CAN Clarifies Stand on “Christian Genocide” Claims, Urges Justice and National Unity | The Bureau News

The Bureau News reports that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has clarified its position on reports alleging a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria, stating that while numerous Christian communities have suffered violent attacks, its advocacy remains anchored on justice, peace, and truth.

The clarification was contained in a statement released on Wednesday and signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh. The statement followed recent remarks by United States Senator Ted Cruz, who accused Nigerian authorities of complicity in what he termed “systematic religious persecution.”

CAN Responds to U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s Allegations

Senator Cruz, in an interview with Fox News Digital, alleged that over 52,000 Christians had been killed in Nigeria since 2009, and more than 20,000 churches and schools destroyed. He also announced plans to introduce a bill — the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act — which seeks sanctions against officials allegedly complicit in religious persecution.

Responding, Archbishop Okoh said CAN had followed “recent conversations about faith and violence in Nigeria with deep concern.” He acknowledged that many Christian communities, especially in Northern Nigeria, had experienced severe attacks, loss of life, and destruction of worship centers.

“CAN affirms, without hesitation, that many Christian communities in parts of Nigeria, especially in the North, have suffered severe attacks, loss of life, and the destruction of places of worship. These realities remind us of the urgent need for government and security agencies to act decisively to protect every citizen,” Okoh stated.

Advocacy Guided by Peace and Justice — CAN

The Bureau News gathered that Archbishop Okoh emphasized CAN’s longstanding commitment to peaceful advocacy rather than inflammatory rhetoric. “Our concern has always been to seek justice and protection, not to inflame division or hatred,” he said.

He listed CAN’s advocacy efforts to include mechanisms for documenting religiously motivated killings, correspondence with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, and engagement with international Christian organisations such as the World Evangelical Alliance and the Lausanne Movement.

Despite these initiatives, CAN lamented that many of its calls for protection had been ignored or delayed, urging the Federal Government to take “urgent, transparent, and equitable action” to end the killings and bring perpetrators to justice.

Call for National Healing and Equal Protection

Okoh further appealed to the government and security agencies to ensure equitable protection for all Nigerians, stressing that peace remains too fragile to be taken for granted. He also urged Christian leaders to act with wisdom, unity, and faith in this period of national uncertainty.

“Nigeria’s healing will not come from denial or blame, but from courage — the courage to face our collective failures, to grieve together, and to rebuild trust within our communities. Only then can our nation rise from its wounds and embrace a future of genuine peace,” Okoh concluded.

Why can’t Peter Obi capitalize on this Christian genocide to become president ?
Re: Genocide: CAN Urges Justice, Protection Of Christians by Ramon92:
This is not about religion (they dont give a damn about that), it's about power, politics and advancing their own interests where they see fit.

The same American Christians supporting the killing of Muslims in Gaza here saying nonsense.

They see Nigeria is gradually recovering and will soon pose a threat to their political and economic hegemony in Africa, in a near future multipolar world where their powers are gradually fading and Nigeria, has its always been, it's in a position to become a regional powerhouse.

They nearly succeeded with ethnicity as a violent weapon in the 1960s and 70s but we showed our resilience and after it became a mental war when that didn't work like in other African countries.

On our path to recovery, they gave us SAP in the 80s as a poisonous gift which finally crippled us.
MKO Abiola saw this and he became a threat to their interests, religious sentiments were involved and the rest is history.

Now another dispensation is here that's putting Nigeria back on track and religion is now their weapon again.

This is how it'll play out - they're quite aware of Nigeria security challenges, which is indirectly funded by them to target our Agriculture especially our food supply.

What do you notice the regions and areas with security challenges have in common? Farmlands and resource rich areas. That's one of the reasons we have food inflation over the years and have to depend on imports.

Same template in other major economic sectors.

They'll pass a legislation that'll limit Nigeria's access to get arms and tech needed to tackle the challenges under the guise of religious war, rights and whatever grammar they usually package it with, while at the same pass weapons and tech to the insurgents and term it religious war.

This will give them an excuse to intervene to 'protect religious rights' and its chaos all over again. They'll have cheap access to our resources and control our food supply chain leading to economic crisis since our government won't have leverage again.

Same template, same cycle..

It's time we Nigerians realize this and refuse to let any ignorant US Senator dictate how our collective future will be.

I suspect tribal bigotry as usual. Now tell us, how many Christians are members of the APC party? And how many APC supporters are there in the country? One thousand? One million?
Stop stoking hatred up and down simply because politicians from your tribe didn’t win in elections, or because you think everybody doesn’t like you!

It has always been motivated by politics right from inception, its leaders are not running their churches for jesus, they all established their churches for the money they’ll potentially make from politicians! Their sheepy members can debunk that till eternity but we all know the truth about them!

I think CAN, aligning with the federal government denied the report, now they're admitting it. What a shame. These religious groups or bodies are all hypocrites. Only Jesus can save.

Hmmm... Now, Christians and CAN are talking about genocide against their people. I think Muslims, too, should come out and say the same thing because many Muslims are also losing their lives in the North East and Central North. Who knows if it is the Christian version that is killing Muslims?
Only the traditionalists and atheists are free from this.
