail him and the nation just to have your way? So because of 800 workers, 150 million Nigerians Should suffer? I'm sure Festus Osifo won't feel the pains of this cooking gas saga since he earns big as both and oil worker, pengassan chairman and TUC chairman.

The problem is, let's bring in an army government that would reduce gas prices.

The problem is , the cost of producing that gas remains the same, so the army government would have to pay subsides to keep the gas prices low

Where would the money from subsides come from? The education, healthcare and other segments of the budget.

And at a certain point they won't be able to afford the subsidy, so prices rise again

Plus the people that bring you the gas are Nigerians who want to be paid decent salaries in this tinubulation economy. Unless you want to pay gas workers salaries as low as 10000 naira monthly.
