Iyanya Opens Up On Hidden Struggles Of Male Celebrities by alphonsoolajide(op): 6:13am On Oct 13, 2025
Nigerian Afropop star Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, popularly known as Iyanya, has opened up about the emotional and mental struggles faced by male celebrities, sparking an important conversation across social media.

In a deeply reflective post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the “Your Waist” crooner reminded fans that fame, money, and popularity do not shield celebrities from pain, loneliness, or depression. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

“Celebrities Are Humans Too” — Iyanya Speaks from the Heart

Iyanya described the entertainment industry as a double-edged sword, where public adoration often masks private battles. He explained that behind the glamorous lifestyle and red carpet smiles, many entertainers silently endure emotional pain and burnout.

“Celebrities are humans with deep feelings and struggles like everyone else,” he wrote.
“Beyond the media glamorisation is a person simply yearning to be human like the rest of us.”

His honest message struck a chord with thousands of fans who shared similar sentiments, calling for empathy and understanding toward public figures who are often held to impossible standards.

“Men Are Taught Not to Cry” — Iyanya on the Pressure of Masculinity

Going deeper, Iyanya highlighted the unique struggles of male celebrities, revealing how cultural expectations and toxic masculinity often make it difficult for men to express vulnerability or ask for help.

“Men are wired not to show weakness, not to ask for help, or they risk being called soft,” he wrote.

The singer explained that men in the entertainment industry face immense pressure to appear strong, confident, and unbothered — even when dealing with career setbacks, heartbreak, or mental breakdowns.

He added that this societal conditioning can trap men in silence, forcing them to internalize pain instead of seeking emotional support.

“For male celebrities, there’s often an even deeper struggle to bounce back when one hits a low,” Iyanya said.

The Double-Edged Sword of Fame

Iyanya’s message sheds light on what many insiders describe as the dark side of fame — the constant pressure to perform, remain relevant, and maintain a flawless image in an industry that rarely allows vulnerability.

Behind the scenes, many entertainers deal with loneliness, depression, or anxiety, often without trusted outlets to share their pain. Iyanya’s post has since reignited discussions about mental health awareness in the African entertainment scene, where conversations around therapy and emotional expression remain limited.

Fans and Colleagues React: “A Wake-Up Call for Our Society”

Iyanya’s heartfelt words drew widespread praise from fans, colleagues, and mental health advocates alike.

One fan commented:

“This is the kind of honesty we need from our celebrities. People forget that they bleed too.”

Another wrote:

“Iyanya is right. Men are taught to suppress emotions until they explode. This needs to change.”

Nigerian entertainers, including producers, actors, and fellow musicians, also shared the post, commending Iyanya for using his platform to promote emotional wellness and authenticity.

Several fans described the post as a “wake-up call” to normalize mental health discussions among men, particularly in African societies where emotional openness is often seen as weakness.

Mental Health in the Spotlight

Iyanya’s openness adds to a growing list of Nigerian celebrities who have publicly discussed the pressures of fame and mental health challenges, including Burna Boy, Waje, and Don Jazzy.

His message also aligns with recent advocacy by psychologists and wellness experts urging men to break the silence and seek help when struggling emotionally.

Mental health organizations have since shared Iyanya’s post as an example of how influential figures can help destigmatize therapy and emotional vulnerability.

Iyanya’s Journey: A Story of Resilience
Having experienced the highs and lows of fame — from dominating music charts in the early 2010s to facing personal and career setbacks — Iyanya’s reflection carries authenticity. His willingness to speak openly about emotional challenges positions him as one of the few Nigerian male celebrities championing mental health awareness through lived experience.

As fans continue to discuss his viral post, many have praised him for showing courage through vulnerability and encouraging other men, both in and outside the entertainment world, to do the same.

Final Thoughts

Iyanya’s message is more than just a viral moment — it’s a cultural reset. By pulling back the curtain on fame’s hidden struggles, he has reminded the world that even the brightest stars sometimes battle darkness.

In his words, the goal is not perfection but human connection — a reminder that every celebrity, no matter how successful, still needs understanding, compassion, and room to feel.

