The Federal Ministry of Education revises national entry requirements for tertiary institutions, exempting Arts and Humanities students from the long-standing mathematics prerequisite.

In a landmark policy shift, the Federal Government has announced that Mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for Nigerian senior secondary school students in the Arts and Humanities seeking admission into universities, polytechnics, and other tertiary institutions.

The Federal Ministry of Education disclosed on Tuesday that the revised admission guidelines, approved by relevant education regulatory bodies, are designed to “remove unnecessary barriers to access” while ensuring academic standards remain intact.

For decades, admission seekers across all disciplines — including Arts, Humanities, Sciences, and Social Sciences — were required to possess at least five credits in their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), including English Language and Mathematics. This long-standing rule had often been cited as a major obstacle for students with strengths in language, literature, and the creative arts.

According to the new directive, contained in a statement by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Folasade Boriowo, Mathematics will now be compulsory only for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses, while Arts and Humanities applicants will only be required to present a credit in English Language and other relevant subjects.

“The revised National Guidelines for Entry Requirements into Nigerian Tertiary Institutions are designed to remove barriers while maintaining academic standards,” the statement read.

It further outlined the new framework for various institutions as follows:

Universities: Minimum of five (5) credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language, obtained in not more than two sittings. Mathematics remains mandatory only for Science, Technology, and Social Science courses.

Polytechnics (ND Level): Minimum of four (4) credit passes in relevant subjects, including English Language for non-science courses and Mathematics for science-related programs.

This is a very wrong policy to lower the standards of education in the country

Fg should also make sure English should no longer be mandatory for sciences

Two edged sword🤔 English language is compulsory for science students and biology or agric is compulsory for arts students.

No excuse for arts students now.

Should have been both Math and English for science and arts

There are students that are exceptionally good with A+ in mathematics and other sciences,but inability to pass English denied them opportunity to further their education.

Maths,physics and chemistry are universal languages.

You would understand if you were to be in science class with these individuals in secondary school.
They have basic understanding of English language enough to fully absorb knowledge of definitions,laws and formulas.Try as hard as they could,credit in English remains unachievable
