Shehu Sani is indirectly telling us that Buhari was smarter than Tinubu in governance, because Buhari rejected IMF's advise while Tinubu followed their advise, now Tinubu supporters want us to believe that Tinubu is better than Peter Obi, the question to them: is Buhari better than Peter Obi?
Honestly, Tinubu and Buhari possess more impressive track records than Obi, who is being vigorously promoted solely due to the Igbos' determination to secure the Nigerian presidency by any means necessary. Northerners would rather cast their votes for a deceased Buhari than a living Obi. Interestingly, we can find discussions on Nairaland from 2012 where Igbos themselves expressed their discontent with Obi's incompetence during his governorship in Anambra. Now, they claim he surpasses a visionary leader like Tinubu, which is difficult to accept. It seems improbable that Obi represents the best the Igbos have to offer; perhaps they are just not in favor of their most capable candidates.

Peace!

In the case of the world renown first class accountant, it's not like she has any other choice than to do whatever she is told to do

They have her exactly where they want

Truly, I really pity her

May God not let our ambitions lead us into damnation

Unsequenced PMS subsidy removal and Floating a currency without a managed model have a full blown effect that we currently see.

Nigeria will not come out this Poverty issues with advisers like you.

grandstar:
What you have written is very wrong and makes no sense.

Why does the IMF demand the end of consumer subsidies?

Because these subsidies leave a massive hole in government in the budget and the government is now forced to borrow lots of money to sustain the subsidy. The massive borrowing mounts pressure on the local currency which forces it to depreciate. That was what was happening during Buhari's government.

Why does the IMF demand for unified exchange rates? Imagine the official exchange rate was $1-N500, and the parralel exchange rate is $1-N1,000, and you were sent $200, where will you exchange it?

Buhari knew that the entire north would be the worst affected out of all six of Nigeria's geopolitical zones, that's why

He want any brighter and he never planned to do better by Nigeria, it was just his tribalistic orientation at work
Are you sure about that? Most of you have never been to the North but your kinsmen who come to the North never want to leave. Life is cheaper in the North and worse case scenario, everyone can farm. Is that the case where you come from or you simply transport food from the North and impose outrageous prices on them that your people can barely afford? I heard everyone is a billionaire over there. Hate to be the guy

So here is our situation at August 2022
1.Debt servicing...SERVICING...was eating 97% of our revenue
2.Subsidy costs were growing to the point that we were approaching spending one third of our budget on subsides, and it was a rising
3.Oil prices had fallen and were falling since 2014, and as a result, there be budget deficits. Also, not enough forex to pay for anything, including naira strengthening
4.Effective forex revenue by May 2023 was 4 billion dollars...down from 32 billion in 2016.

Now, forget that tinubu was in power. If it was you, you cannot afford to keep subsides and you cannot afford to keep the naira down under these circumstances. If you were faced with the above, and you wanted to do that,....you will end up with even more and more debt...because that means that you will take even more loans than tinubu is taking, and our debt would be reaching 300 trillion naira soon.

If you want to blame anyone, blame the APC government that since 2015 did not diversify the economy. The choices buhari supported by tinubu made since 2015 are where we are today. (Precceding governments also have their own role to play too). INFACT...buhari, supported by tinubu, 1) backed protests against gej removal of subsidy 2) disregarded IMF advice, and kept subsides, to the point that he was borrowing to pay for them on a massive scale, and even printing money to pay for subsides 3) refused to float the naira...and as a result, thanks to the forex scarcity, naira was virtually difficult to get at offical rate by 2021, if not earlier...and then the elite was doing floating of the naira.

We have never been rich enough, anyway, to sustain subsides...which is why it has been proposed since 1987 that we remove them, and everytime Nigerians said no. As a result we lost four refineries, and until DANGOTE came around in 2014, we had no new investment in new refineries. We have had subsidised power for decades, and as a result power generation and grid collapses are the order of the day. And we lost Nitel and Mtel to hefty subsides too.

If you want our country to be rich, you got to develop an industrial base that exports manufactured goods and services...which is what china and korea and japan , who in 1960 were broke and dirt poor, and in some cases worse than newly independent African nations...did. That provides enough revenue for subsides...production subsides. Consumption subsides worsen debt and cause more problems ...and our doing consumption subsides is why we are in so much debt and poor...not the IMF. Not the world bank, not the 'imperialists' or 'religion''

The perception of an incumbent government as a failure is primarily fueled by opposition parties seeking power, irrespective of the current administration's efforts. They effectively convinced us that Jonathan's administration was a failure to secure our votes. Similarly, they have portrayed Buhari's administration as unsuccessful and are now employing the same tactics to discredit Tinubu. This pattern suggests that opposition parties are more interested in fulfilling their own presidential ambitions than in addressing the nation's problems.

By continuously falling prey to our politicians political narratives, we enable them to manipulate public opinion, prioritizing their greed and selfish interests over the betterment of the country. As seen in the case of Jonathan's administration, the use of insurgencies to create instability and depict him as incompetent ultimately led to his removal from office. This strategy is being repeated to target Tinubu, taking advantage of Nigeria's vulnerability to such tactics.

Despite the challenges Tinubu faces in implementing policies such as fuel subsidy removal and naira floatation, he has laid a foundation for future administrations to build upon and address the nation's problems. However, if you ask any presidential aspirant from the opposition parties (Atiku, Obi etc) if they would revert these policies should they come to power, they would say "no", as they acknowledge the need for such reforms. Yet, they still seek to remove Tinubu from office due to their own presidential ambitions, not because they are better suited to lead the country.

