Abia State Assembly To Embark Peaceful March To Abuja Demanding Kanu's Release by gidgiddy(op): 9:41pm On Oct 07, 2025
The Abia State House of Assembly has announced plans to embark on a peaceful march to Abuja to demand the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved on Tuesday by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Austin Mmeregini, during plenary.

The Assembly also aligned with Governor Alex Otti, other South-East governors, and prominent stakeholders across the region in urging the Federal Government to grant Kanu release on medical grounds.

Recall that Otti had, during a recent project commissioning in Abia, responded to an appeal by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for Kanu’s release, assuring that he and his counterparts in the South-East were making concerted efforts to secure the IPOB leader’s freedom.

Mmeregini, who represents Umuahia East Constituency, expressed concern over Kanu’s deteriorating health condition and appealed to the House to support the governor’s ongoing efforts. He also urged members of the National Assembly from the South-East and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership to intensify advocacy for Kanu’s medical care and unconditional release.

In his contribution, the member representing Ikwuano State Constituency, Mr Isiehi Boniface, proposed that the Abia Assembly should visit the National Assembly to meet with the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives over the matter, after which a press conference would be held.

Also speaking, Kalu Nwoke, representing Ohafia South, lamented that the continued detention of Kanu had worsened insecurity in parts of Ohafia, despite Otti’s efforts to restore peace.

In.his remarks, the Speaker of the House, Emmanuel Emeruwa, criticised the Federal Government’s continued detention of Kanu despite a valid court order granting him release.

He said, “Going by the law, Nigeria appears to be operating two systems of justice. Having been granted bail by the court, the government should obey that order.

“Most of us agree that the continuous detention of Nnamdi Kanu is out of the ordinary and against the rule of law, unless there is something the public does not know. We can only urge the President to show mercy and grant his release.

“It would be of no use for Nnamdi Kanu to die in detention. He has not been convicted, and his offence is not unbailable. Every citizen deserves their fundamental human rights, and the government must respect that.”

The Speaker reaffirmed the Assembly’s support for Otti’s ongoing efforts and called on South-East lawmakers, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and other relevant stakeholders to sustain pressure on the Federal Government to ensure Kanu receives proper medical attention and is eventually released.

Meanwhile, the House also expressed concern over the reported destruction of properties belonging to Igbo indigenes in Lagos State.

Raising the issue under matters of urgent public importance, the member representing Bende North Constituency, Nnamdi Ibekwe, urged the House to call on the President and the National Assembly to intervene immediately to restore order and prevent further attacks on Igbo properties under any guise.

And yet none of your Senators and legislators have ever been serious about Nigeria since 1960, which is one of the reasons Nigeria is the mess it is

And the ones that you think are ready were busy draining Igbos financially and killing Igbos by pretending to be promising Igbos Biafra that never even get close in next 1000years. We thank Tinubu for breaking the backbones of IPOB/ESN. Marching to Abuja on citizen taxes budget for mere excursion for political noise to boost ego amounts to waste of state and people resources on frivolous matter. Your protest can never free Kanu from DSS until court judgement, so why wasting money of avons travelling to Abuja what can be done in Abia and let the media carry it.

Is it not just a cover up for what Otti said that they are doing something just for mere talks, so to let people know something is done, state has to waste citizen taxes for mere excursion to watch one sturbbon man in the zoo in the DSS zoological garden, and the DSS turns them back to proceed on more tour of Abuja to see wonder Wike is doing, then come back home without Kanu. What a misplaced priority!

Well considering that your APC government has released five thousand Boko haram fighters this year, offers peace deal to bandits, and negotiates with terrorists, all the above is pointless

When it comes to politics, the southeast truly is a kindergarten.

What about using their position of influence in the government to lobby or pressure the government for his release if this is not an eye service?

One of them even said that Kanu's offence is bailable.

That was when I realised the kind of jokers that constitute the Abia state house of assembly. Apparently the are just voicing emptiness and probably intend to proceed on an excursion to Abuja in order to exhaust their budget before the end of the year. cry cry

Very ridiculous!
So,when Buhari- who brought your Kanu back to Nigeria from Kenya was alive,
you were afraid to do the marching to Abuja,
but you now think that Tinubu should be tried,if he caved in,is good and since you are LP and Obident, you can do anything, right?
Nigerians are watching and waiting!
It's better for you to remain in your State and avoid serious consequences of illegality.
Wisdom should prevail.

Well, since your government arranges transport for released Boko haram fighters so that they dont have to walk home, it shouldn't be a problem for them to arrange the same for elected State Assembly members.
