The funny guy up there does not know that LagFerry has been operating for years and he does not know the difference between LagFerry and this project.

Everything you need to know about LagFerry

Hint: the difference is in the size of the ferries and the source of energy.

Baba, you don't know anything. I know about this more than you and I can tell you the whole story.

Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola was completely against any state run ferry service. I know someone that was in the Navy (he's a Lagosian) and served in a committee that examined the use of the waterways for transport.

During his presentation he had a slide that discussed government ownef ferry service. As soon as Fashola saw it he shouted, "Who is that man"!

There was no LagFerry when Fashola was governor. Fashola favoured encouraging private entities like Tarzan Ferries, Texas Ferry Connection, etc to provide ferry service.

His plan was that government would act as guarantor while the private companies would buy fiberglass boats from Australia. His main focus was on building modern jetties.

Ambode came and did things differently. He set up LagFerry and bought a few ferries for their operation. He also tried to modernise the jetties.

Sanwo-Olu came and added catamarans to the LagFerry fleet.

However, some people have criticised the service because they say that the boats are too small. They say that they want boats that can carry over 100 passengers.

Also government is spending a lot of money on diesel for the boats.

This project is designed to bring in bigger boats, to dredge the waterways to accomodate the boats and to get electric boats (so that they can be charged from solar charging stations).

What you are saying is just like saying that because Jakande launched Baba Kekere Ferries in the early 1980s and Babangida launched NIWA ferries in the mid-1980s, they are all the same with this Omi Eko that will be launched today, since it's all in the same Lagos.

But anyway, I don't expect that the explanation will mean anything to you.

Clownish thoughts..Atlantic Ocean passes through countries as an act of God and not through human enhancements. You can only try by dredging but that's limited. Blame Yahweh and not the federal government....always blaming and blaming.....

PDPdestroyer:
The federal government really did the SE bad. They deliberately prevented the Atlantic Ocean from passing through the SE, so that developments like these will never happen there. For them to see such, they have to travel several kilometers to an “enemy region” to witness it.

In fact, Sanwo-olu is arranging with Tinubu so that Tinubu will make a canal from anambra to lagos such that when it floods anambra people can be transported through the ferries to lagos to develop it. cool

Actually it goes beyond the State House of Assembly for one reason. The names of states are listed in the constitution and any name change must come with a constitutional ammendment. That's why the court voided the Osun name change.
Thanks for this

It's so interesting reading your succinct facts of the whole evolution of modern water transportation in Lagos.

Don't always bother yourself with people that hardly knows what is happening at their backyard other than going to quickly open shop in the morning and close shop at night.....some people especially from other regions can't understand some development in Lagos cos they can't see it, can't recognize development since they have limited their focus to discord and disgruntlement....

This project is being done in conjunction with the European Union, so here's a European Union official to talk about how the project will transform water transportation in Lagos.

A city with a massive IGR and hefty allocation from the federation federation purse yet, residents drink water from cellophane sachets. What are you governing when you can't provide your inhabitants with pipe borne water?

They can't even set up a central sewage flow system where you just connect your sewage and other effluent to the general underground pipes. In the 21st century, they are still packing faeces all over place on trucks. Sickening!

FLASH: The Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor @jidesanwoolu is set to launch the OMI EKO Project, tomorrow October 17, 2025.

The project is a major initiative aimed at improving water transportation across Lagos State, which is being implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) @talktolaswa and supported through €410 million in funding under the Global Gateway Initiative, backed by the European Union, the French Development Agency, and the European Investment Bank.

The OMI EKO project will introduce:

New fleet of 78 high-capacity electric ferries (between 50-200 passenger capacity)

Modern terminals & floating jetties (upgrade + new ones).

Dredging & channel works to open / stabilise routes (~140 km; 15 routes).

Digital ticketing & smart terminals for faster boarding.

Stronger safety, regulation & capacity building with LASWA oversight.

This project will be done in phases over the next 6 years.

Those attached images are catamarans. Very swift for water transportation.