Many of you often misuse opportunity when you are at pick, thinking, that is how it will be, rosy for life, forgetting, meanwhile, life is turn by turn. At pick, instead of you to use money flowing into accounts to build other businesses that you guys will fall back on, incase music career goes south. You would be wasting the money on, all kinds of women, clubbing and buying all kinds of luxury cars. Which are eating deep into your accounts.

Within twinkle of an eye, attentions would shift to another new shinning star, to now maintain the reckless lifestyles, you hitherto enjoying, it becomes harder & harder, before you know, depression is imminent.

It's a general problem with the male gender..

From the moment you're given birth to,with a pendulum bulb dangling in-between your legs, just know that you've already scored an own goal.......And the worst part is when you happens to be born into this part of the world, omoh, see plenty own goals angry

Iyanya is right on this 👍

More money doesn't always mean less problems or soft life. No matter how much you earn, life has a way of matching it with problems

If you think I'm wrong, try make friends with someone whom you think has it all, and sincerely take an interest in their lives, you'd eventually discover they have their hidden struggles and challenges too

Public figures and the wealthy ones also encounter problems that make their money or luxury seem useless to them. They also suffer pains, depression and loneliness. They still get divorced, raped, cheated on, cruel emotional manipulation from the one they love, and are not spared from life drama

Well, most of you set yourselves up for misery by biting more than you can chew.

The worst thing a lot of you young men have done and still do today is monetizing relationships and love.

Such a shame!

Men go through a lot, we just wear them via our masculinity (with pride)

If God be for us, who can be against us. There are some things that surely makes one realize that there is a maker whom you need His help when everyone fails you, and He is Jesus. Mental health is really and has so many children and grandchildren

Iyanya Should Have Invested His Earnings Wisely When He Was On Top of The His Game,
Instead He Was Spending His Money On Unnecessary Women, Drinks, And Living a Lifestyle That Was Above His Earnings.
Now he is Grounded, The New Kids On Block Are Not Backing Down, You Better Go And Learn Furniture, Barbing ,Vulcanizing , Tailoring 🪡, Barbeque meat/Fish Preparation , Or Better Still Go to Your Village and Start Farming.

We should sympathise with them because they're celebrities? Abeg, let him swerve... We're all passing through the same issues... They won't remember us when they're splashing money in clubs on drinks, women and dorime

It's just like politicians coming out to say the stress of office is too much, so Nigerians should sympathise with them

He still has money, atleast better than alot of guys.

What he is saying is about the silent and quiet struggles and pains hidden behind all these money.
And its usually hard for you to come out and speak about it, because society will not believe you or will mock you.

It's really not easy for men, I have hit an economic low for a while and begging for help is difficult because receiving a NO for a small help request will add more to the feeling of low.

adamkkk:
well, after i graduated, i realised my only accomplishment was avin a girlfriend that miraculously loved me and she had a career as an army officer.

I had nothing else. I already lost my dad and mum, and the family was divided by my siblings over property sharing formula.

I had no place to go to. I was stranded as myself with a woman that was always giving me hope, even though we meet once in a while only.

before then, i was valued by my peers in sch because I could make their wishes come through. Let me explain, they will tell me what they want me to do for them online and i will create it. I was just creating broker for these guys and they keep getting richer, which also made me a friend to rich friends too.

Polygamy ruined my family. My elder sister is a judge in a court, my elder was a professor, i had two other brothers lecturing in the University. My sisters all married to rich men that always want me to be boi boi to them, which wasnt so bad bt the problem is that i av my own life to live. My elder brother is a practising pharmacist abroad(USA). My younger brother was hmmm, I don't even know bt he was living well with tatoos and new cars and parties here and there. Bt i was depressed.

After much consideration, my gf suggested she gets me a place in Abuja close to her barrack... Which was a very good idea, cos d competition with my family on who turns out to be the biggest, was already making me insane.
Hmmmm deep. Just live your life. Forget competition with them. Last last with all the riches and wealth. You all go still die. So don't be too harsh on yourself. Life is too small
