Bayelsa Deputy Gov, Dickson Reject Diri’s Defection To APC by amoreobansu(op): 11:20pm On Oct 15, 2025
The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and the Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, have rejected the defection of Governor Douye Diri to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The duo, alongside other stalwarts of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, maintained that the party remains the biggest opposition force in the country and is still strong enough in the oil-rich state to make defection unnecessary.

Diri, who announced his resignation from PDP through his spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, did not provide details or reasons for his defection.

Allies of the two PDP leaders, who spoke to journalists in separate interviews, said there was no justification for any PDP leader or member to leave the party that had brought them political prominence.

“The Deputy Governor, Ewhrudjakpo, and one of our leaders, Seriake Dickson, including other former lawmakers in our party, are still with the PDP — we’re going nowhere,” one of the sources told DAILY POST in a telephone interview.

Another source disclosed that the deputy governor refused to attend the State Executive Council meeting where Diri announced his resignation from the PDP, although he has not yet declared his next political move.

He said, “Earlier this morning, Diri presided over the SEC meeting, but the deputy governor refused to attend. He didn’t attend because he’s not defecting alongside the governor.”

However, it was gathered that members of the State House of Assembly who resigned from the PDP alongside Diri are planning to initiate impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor for refusing to defect with the governor.

Sources revealed that the lawmakers intend to describe Ewhrudjakpo’s refusal to defect as gross misconduct and an impeachable offence, adding that nothing would prevent them from proceeding with impeachment at their next sitting.

“We expect that the State Assembly will victimise him for his choice. If he’s victimised for remaining in the PDP, he will have no choice but to do the needful,” the source added.

Diri and Ewhrudjakpo were elected on a joint PDP ticket in 2019 and assumed office in 2020. They were re-elected under the same platform in 2023.

Ewhrudjakpo, a lawyer and seasoned politician, served as the senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District between 2019 and 2020 in the 9th National Assembly. He has also held various leadership positions, including Chairman of the Nigerian International Coastal Border Platform, which focuses on harmonising maritime laws and combating piracy and other maritime-related crimes.

Meanwhile, Senator Seriake Dickson has condemned the wave of defections into the ruling APC.

Speaking with reporters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja after plenary on Wednesday, Dickson reaffirmed his commitment to PDP, saying that the governors defecting were making a mockery of democracy.

Reacting to Diri’s defection, Dickson said, “I am where I have always been. I don’t believe Nigeria should become a one-party state. As a democrat, I understand the ups and downs of the process, but I remain constant and steadfast in the PDP.

“It’s sad. Instead of fixing the problems, they let the crisis fester and now they are bailing out. It makes Nigeria look small, ridicules our democracy, and endangers multiparty politics. What we are witnessing is political class suicide.

“To his credit, he consulted me, but I didn’t see any compelling reason to defect. I’m still standing where I have always stood — with the PDP, the party that gave my people the opportunity to produce a Vice President, an Acting President, and a President of the Federal Republic. The APC cannot offer that.

“If we fail to save the PDP, then we will decide collectively on the next step, but it certainly should not be joining the APC. A democracy without opposition becomes a dictatorship.”

In so much that the PDP is now its old self as a result of Atiku Abubakar ambition and Nyesom Wike egocentric quest that has torn it apart, there is no gainsaying the poaching of its governors by cajoling or coercion of the APC have not helped its course too.

Was it Atiku’s ambition that has also destroyed the Labour party? You are watching what is clearly a destruction of the political parties of the first and second runner-up in the last election by the government using state apparatus, and you choose to call it what it's not. There was nothing Peter Obi nor Atiku could have done to stop what is currently happening. We have an emerging dictator determined to become the next Paul Biya, and you had better call it what it is. Atiku merely contested an election, and that is his democratic right.

This is not a good season for you, Atiku and Elrufai. How are you coping since this week. You didn't show up in any of the defection threads yesterday. I hope you are okay mentally at the moment.

Defection without momentum nor jubilation from the electorates that really matter is nothing to celebrate unless you're banking on writing results. NgeneUkwenu, I still insist that the event that would determine the trajectory of the 2027 election has not occurred and it is not the defections. What you saw are the defections, now brace up for the implosion or sabotage by the erstwhile APC loyalists whom have seen the party structure snatched from their hands and handed over to strangers because of the sole ambition of one man who only cares about his own re-election.

But they are just governors with one vote each? What changed today? Why the lamentation? Have we not agreed that 2027 is APC "from Zimbabwe" vs Nigerians?

Yes. Tell Tinubu to conduct a free and fair election and the theory that the governors and defectors have one vote each will be proved. We are already seeing Okpebholo "forcefully" telling his own Kitchen cabinet to wear the Jagaban cap or get sacked. They obviously still don't key into the vision. You can't buy love neither can you copy respect. Tinubu remains unpopular. The governors can still win their elections under APC but fail to deliver Tinubu. We saw that happen in several APC states including Lagos in 2023. Destroying all opposition parties in order to run unopposed is not how one can emerge a president in a country like Nigeria.

It's quite funny how Nigeria is gradually turning into a one party nation n this one party system Tinubu is pursuing is not good for democracy. In this present day we have rubber stamps house of senate n rep n they want to add all the state to Apc. It's finish.

Until is enshrined in the constitution of political parties that whoever defects as an elected official under it's party will loose seats upon defection, it will continue happening

You’re not being truthful if you think Atiku and Wike didn’t lay the groundwork for what is happening in the PDP today with their singleminded attitude and ambitions. The gravest mistake of the PDP was to jettison their zoning arrangements in the last primaries, thereby alienating their most loyal supporters and voting bloc, the Southeast… Atiku and Wike collectively decided to sacrifice the future of the party on the alters of their political agenda. That travesty is still hurting and hunting the PDP.
