May Agbamuche-Mbu has been appointed as the Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the official handover by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, News360 Nigeria reports.

Agbamuche-Mbu, the commission’s longest-serving National Commissioner, assumed leadership on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Professor Yakubu urged the commissioners and directors to give their full support to Agbamuche-Mbu as she oversees the commission’s activities pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.

Here are seven key facts about the new Acting INEC Chairman:

1. Agbamuche-Mbu was born in Kano State but originally hails from Delta State, Nigeria, embodying both northern and southern Nigerian cultural influences.

2. Agbamuche-Mbu earned her LLB from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1984, and later qualified as a Solicitor in England and Wales.

3. She also holds an LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law, as well as postgraduate degrees in International Dispute Resolution and International Business Law.

4. She previously managed the Lagos-based law firm Norfolk Partners and served on the Presidential Projects Assessment Committee (2010–2011) and the Ministerial Committee for the Solid Minerals Sector Roadmap (2016).

She is a seasoned legal practitioner with over 30 years of experience in law, dispute resolution, and public service.

5. Between 2014 and 2016, she served as editor of ‘THISDAY LAWYER’, publishing 120 editions of her popular “LEGAL EAGLE” column.


6. Agbamuche-Mbu is a certified arbitrator and has served as Secretary of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Nigeria branch).

7. May Agbamuche-Mbu was named Acting Chairman of INEC on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, following the handover by Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

The way you people cofidently display ignorance beats me hollow all the time......a seating president cannot appoint any one from his sub region to be inec chair,in this case the SW......he can only appoint from his zone which in this case is the south, that's leaves the position open to either the SE or SS and this woman has already met 50% of the criteria..... The way you people are so ignorant if how systems run as in the case the electoral system,this then taints your political choices and interests are based on nothing but ignorance......that's why you keep loosing at every election.
