CAN dismisses Christian genocide claims, says terrorist attacks patternless

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dismissed claims of an ongoing Christian genocide in Nigeria as peddled by foreign agents.

Recently, US comedian and HBO host Bill Maher made an allegation about Christian genocide in Nigeria, blaming it on Islamists in the country.

“I’m not a Christian, but they are systematically killing the Christians in Nigeria. They’ve killed over a hundred thousand since 2009. They’ve burnt 18,000 churches. These are the Islamists, Boko Haram. This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza.

They are literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country,” Maher said.

Also, US Senator Ted Cruz accused Nigerian government officials of “ignoring and even facilitating the mass murder of Christians by Islamist jihadists.”

He also lamented that Nigerian Christians are being targeted and executed for their faith by Islamist terrorist groups, adding that they “are being forced to submit to sharia law and blasphemy laws across Nigeria. It is long past time to impose real costs on the Nigerian officials who facilitate these activities…”

Calling for those responsible to be held accountable, the Texas Senator said he has introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act to the US Senate, which would target these officials with powerful sanctions and other tools.

Additionally, Riley Moore, the member representing West Virginia’s 2nd District in the United States Congress, wrote a letter to the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, urging him to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).

He also urged Rubio to halt arms sales and all associated technical support until the Nigerian government demonstrates it is sufficiently committed to ending this reign of persecution and slaughter against Christians.

Meanwhile, the Presidency, in multiple statements, has dismissed the claims of a Christian genocide in Nigeria as lies, stressing that there is no religious war going on in the country.

Bullets don’t look for a Christian or spare a Muslim
When our correspondent reached out to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the organisation’s Director of National Issues and Social Welfare, Abimbola Ayuba,

admitted that killings were going on in the country. He, however, dismissed the claims that there were attacks against Christians alone.

Ayuba said, “All I will say to you is that empirical facts exist all over the space about the spate of killings in Nigeria. The pattern of killings has truly not been in a particular pattern. In some Christian-dominated states like Benue, it will appear as if Christians are being killed.

But this same insurgency has claimed several Muslims in their early morning prayers; they attack them in their mosques, slaughter them, kidnap people and do a lot of things.

“Sometimes, our situation is being taken advantage of by groups who know what they benefit from foreign interests.

Those foreign interests have a right to poke their noses into what’s going on in our system, but we also have a right to report things as they are.

“Yes, it’s concerning that this insurgency is lasting too long. Also, the spate of killings does not take any pattern. If they open fire in a marketplace, the bullets don’t look for a Christian or spare a Muslim or even spare a baby.

So, all we must be doing now is adopt an all-of-society action to stop this insurgency and also address issues of groupthink. Why run to America when you have a Senate here where you can file your petition? In the end, when they place Nigeria as a country of particular interest, all of us will suffer. But those who run abroad to look for sympathy know why they do that.”

CAN must not miss this opportunity to help Nigerians. Nigeria government are not serious about the fighting against terrorism.

You cannot continue to enlist Boko Haram fighters in Nigeria Army and you expect us to win fight against terrorism.

The CAN should also demand for weapons, if Fulani herdsmen can be going around with AK47 then every Christians in Benue, Southern Kaduna and Plateau should have weapons too.

But I thought "they" said Nigeria is safe and secured?

As you know the real CAN left in 2023.

This is the Agbado faction speaking, according to them the people killed were not christians.

Let's accept their statement go to church this Sunday and make a mockery of ourselves bas christians we claim to be.

Tinubu is worried about US interest in the Nigerian killings because he knows it’s a means to nail his govt.

He is speaking through many avenues from his aides to Reno and now CAN. But it’s unfortunate his rigging plans for 2027 might not succeed eventually.

Useless talk. It's obvious that far more moslems were killed by terrorists across the country than christians. Look at the numbers of displaced persons. How many are christians? There are several terrorist organizations in the North compared with only one IPOB/UGM and their online bandit arm called obedients in the South of Nigeria

Who is telling us to deny what our eyes is seeing what what our ears is hearing. Nigerian Christian Genocide is real
Re: CAN Dismisses Christian Genocide Claims, Says Terrorist Attacks Patternless by Razzness(m):
We all know the particular group of people who are trying to push this agenda. They've never resonated with the idea of one Nigeria so they seize every opportunity to play victims. They want to use it to gain foreign interest and push for their main agenda for an independent Republic (which am not against by the way).

Yes. There is serious insecurity problem in Nigeria. IPOB members in Owerri, Onistsha have killed an astronomical amount of hausa people in those areas (I personally know 2 victims). Bandits have ransacked entire villages in Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and killed scores of Muslims. At the peak of Boko haram 95% of those that lost their lifes and homes were Muslims indigenous to Borno. In Kano bomb exploded in mosques, market places, and motor parks. Yet you are here pushing the agenda of Christian genocide. If you see genocide you no go Know? I know many Christians have died but so too have Muslims. We have a toothless Military and police systems that have turn to political parties. That is where the real problem is..

Anyway this idea of Christian genocide will not even see the light of day because international journalist are welcome to Nigeria to come and conduct investigation, the United nations is welcome, all the US senators are all welcome to come and see for themselves.

Same sentiment was entertained by Muslims when Jonathan was the President.

Especially when the CAN President's jet was caught in South Africa, involved in the smuggling of weapons for Jonathan's government.

They just recently start attacking Muslims that are not in support of their genocidal campaign

CAN is not different from NURTW and other unions dragging Nigeria backward

Re: CAN Dismisses Christian Genocide Claims, Says Terrorist Attacks Patternless by erad(m): 6:34pm On Oct 07, 2025
CAN is no longer a serious organization because they choose not to align with the obvious falsehood being spread around. Nigerians are funny.

Like I said. Insecurity in Nigeria is at an all time high but it is not a Christian genocide. Both Muslims and Christians are collecting.

Unfortunately, we have a dull population that does not care about facts as long as it doesn't align with their agenda. They keep listing figures, but ask for specifics and everyone goes dumb. The west isn't spreading the propaganda because they care, they want to come and 'save' you like they saved Libya and others. It's up to you to allow them or not.
