When the Muslims took Alia (Jerusalem) from the Greeks during Umar reign as Khalif, the Christians offered their Church to him for his Prayers, he turned it down and said no Muslims should take their Church away from him.

So, what the Vatican did here is in accordance to the Prophetic tradition.
