Lagos/calabar Coastal Highway: Umai Challenges Makinde To Open Debate by olajay86(op): 6:30pm On Oct 11, 2025
As controversy lingers over the Average Cost and Estimated cost of Road Construction under the present Administration, the Minister of Works, Dave Umai said he remains unperturbed regarding the outburst of the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

Umai while addressing Journalists after an inspection of road construction in Nasarawa State, Umai called out Governor Makinde on open debate on the matter.

The Minister has led officials of the Federal Ministry of Works on an inspection of an ongoing road project in Nasarawa, where he was joined by the Governor the state, Sule Abdullahi.

Making clarification on the cost per kilometer of road, Umai said cost per kilometer could be divided into estimated cost, which has element of variance and average cost, which is definitive.

That is a fact. Makinde either does not know what he is saying or throwing political jabs. How can you give a cost per kilometer of a coastal highway? Which engineer in the world can do that? Are the terrains the same. Will the construction on land be the same as the one on the water ways or will the same water ways have the same cost per kilometer?

Umahi should ignore Seyi and not give him that attention he is craving for.

We know and can see the developmental strides of Umahi as a Governor in Ebonyi states.

What has Seyi Achieved?

The only news that comes out of Oyo state is death of a king or coronation ceremony. Nothing else.

I back Umahi here. While the element of corruption cannot be removed entirely from the processes involved in delivering public infrastructure in Nigeria, I believe the Lagos-Calabar highway is a pivotally crucial infrastructure project, like Third Mainland Bridge for example, for the Tinubu Government.

Important and definitive to the extent there will be good accountability and transparency over it's costing to tackle noise sure to come from many opportunist detractors plenty in Nigerian politics. Like Obi, Atiku, El Rufai etal

Umahi has challenged Makinde to a debate. Let him accept if sure of himself.

A whole governor of a state behaving like an illiterate. I was surprised that Makinde could be this dumb. Sometimes as a governor, it's better you close your mouth if you are ignorant about some things.

Pettiness is allowed in politics. In USA the Democrats and Republicans are also very petty.

Mediocre at best in my opinion. Certainly not commendable as Sanwo Olu for example. Umahi acquited himself well as Governor and he is doing a good Job as works Minister.

Dead PDP just trying to shake small yansh to remind they are still existing lol.

So the taxpayer should give Umahi a blank cheque
Just continue building honourable minister when money finish ask for more?

Is that your point?

You do not know what you are saying

Is this the first road to be built in Nigeria or the world? When we listen to folk like you we would believe a road has never been budgeted for and built in Nigeria

Weak

there is no need for name calling
Let us assume he is wrong doest not justify calling him dumb

That comes from a place of weakness

The same mindset that says Rufai is too small
That claims to be a professor

We can disagree and educate ourselves without hatred

Why must it be so acrimonious?

It is public money and people have a right to ask questions

I do not agree with Umahi simply because there is no way I as a private citizen would build a house and work with an engineer that does not give me a budget or calls me ignorant when I ask for cost

If I am ignorant his job is to educate me

I cannot give him a blank cheque

We must have a maximum limit as budget for the road

How can you build a road with no budget and no completion date
That is very suspicious

You can't indict Umahi here. Yes he is fiery by nature but we all know these attacks over cost per KM is mischievous and the work of political opposition that knows the Lagos-Calabar coastal road is one hugely impressive project, even by global standards that will gain the Tinubu Government massive plaudits.

They therefore identify it as a big and major target they can continue to use to gaslight the PBAT government in the effort to discredit it.

Of course it is for this same reason Umahi and Tinubu will know it is crucial to not give their enemies anything to work with.

Umahi has explained himself well over cost per KM which he gave as around 2 billion Naira averagely but subject to adhoc changes accounting for terrain and topography problems etal.

Makinde and co are just being mischievous and I can understand Umahi's anger and irritation with them all.

What has Seyi achieved as a governor? Sincerely only what I can remember as Seyi achievement is to be burying Kings on yearly basis and installing new king every year.

And his another achievement is to installed wrong Alaafin with packaged CV from Canada, became king and turned terror.

Another Seyi achievement is to be attending party and functions where foods are served, eat, do handshake and go home. To even speak English hard him. To even talk smart hard him. To even walk and think smart hard him.

Imagine an Engineer asking such silly question of how much a kilometer of a road cost?

Yes. We voted them so we must trust them. If we want to hold them accountable we must ask REASONABLE questions. Reasonable Questions like: How many kilometers have you done so far and how much have you spent in all? If necessary we ask for breakdown that separates money spent on materials, labour, consultations etc.
Not UNREASONABLE Questions like: How much did you spend PER KILOMETER? That is a very very UNREASONABLE Question.

So I put it to you (in your Rufai Voice), which engineer in the world will give you a cost breakdown of a COASTAL HIGHWAY per kilometer?

All of these times he's wasting getting into fights with everyone. He could have just used it to tell us what the average cost, cost per kilometer or whatever nomenclature of the road. When Tinubu is voted out, it would be Umahi in the Dock answering questions. Not Tinubu nor Gilbert Chagoury.

I'm in support they should stop it; Umahi and Makinde.

The coastal road is a project of Tinubu, the cost, design and everything are all Tinubu designated, so Makinde should channel his grievances in right quarter.