Lol. Even if Jonathan, Buhari and Tinubu were unable to provide a comprehensive solution during their tenures, they has established a solid foundation upon which future administrations can build and continue the process of addressing the nation's problems. Moreover, the complex issues plaguing Nigeria require a multi-faceted and long-term approach that transcends any single political figure or election cycle.

To be candid, each leader faces significant challenges during their tenure. However, Nigeria appears to have experienced a decline in leadership quality since Obasanjo's administration. Yaradua did not perform better than Obasanjo, Jonathan did not surpass Yaradua, and Buhari failed to outperform Jonathan.

Regarding the comparison between Buhari, Jonathan and Tinubu, it's important to note that Tinubu's situation is unique and cannot be labeled a failure, particularly considering the poor economic state he inherited and his bold decisions to remove fuel subsidies and float the naira. These actions demonstrate courage that Jonathan and Buhari lacked. One thing remains certain: if given the opportunity, Obi would not surpass Tinubu in performance.

It would be naïve to overlook the role of opposition parties in sabotaging the efforts of the incumbent government to discredit them. This is the nature of politics.

Addressing competence, I've previously argued that democracy tends to favor popularity over competence. As a result, competent leaders are elected only occasionally, amidst a series of incompetent but popular ones, though this reality is often unacknowledged.

Furthermore, our political landscape is dominated by politicians rather than technocrats. Internal party politics often hinder the appointment of technocrats, as there's pressure for the president's choice of ministers to be comprised of at least 70% party members.

Many presidential aspirants are driven by their long-term ambitions to become president, regardless of their competence or lack thereof. Sadly, these ambitions are often pursued at the expense of the public's best interests.

That's what annoys me about many NIgerian governments...past and present. Any problem they face, they blame the opposition.

Well, you were voted to fix the problem, not to excuse it. SO effing fix it.

It's ironic that, when comparing the administrations, Yaradua did not perform better than Obasanjo, and Jonathan did not surpass Yaradua's accomplishments. Similarly, Buhari failed to outperform Jonathan during his time in office. In this context, Buhari's shortcomings appear justified. Before assigning blame, it is essential to identify the underlying cause of these issues. The root of our current predicament can be traced back to Obasanjo's tenure. Despite his notable contributions to the country, we still grapple with the consequences of his decisions.

The Olusegun Obasanjo military regime introduced fuel subsidies in Nigeria in 1977. The practice of "defending" the Naira, which entails managing its exchange rate, began in the 1980s with the implementation of the Second-Tier Foreign Exchange Market (SFEM) and the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in 1986, although exchange rate policies have since undergone numerous revisions.
As time progressed, the costs of subsidizing fuel and defending the naira became an unbearable burden for the country.

Throughout Obasanjo's tenure, his administration failed to address these issues. Yaradua tried to tackle them but encountered challenges, as he focused more on managing the problem rather than finding a permanent solution. During Jonathan's term, he recognized the pressing issues, particularly the widespread fuel subsidy fraud, and made efforts to address them. However, opposition parties exploited the populace's gullibility, hindering his attempts. Upon assuming office, Buhari faced the same challenges but lacked the courage to confront them due to concerns about potential adverse impacts on the poor. Buhari's administration failed because the problems he attempted to manage grew significantly compared to Jonathan's tenure, and they would have become even more insurmountable during Tinubu's presidency.

Had Tinubu not addressed these problems, his administration would have fared worse than the combined tenures of Obasanjo, Yaradua, Jonathan, and Buhari, as the issues have become increasingly complex and unmanageable. It is crucial not to ignore or merely manage problems but to actively seek solutions. While all the administrations that neglected these issues ultimately failed, the one leader who took action to address the root causes of our predicament is paradoxically the one we wish to remove from power. grin

OBJ met the country worse than he met it and still improved the country even with subsidies being paid, Yaradua was already towing the same path but sickness didn't let him stay through his tenure, Jonathan though he messed up but still tried to maintain some level.

Buhari came and destroyed far more than he met and Tinubu is towing that same path, the stats here are not lying...

So no one should blame should any predecessor for failing to improve on what he met as president, That's what Buhari did and that;s what Tinubu is already doing.

Lol. Is the perceived inaccuracy in my argument related to the fact that Obasanjo initiated fuel subsidies and naira defense measures? Or does it concern the notion that his decisions have led to growing challenges that have weakened our economy? Buhari inherited an economy already in decline due to the effects of subsidy and naira defense, yet he continued paying subsidies and defending the naira until the country could no longer sustain it. He borrowed heavily and sold some of our crude oil in advance just to keep these policies going.

You condemn Buhari as though you would do better if given the chance. Buhari was just like you when Jonathan was president; he thought he could do better—promising one naira to one dollar and solutions to youth unemployment—until he got the opportunity, and for eight years only took the country backward. The presidency of Nigeria is like a football pitch: when you’re not playing, it’s easy to spot mistakes and criticize players for missed goals or poor passes, but once you’re on the pitch, you realize it’s as challenging for you as for anyone else. Buhari discovered this firsthand.

It’s not fair to label Tinubu as a failure like Jonathan and Buhari. Tinubu’s situation is unique and cannot be judged the same way, especially considering the poor economic state he inherited. So is his fault removing subsidy and floating the naira—policies that are good but come with their own challenges? Should he be called a failure just because the policy brings hardship? Furthermore, all the 2023 presidential aspirants, including Atiku and Obi, also planned to remove the subsidy and possibly float the naira. Lol, Are you upset simply because your preferred candidate did not lead these reforms?

Peace!
