Seems like it's only ASUU that this current FG listens to?

The other tertiary institution unions like SSANU and NASU coming together under the umbrella of JAC have been threatening for strike for like a month now, and yet FG did not even pay any attention to them.

This type of disparity is what I just don't understand.

What’s the combined budget for health and education? Should we jeopardize the stability of the FX market being enjoyed by 150 million Nigerians because of less than 2 million in the universities? They should proceed with their strike; it’ll be the last strike they’ll ever do because the government will be forced to finally do the right thing, which is to sell schools to private owners and fund higher school fees through student loans. NURTW, that’s more important to the daily lives of Nigerians, has not gotten 1% of the attention and funds ASUU has gotten over the years. Yet, if they choose to go on strike, right, it’s a national shutdown—tertiary education is not a right. In fact, I’d rather the government focus on primary and secondary education and sell off all these leeches.
Yikes!!

So much passion and common sense in what you have said.

I always trip for people who are definitely smarter than I am.

To deepen your thoughts, I just realized that it's only a few people that ASUU engage. Albeit, I also understand that the government had made promises over the years to them so it's not really their faults too anyway.

Thanks for the clarity.

This government is insensitive to the plight of Nigerian university lecturers, Nigerian professors, who produced best medical and science brains, legal brains and engineering brains etc are paid less than 350 dollars per month.
Nigerian professors are the most impoverished professors in the whole of west Africa.
This is the worst country in Africa to be a professor.
The wickedness of this current government is terrifying. This current Nigerian government has no regards to education, they have totally destroyed the university education.

If a professor is being paid 350 dollars per month, where is the motivation to work?

Education is the tap root of every nation development and this government of certificate forgers and touts are fighting ASUU in order to totally destroy it completely.

Because uneducated society, is a society that can be easily manipulated.
I agree with you that the government is insensitive.
But let's discuss pay.
Lecturers in Nigeria are paid less compared to their counterpart in other countries.
That statement is very true for every last profession in the country. This includes those in professionals, non professional careers and artisans.

Pay in Nigeria will never be at mark with those in other part of the world for many reasons. Yes it can get better, and it should. But we need to stop doing that comparism.
If we go by it, everyone will go on strike. Even ur gateman, your chef, and all your staffs, if you have.

The salary of medical doctors in Nigeria is less than x10 of what they earn in some parts of the world. The salary of ordinary labourer in some part of world is more than x10 what they earn here in Nigeria.
Everyone can chose to complain.

Better pay is needed for everyone, so that we can all live better lives.

If Tinubu successfully prevented ASUU from going on strike for the whole of his 1st term, any Nigeria student who refused to vote him for 2nd term doesn't understand what students used to go through to complete just 4years course before.

Contradiction by Alausa. If you say they have been patient, then strike isn't their first resort.

For crying out loud, what do this ASUU people want? I have been seeing over the past weeks, recruitments by many universities. This shows that the FG has increased their allocation. They need to apply some patience too. Things will change gradually.
Patient for how long. For eternity when the FG keep promised them that the education minister even denied the previous negotiations until he later apologies that indeed there was an agreement. For 2 years now has FG paid or settle part of the agreement.
But you want them to be patient. ASUU members have family too they need to take care of themselves and family. The school need to develop more than it is. We will not play the sentiment of it will affect students. So it should now affect their own happiness naa.

All these union self na part of Nigeria problem, Strick is always their first shot
How is Union a Nigeria problem. Since you are not in such Union or work there that is why you will say this. You guys want ASUU to sacrifice their own happiness for students. The only language government understand is strike otherwise they will never do anything meaningful to workers. You think Unions were established out of bad and unwise reasons. Government time and time again always fail in the promises.

I believe ASUU wants to drag the FG to the negotiating table and I support their cause though I don't want it to cause a hiatus in the system. For God's sake why should a 2009 agreement still be unfulfilled more than fifteen years later? Tertiary education workers are suffering financially. They aren't even receiving the new minimum wage adjustments yet. The selfish elite are trying to pauperise tertiary education just like they did to basic education.

There is insincerity on the part of Government. The Minister is saying that money has been allocated for this and that. Arrears will be paid in 2026 etc. Once ASUU stop agitating, the Government will not do anything for them and the cycle will continue next year. Arrears is what you are owing them from the work they have already done. At least settle that to show how serious you are
We are talking about arrear of 2023 (12 months), promotion arrears of more than four years and a New salary structure. IMO State Haa 800k for a professor whereas the FG is still paying between 500-600k to a professor.

Wow!! Just Wow!!

Seems today is a day for smart people to comment on nairaland.

This "cherry picking" attitude of a couple of professions to highlight their relevance as if other professions are irrelevant is becoming nauseating jare.

Even me wey employ plenty staff is underpaid, when compared to my mates abroad.

Your FG has has been boasting to the world of having save more than 45 billion dollars in some foreign account. Why cant they invest just 3% of that amount in Education and 2% in health then steal the rest of the money as usual by buying expensive properties in UK US and CANADA
Ignorance is indeed bliss.

Olote, you don't have anything to gain by tarnishing people's image or an entity, in this case FG.

ASUU no go get mind go strike after all the funds being released to them by FG. Organization of greedy old men who prefer to hold their students to ransom, rather than facing their problems squarely with the FG
You doctors go on strike, and their strike has never been about the hospital or the health sector but about their pay and welfare, yet you don't vilify them.

The university dons go on strike for your educational system, and yet you vilify them.

What is happening?

Thanks for your kind words — no agreement or contract is cast in stone; it depends on the capacity of the parties to execute. Re-negotiation or arbitration is the norm, or in the worst case, ASUU should go to court. This idea of going on strike will only expedite their route to extinction or irrelevance, just as seen with PENGASSAN, who have now lost their appeal with the masses. Without the support of the masses, it's impossible to challenge the government.

So government should carry the whole money in the country to pay lecturers that enjoy different kind of grants to study, so other people in the country are not important, do you know what those working with the private organizations go through, those working in factories, bank , hotel etc,it is only the lecturers that should be pampered abi, some will even be comparing them to senators and politicians, If they like let them contest and become politician, enough of this nonsense, others in other professions too are suffering even more that professors and lectures, let us hear word a beg

I still keep wondering if ASUU is the only organized union in this country.
They have truncated innocent students faith with so many incessant strike.
No other union has caused havoc and damage to the educational sector than them.
Private universities are doing well by managing their resources accordingly, tho at a very exorbitant rate.
But even overseas, education doesn't come cheap.
The current governor must find a lasting solution to this reoccurring issues that have been outstanding for ages.
You have to look at it from 2 sides ...
Yes the strike is very very bad for students and keeps them in school longer than they should...but then again the state at which our universities(public) are right now, is not encouraging if we are being honest...there is very little innovation going on even when we are in an age of technological advancement all over the work....the lecturers are not giving their best, student are not being taught the right way...I strike the solution? NO...should government do better with budgeting and implementation in our schools? ABSOLUTELY

I have Neva been affected by doctors strike and so are many people, bcs Nigerians hardly go to hospital unless when critically ill. But u see this ASUU people, have made many Nigeria students spend extra years in the university. 5 years course turning to 7 years bcs of their strike, it's not fair. That's one of the achievements of Tinubu government, he have stopped them from those unescerry strikes unlike during Buhari government

The last time they went on strike for a year they almost died of hunger. Some of them developed stroke while the lucky ones managed to japa. I thought they would have gotten wiser, but it's clear they haven't learnt any lesson.
