Brendaniel:Whereas if we had followed your ideas and kept subsidy, keeping fuel at N200 per liter, by now our debt would be nearing the N250 trillion mark, if not higher, and budget deficits would be as high as N20 trillion naira. And we would have no refineries, because no ROI, and dangote refinery would soon be scrap. And we would be losing billions to fuel smuggling. And the forex reserves would be below 1billion dollars..if not worse. (And if any nation has stopped smuggling of subsidised fuel...you are free to give examples. Libya, Iran, Angola, Saudi, and Venezuela have not been successful to date) Venezuela once had a 900000 bpd refinery, which was down to 100000 bpd in 2008...because subsides on fuel. Unless they are run by APC...lol.. Mock APC...they are incompetent, but dont wish fuel subsidy on us again. We should have removed that thing since 1987. If we had, by now we would be refining fuel for over half of Africa and earning millions. |

nairalanda1:What is subsidy? Can you define subsidy? |
| Re: NNPC Hikes Petrol Price To ₦992/Litre In Lagos by nairalanda1(m): 1:44pm On Oct 13, 2025 |
Racoon:SUbsidy was costing us N6 trillion for the first 6 months of 2023...at a trillion a month. Keeping it would have by now been costing us N20 trillion at worst, N12 TRILLION at best...or even more. You have food in the market to buy because in 1985, government discontinued subsides on some selected food items...because by that time falling oil prices meant that subsides were becoming difficult to maintain, and as a result there were queues for food. Mock APC...but subsidy removal was the best decision. The problem was too many Nigerian governments were scared of revolt to remove it. Even tinubu removing it was forced on him. We were at zero finances almost. (Tinubu is pro-subsidy, he was among the ojota crowd when GEJ was taking the sane decision to try to remove subsides back in the day). Keep subsidy, and our defcitis and debts would be so high, it would even be worse than the shege pro max you are anticipating. It would be shege pro quadrupule max |

Hezzyluv:'People no shout', but you are impoverishing people at a faster rate than they can keep up with. Their is a reason people in west protest over pennies increase in the price of bread. They understand economics. But you all, zero common sense. How do you come here and say people will cope? Sending your daughters to do prostitutions to make ends meet is that how you cope? Or receding from city to a more rural area where rents affordable is that how you cope? Or is it by jacking up the price of cars so high no civil servant below the level of director can afford a new car, is that the coping? You all will still learn one day. |

| Re: NNPC Hikes Petrol Price To ₦992/Litre In Lagos by nairalanda1(m): 1:45pm On Oct 13, 2025 |
Brendaniel:SImple...the difference paid between the cost of production (including transport costs) and the government set price For example, in 2011, we were bringing in fuel at N99 per liter (december ending)...and selling fuel at N65 per liter. Subsidy paid for the difference...between the landing cost and the cost of fuel as set by government. Subsidy also covered the costs of transport from ports to the end consumer... The problem with subsidy over the years is costs of production rise, and also because our naira is dependent largely on oil price, falls in oil price cause value of naira to fall...thus by 2015, landing cost was N132 and fuel was being sold at N87...which forced buhari to raise fuel to N145....to reduce subsidy costs. Ditto GEJ in 2012 when he raised fuel from N65 to N97....to reduce subsidy costs Keep in mind this has been going on since 1973. |
