A couple of years ago, roads were constructed with about 10 million naira per kilometer.

The amount presently being used in constructing road per kilometer has so skyrocketed that it is very difficult for anyone that knows to mention it and you won't even hear it from me too even as I am an Engineer.

The inflation currently in the country has cut across so many things and it will be very difficult to construct roads with this present amount as it is just too expensive to say the list.
We are in a dire situation.

When we warned about Tinubu devaluing the Naira , this is what we mean ,his policies have devalued the Naira so much state govts might not be able to construct more than 12kms at a go

Exactly, Nigerians should not expect massive road construction as it used to be before.
The currency devaluation has crippled all sectors.
Presently ,just expect patching of roads here and there.

I work with FERMA and the amount being used to repair roads alone is alarming not to talk of constructing Virgin roads

What do we need to construct roads?

Must we do it the western ways?

Can we not innovate and find our own solutions?

We aren't ready!

I believe that Nigerian government can fund road constructions if they want. However, road constructions are seen as avenue for looting and so the only innovation there would be how to chop more

Are you sure roads were built for under $30k per km just couple years ago? Do you even know what 1 km means? Show one example, or stop pretending you know what you’re talking about

People be asking what played out on Arise TV.
Umahi was triggered by Oseni's unprofessional media practice. But as a public servant he ought to have handled it better. Umahi could have simply told him the cost per 1kilometre road, and explained the technicalities behind the overestimated budget.
What does Oseni mean by "reporting me to Mr President?"
Who does he think he is?
Rufai Oseni feels journalism is about having a loud opinion on subject matters that defy his pedigree. There was a day this guy was arguing an economics subject with an established scholar in the name of journalism, even me that was watching felt triggered.
Finally, whether Umahi is right or wrong about his claim of professor in practice, it sha depends on who is judging.
Umahi is a seasoned engineer. where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1987. His early career spanned various engineering roles, including stints with major firms like Saipem and SCC Nigeria Limited. Before his governorship, Umahi held several leadership roles in the private sector, including co-founding Norman Engineering & Construction Nigeria Ltd and leading Brass Engineering & Construction Nigeria Ltd. He is well-known for his tenure as the Governor of Ebonyi State, serving from 2015 to 2023. Managing a small state and delivering. He is the current Minister of Works.
If you are the one, will let someone who has no knowledge no pedigree in your field talk to you in the manner Oseni did in the name of journalism?

Can you mention the roads that were constructed at $60K between 2011 and now? That’s the pre-devaluation era — if you can’t, then I’ve earned the right to call you and the OP the names you both deserve

Very cheap for the government
That means it’ll only take 500billion to construct road from west all the way down to south east Nigeria

Way cheaper, e no even reach the amount they use for item 7 services or aso rock maintenance

Now the question is why coastal road construction taking 15trillion naira budget if they’re not thieves
Re: If You Know The Cost Of A Kilometre Of Road Construction, Your Head Will Burst by Image123(m): 11:32am On Oct 08, 2025
The cost per kilometer of a 750km project cannot be determined. It can only be estimated or averaged. And conditions may change. This is not building a kiosk or chicken hutch. The terrain and soils are different. Some will need more work or fillings, some different contractors, some will be bridge. Cost of materials and labour from place to place, weather, some diversions, some unexpected challenges, all differ.
We should focus on intelligence, professionalism and patriotism instead of theatrics and media trials.

We have limestone, we have iron ore, government should kickstart steel processing plant by investing in it, and allow private managers to manager it, government can invest in these key sectors, steel production with our iron ore and processing of limestone for cement, we have quarries for stones and granite, we have tar...it shouldn't be too expensive for a nation like Nigeria with an intelligent political class.
Re: If You Know The Cost Of A Kilometre Of Road Construction, Your Head Will Burst by 004gist: 11:37am On Oct 08, 2025
Its catastrophic to devalue Naira when that was our only hedge against rising cost on import.

We import almost everything so devaluation of naira means more Nigeria will spend more for less. They wilm give more naira for for less.

Had it been we are producing then it will be the other way round.

See all European nations all hold their currency tight.

But a president came removed subsidy, at same time devalued and now increasing tax not to talk of insecurity bad roads etc

If you can find them pls do so and do the Lord's work. The users of these accounts are the type paid to divide the country. they have many accounts they use. today they chat as Yoruba and type hate comments against igbos, tomorrow they will comment as igbo and type hate comments against Yorubas, next tomorrow they will comment as Hausa and type hate comments against Igbos. This is their full time job. They work online for these criminals in government . Mark these accounts and begin to see the truth. They have so many accounts on Nairaland, they register some with names like abayomison200 or BabatundeLion or UchennachuksEko or Obison or ObidientUche or Musa400 or Abdulahizone4you.

They are very dangerous people because they will do anything for money, They are even ready to work with bokoharam to wipe out their own village for money

Most Nigerian leader/ministers top to bottom are fantastically corrupt, they can never mention the price per kilometers.

Do you know the cost of buildings, roads and railways in Nigeria is very expressive compared to other European countries??

IMAGINE!!!

Road construction is pretty expensive to be honest. Even if you pour 20 tips of granites it will not even show for 200 meters.
