Let's be clear: traditional rulers in Nigeria have no constitutional powers to impose or issue bans. Their roles are mostly symbolic, advisory, mediatory, and cultural, especially on issues concerning festivals and traditional events.

If a traditional ruler wants something to be made law, the correct channel is to submit a request or proposal to the State House of Assembly so it can be debated (and implemented if necessary) by elected officials representing their constituents. Concerned residents of Lagos state should consider challenging this matter in court, to make it clear that traditional institutions have no legal authority to impose or pronounce bans.

This is important especially because Lagos is the most cosmopolitan city in Nigeria, and allowing unelected officials to issue enforceable directives like this sets a dangerous precedent.

I’m not afraid to speak up, especially when I know someone is exceeding their legal authority that infringes on the rights of others.

This is how illegality becomes the norm. I hope people don’t ignore or succumb to docility thinking it will end there.

Traditional rulers do have constitutional powers. The federal laws are not the only laws in Nigeria; however, nobody have the right to infringe on another’s freedom of expression.

I think we both agree the ban is illegal. They have state constitutional authority to exist for specific purposes highlighted in the OP, but not to impose or pronounce bans.

Maybe you should read the letter of the Office of the Oba of Lagos attached to that post on nairaland.

I believe the author of that topic misrepresented the correspondence. The Oba wrote a petition to the Lagos State government to protest about the program.

Lagos go soon understand say ndigbo mean business with annexing Lagos. grin

And let me be clear, when they eventually get Biafra Republic, Lagos is still going to be their commercial state. grin

Omoh....see eh...obsession is a disease.

But motivation is healthy.

Progress in Lagos should motivate others to build theirs, but na obsession we dey see. grin

Channel your energy into productive ventures. We know where to challenge people when they overstep their boundaries. It's insane to leave your own culture and start promoting someone else's culture! To what end exactly? Imagine an Igbo man trying to be more Yoruba than Ooni of Ife!

But we should read to understand without applying emotions.

The original post clearly stated the Oba of Lagos sent a memo to the Special adviser on Tourism to impose the ban.

He could not impose the ban himself.

Whoever put this on front page also should do better

The Oba of Lagos forwarded a petition to LASG.. blame the poster on Nl for misrepresenting facts.
The message is clear.. stop having headaches over Yoruba affairs, go and face your own enclave.

Imagine an Igbo convening event about Yoruba people and culture.. is that not invitation to anarchy and conflict?. Yorubas will continue to put you lots in your place.

Yoruba image and culture must be preserved and protected at all cost.

Lagos no matter how cosmopolitan it is, is still some peoples village and heritage which is deeply rooted in Yoruba culture and traditions. We won’t sacrifice that on the alter of one Nigeria or it been a cosmopolitan city, he who have ears, let them hear undecided

Strange that someone needs to tell them this. Don't they give them orientation before they crown them? I was surprised last year when they said the Ooni had banned "middlemen" in the food business. Smh.

Next time, be reading to understand.
