Presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga has given reasons why President Tinubu gave Maryam Sanda a presidential pardon after she killed her husband.

Maryam Sanda, 37. Sentenced to death in 2020 for culpable homicide and had spent six years, eight months at Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre.

Onanuga said Sanda’s family pleaded for her release, arguing that it was in the best interest of her two children.

The plea was also anchored on her good conduct in jail, her remorse, and her embracement of a new lifestyle, demonstrating her commitment to being a model prisoner.

It seems we are forgetting a very important part of this whole process. The President did not singlehandedly approve the pardon. A Presidential committee was inaugurated from across the spectrum and they came up with recommendations which were submitted to the council of state for approval.
Unfortunately, some people read only to comment and get likes but not to understand for future reference. This goes to show the level of our educational systems, producing graduates who are quick to talk but slow to understanding.

The decision followed the recommendations of the presidential advisory committee on the prerogative of mercy (PACPM), chaired by Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice.

Other members of the committee include Akinlolu Olujinmi, Alkasum Abba, Nike Sidikat Ijaiya, Augustine Utsaha, and Onwusoro Maduka, the secretary.

Institutional representatives on the committee include officials from the ministry of special duties and inter-governmental affairs, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigerian Correctional Service, the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The report, presented to the council of state in Abuja, showed that 175 inmates were interviewed and 294 applications reviewed.

According to the report, “Eighty-two inmates were recommended for clemency, two for pardon, sixty-five for reduction of prison terms, and seven on death row for commutation to life imprisonment.”

It added that 15 ex-convicts were recommended for presidential pardon, including the late Ogoni Nine, while four others were proposed for posthumous national honours.

The committee adopted criteria such as old age, terminal illness, long-term imprisonment, good conduct, and rehabilitation in its recommendations.

I have a friend who was only four when he lost both parents, today he's a man doing well for himself, married and blessed with four boys and a girl.

He takes the overall responsibility, He gave the final approval. He's responsible and we must hold him accountable.

She wasn't the only one that was pardoned, so what's the fuss all about.

Besides, if you people want your Lord MNK to get same, kindly wait till he is convicted and then if he is remorseful thereafter and not start insulting the Lawyer and Judges, then we can talk of pardon.

There is nothing wrong with or about the pardon . Convicts of worse crimes have been pardoned in the past
But your last advice is what is very very valid and this is what I have been saying to men in every forum I have been asked to talk . Men should priotise their happiness and health over everything . Dont sacrifice your life , happiness or health all in the name of live for your wife or kids , now the woman will come out , the kids will hug her , forgive her but the man is dead , they will graduate , become successful and be taking care of the woman ,.

Huh! This is crazy! It was a cold blooded murder, and could have even been premeditated, so there is no justification for her pardon. Criminals always feel remorseful after they are caught, and using that as reason for her pardon is totally ridiculous. If her death sentence is not commuted to life, then the president might as well pardon every remorseful criminal who is a parent because their children are missing them too. Obviously, the president was advised wrongly and he should do the needful by commuting her death sentence to life in jail.
