Jubril A. Gawat @Mr_JAGs

FLASH: The Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor @jidesanwoolu is set to launch the OMI EKO Project, tomorrow October 17, 2025.

The project is a major initiative aimed at improving water transportation across Lagos State, which is being implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) @talktolaswa and supported through €410 million in funding under the Global Gateway Initiative, backed by the European Union, the French Development Agency, and the European Investment Bank.

The OMI EKO project will introduce:

New fleet of 78 high-capacity electric ferries (between 50-200 passenger capacity)

Modern terminals & floating jetties (upgrade + new ones).

Dredging & channel works to open / stabilise routes (~140 km; 15 routes).

Digital ticketing & smart terminals for faster boarding.

Stronger safety, regulation & capacity building with LASWA oversight.

This project will be done in phases over the next 6 years.

Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) - Overall transport regulator.

Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL), Primero - BRT operators.

LagFerry - Ferry Operator.

Lagos Railway Corporation - railway operator.

This Omi Eko project is being done in conjunction with the European Union, so here's a European Union official to talk about how the project will transform water transportation in Lagos.

LASG should start considering a change from Lagos to Eko State.. maybe the olojuko.koros will face their landlocked enclave when we effect a name change.
Kudos on the 'Omi Eko' initiative.

These ferries should be seen in all streets of Lagos especially those areas that normally get flooded when it rains

That's within the state house of assembly capacity no need for federal approval, A similar thing happened in Osun state (State of Osun).

Actually it goes beyond the State House of Assembly for one reason. The names of states are listed in the constitution and any name change must come with a constitutional ammendment. That's why the court voided the Osun name change.

Very true.. it happened in Osun, it can and must happen in Lagos.
LSHA is also part of LASG, they are the legislative arm.
We must set clear boundaries to preserve Yoruba heritage and culture of Lagos.

The federal government really did the SE bad. They deliberately prevented the Atlantic Ocean from passing through the SE, so that developments like these will never happen there. For them to see such, they have to travel several kilometers to an “enemy region” to witness it.
One Nigeria my foot!

This was done by Fashola in 2009 and repackaged by Sanwo Olu in 2020 and now again in 2024

First by Fashola : https://www.nairaland.com/277902/inside-ferry-fashola-done-it

Then 2020 by Sanwo olu:
https://guardian.ng/sunday-magazine/1000-days-after-re-launch-of-lagos-ferrys-operations/

And now, it's been repackaged for a third time, this time for 410 million EUROS!!!!
https://thenationonlineng.net/sanwo-olu-launches-410m-euro-project-to-ease-gridlock/

For context, Poland are building a train system covering a large part of the country for 70million euros.!!! Nigerian politics na cruise abeg

Very good idea. Then after two years of usage, they will be sent to Anambra state as Tokunbo.

Perhaps, they need it more there than even Bayelsa.
