Hundreds of Ekiti Residents Storm Abuja for Historic Protest Against Corruption and Bad Governance

As Yoruba Leaders Give Their Blessings, Ekiti Rises to Lead a New Dawn for Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria – October 13, 2025

In a powerful show of courage, unity, and rising hope for a better Nigeria, hundreds of determined residents of Ekiti State have departed en masse for Abuja ahead of the October 18th Protest set to erupt at Aso Rock this Saturday. The protest, a bold call to end decades of corruption, injustice, and failed leadership, has stirred a storm of emotion across the country, but nowhere more than in the heartland of Ekiti.

With chants of “Abo oro laa so fun omoluwabi…” (A word is enough for the wise), young men, women, elders, students, and artisans left their villages, towns, and cities—some with backpacks and placards, others with nothing but fierce determination in their eyes.

For them, this is not just another protest. This is a fight for survival, for dignity, for justice—this is a cry for the soul of Nigeria.

“We are tired. Our children graduate and become hawkers. Our mothers die in hospitals without light. The corrupt few are living in mansions while the rest of us can't even feed twice a day,” said Adebayo Akinyele, a 26-year-old graduate leading a youth delegation from Ado-Ekiti.

The movement has been galvanized by the resounding blessing of Yoruba traditional and political leaders, who—despite the tense atmosphere—have declared their full moral support for the protest, praising the boldness of Ekiti’s youth and vowing that history will remember them.

“Ekiti is the land of knowledge, the land of warriors, the land of honour. Go forth and raise your voices. The ancestors are with you,” proclaimed a revered monarch during a town hall in Ikere-Ekiti.

As Abuja braces for what may become one of the largest public demonstrations in recent Nigerian history, the momentum building from the southwest is electrifying. More convoys from other states are expected to follow suit, but Ekiti has taken the first and most symbolic step.

Saturday’s protest, organized under the banner of #EndBadGovernanceNow, is set to demand sweeping reforms, accountability for stolen public funds, transparency in leadership, and improved living conditions for everyday Nigerians.

The government has remained mostly silent in the face of growing agitation, but tension is rising. Security forces are already being mobilized across the Federal Capital Territory. The atmosphere is thick with anticipation—and resolve.

Back in Ekiti, even those left behind are not silent. Markets, churches, and mosques are echoing with prayers for the safety and success of the marchers. Social media is alight with hashtags like #EkitiLeads, #YorubaRise, and #NigeriaWillChange.

What started as whispers in small corners of frustration has grown into a thunderous movement, shaking the very pillars of power.

For those marching from Ekiti to Abuja, this is not just a journey of kilometers—it is a journey of generations, a movement born from pain and purpose.

And as the sun rises on October 18th, Nigeria will watch as its sons and daughters stand before Aso Rock—not with weapons, but with their voices, their courage, and an unshakable belief that a better Nigeria is not only possible—it is inevitable.

Ekiti should simply return to what they know how to do, agriculture. Forget airports and build massive mechanized farms. This will in turn encourage small, medium and large scale agro processing industries.

Lack of opportunities and hunger is the main problem.

Years ago,I accompanied my friend and his siblings to spend vacation in their town in Ekiti. It was one of the best holidays I had as a
kid.
We ate to our fill in foods and fruits, not a day goes by without eating pounded yam that sometimes got supported with fresh palm wine.
It was a different story nine years ago that I visited again.Though i saw more tarred roads than any other state that i had visited then, but I no longer see the widespread corn and yam barn, while the daily sound of pestle pounding that was part of my experience no longer exist. But I will forever cherish and hold on to the beautiful memories
