When Will We Truly Learn Tolerance?

Yesterday, a disturbing video went viral showing a female student in Ilorin (a Federal Government school, for that matter) being barred from entering her school simply because she wore a hijab.

Honestly, one cannot help but ask: When will we learn to tolerate one another in this country?

Has the Nigerian Constitution suddenly changed to deny people the freedom to profess and practice their faith openly? What happened to the Supreme Court judgment that explicitly affirmed the right of Muslim girls to wear hijab in schools if they so wish?

Even more ironic this happened in Ilorin, a city with a rich Islamic heritage and majority Muslim population. If such acts of intolerance can happen there, what should we expect elsewhere?

But then again, what exactly is the problem?
If my daughter wears a hijab, or my wife chooses to wear a niqab, have I forced it upon anyone’s daughter? Why then should it become a national issue?

The truth is, until we begin to genuinely respect each other’s faith and freedom, peace and unity will remain elusive in this country. Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and that freedom must mean the right to live our beliefs, not just declare them.

Even in some Western countries, with a much smaller Muslim population, women are allowed to wear hijab or niqab freely in schools and public spaces. So, what exactly is our excuse here in Nigeria, a country that proudly claims to uphold religious liberty?

Let’s be honest, this isn’t about dress code. It’s about tolerance, respect, and justice.
And until we uphold these, we’ll keep failing as a truly united people.

What is the origin and purpose of uniform? OP should research that and it will clear his/her ignorance.

For other more willing learners, the uniform ware was meant to achieve the exact opposite of what OP fo-olishly/ignorantly advocates for here. It was suppose to close the social divide and allow everyone be uniform in appearance as much as possible. The issue of some overzealous folks, showing up that they have kidnapped an imaginary being called god or prophet, so therefore can supremely interpret the words of the god/prophet, is laughable at best. What makes you more mislim than someone from Abia or Delta with contradicting views?

The ban on wearing a hijab in the school was introduced only in order to preserve the internal order of the school in accordance with the principles of secularism. Outside the school bans on this issue do not apply.

Have meet like 10 Christian ladie who are at alhikma university and they all wear hijab. If you can't respect a school dressing code why went there in the first place. There is a primary school in same ilorin that all there female teacher are eleha.

When we decide to separate religion from education. When we ready to obey every school rules. If school A in his form said they dont want such dress code, we can go to school B that want it.

Most countries are now calling for the ban of it. It’s now a security threat. That’s what terrorists will use to commit their act. Thieves used it to shoplift, adulterers used it to disguise themselves.

They go to a place willingly and seek to change the rules therein to accommodate some wierd interpretation of some religious book they're not custodian of. That why you have Palestine Israel conflict today.

If something is acceptable or beneficial for one person, it should also be acceptable for another.

Advocating for equal treatment and the absence of double standard.

just tird of those people. Hope the person don't do the. Vidoe for context becus am sure the game man in the video is a Muslim with the new cap on his head. Alhikma university is Islamic faith base school, they accept Muslim student but you most wear hijab that is there rules.

If you want your children to wear hijab to school, send them to muslim schools, don't disturb us with baseless issues.

The principle of secularism is what schools follow, which means everyone must wear the same thing. Muslims are always trying to change rules and overturn the system, always complaining as if you're the only ones in the country.

It's an institution that wants uniformity for his entire students, so allow peace to reign by dressing the way they want, or you take Ur daughter to other government schools that allow it, I'm very sure, several govt school allow hijab in Ilorin, but since its in the DNA of Muslim to always cause PEACE, they must surely cause PEACE.

It's a Private school. its a staff school and does not belong to the government.
