Nigeria takes over G-24 leadership, promises global economic reforms

By Adetutu Sobowale

Nigeria has assumed the chairmanship of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four.

The federal government has pledged to amplify the voices of developing nations and drive inclusive global economic reforms when it formally takes office on November 1, 2025.

This was disclosed in a series of posts by the Central Bank of Nigeria on its official X handle on Wednesday.

The G-24 which was formed in 1971, brings together developing nations to forge common positions on global monetary policy and development financing, ensuring their collective voice is heard in international economic decision-making.

The CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, on behalf of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening the voice of the G-24 as a catalyst for inclusive dialogue and reform.

Cardoso stated, “Our focus will be on sustaining momentum in areas that matter most to our members. We look forward to working with members to advance our shared mission of inclusive growth, equity, and global stability.

“We are determined to ensure that the G-24 continues to be a formidable platform for representing the common interests of emerging and developing economies.”

Recall, in 2024, the federal government called for increased investments and trading partnerships from member countries of the G-24.

Edun had highlighted Nigeria’s strong potential to attract foreign investment across key sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, and oil and gas.

He further pointed out that Nigeria possesses one of the largest expanses of arable land in the world, second only to Brazil, underscoring the nation’s potential to shift from being a food importer to a leading global food exporter.

Jokers.

Have they reformed the Nigerian economy yet?

How can APC, which has been put more people into poverty bring reform to other countries?

You can never give what you don't have.

Good move on paper. Hopefully, it won’t just be another title without impact. If Cardoso and Edun can actually use this platform to push reforms that attract real investments and improve trade terms, Nigeria and Africa as a whole could benefit massively.

Nigeria don collect G-24 chairmanship, nice one. Now make dem no go use the chair do photo ops only. We need real economic progress, not more grammar from Abuja. 😅

G-24 leadership is now a benchmark for aggregating the highest number of poor people in the world.

G24 leadership is also an achievement and benchmark for aggregating the sixth most devalued currency in Africa and 11th in the world.

Anybody who bought a car for N1.8m in 2023 before this PBAT and now buys same car for N11m should celebrate this news ?

Median Housing rent has moved from N400k for 2 bedroom apartment in Middle/Low Income Urban areas to N1.2m per annum in Lagos State.

PMS as at today is at N925 per liter and filling 20 liters is N20k for a two day trip.

God keep us till 2027.

Nigeria has a sitting minister of state of Finance, but CBN governor is the person to deputize for the absent minister of finance.
Just goes to show how the CBN that is meant to be independent is being run like a ministry under Tinubu control.
This country is finished!😒

Cardoso and Edun are the same Lagos boys who helped Tinubu squeeze IGR out of the people since 1999 to make the state budget N3.4 trillion from N42 billion without any real change in governance outcomes like water supply. Ordinary water supply o.

What do you think is happening to the money huh

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources in Lagos State, Mahmood Adegbite, has said that people drilling borehole in the Lekki axis of the state is probably drinking ‘’shit water.”

While speaking at a stakeholders meeting in the state recently, Adegbite noted that contaminated boreholes in Lekki pose health risk and added that treatment of waste water would eradicate any form of disease that may arise from it.

He said, “On waste water treatment, I will say that everyone digging borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water.’

We are in perilous times. One can't help but wonder when these leaders would be patriotic and people centered. The real people who have a burning desire to effect a change and see Nigeria work are rarely ever given a chance save for the miracle of Abians in person of H.E. Alex Otti and a handful of others.
