No, it is not. It is Airtel Outdoor Unit.

MTN has had a Fibre broadband service for quite a while now but is now quickly expanding its coverage. I looked into it at the start of the year, and was happy to see them finally begin rollout in my estate months ago.

Here's a rundown of all you need to know about the service.

This post is not sponsored and is just my own personal experience.

1. Installation begins in my area around April 2025. Poles are installed, with the Fibre device mounted on poles.

2. After access point installation, I reach out to MTN customer service about joining the program. Also even go to the nearest MTN office to inquire. They are unhelpful and provide no information on when the service will become active in my locale.

3. I see them installing the poles around the area in May and take the contact of a salesman. We keep in touch and he promises to let me know when service begins.

4. In early June he tells me service has begun. I verify from a friend at the MTN office. I pay for it in late June. 25k. NIMC servers go down nationwide. All forms of registrations are put on hold as a result and I'm unable to have a profile created. Not MTN's fault.

5. NIMC servers are fixed in late July. On July 30th I receive my FN ID. The very next morning, Thursday July 31st, I get a call for installation. Installation is done but installation is done wrongly and the inept technician lacks the tools to troubleshoot.

6. Monday August 4 I receive a call from MTN for activation. But activation cannot be done because installation was done incorrectly. Issue is escalated. On Tuesday morning I'm visited by four MTN engineers who come to troubleshoot. They figure out what the issue is and team lead asks the installer to come and fix it.

7. Wednesday afternoon my installation is fixed. I call for activation and by ~7pm the service is active.

Why do I outline the events? To give an idea of how MTN's customer service is. I was impressed. The only big issues I faced were:

- NIMC servers
- Bad installation initially (MTN does not provide their own installers, and this is actually outsourced)

Now for the important details.

1. MTN's FibreX is a fiber connection. A cable goes from the access point on a pole in your street, into your house. That, of course, means it's susceptible to more infrastructural issues. Poles may fall due to wind or anything, and access points may fail like all electronics eventually do. On the flip side, it's also a more stable service since it's not directly tied to signal reception I believe.

2. Installation is free. I only paid 25k for the 50mbps plan.

3. Availability is currently limited. As at the time of posting this on August 8 2025, MTN's FibreX is only available in 14 states. Abuja, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and Rivers. They are currently expanding, though. Two months ago it was only available in six states. It's also only available in select areas in these states. Typically the most high-brow areas where they're likely to have the most customers for a service like this.

4. You can confirm availability in your area using the MTN app. Just open FibreX, select new customer and plan you want, and all available locations are listed. It's not always up to date, though. My street hasn't been listed yet, for example.

5. There are currently five plans, defined by bandwidth.

20mbps - 15k monthly
50mbps - 25k monthly
100mbps - 50k monthly
150mbps - 60k monthly
300mbps - 100k monthly

And on to more technical information.

1. My Fibre X router is a ZTE F670L. It's not a particularly great router by most accounts, but that can be expected considering the fact that it's free. It also gets the job done.

2. The ZTE F670L lacks any sort of battery or backup power. And runs off a 12v 1A power supply. Ideally you need a steady power supply, or a power bank with a 12v output. Thankfully I have one from an older MTN router I bought. You can theoretically also buy a USB to 12v barrel connector cable and use with a regular power bank, assuming the power bank supports 12v output anyway.

3. The router interface is solid. Has all the necessary features including security controls, firewall and DNS settings with filters and the rest. There is no data usage page, however, but that's not really necessary seeing as FibreX is unlimited. Regrettably, my router does not pair with any of the ZTElink apps. I'm not sure if that's down to the router itself or modifications by MTN. Either way, you're stuck with just the standard web interface.

And on to speed
.

I'm on the 50mbps plan and Ookla's speed tests generally always give a dl of 47-55mbps, and ul of ~25mbps. Ergo, just as advertised. Idle ping is typically under 30ms.

I've not had my speeds drop at all, even in peak usage periods around 5-9pm. I should point out, though, that I'm probably one of the few people on the service in my area at the moment. Not sure if that's a factor.

So far I've been able to stream ~8GB 4K movie files off my RD service without any buffering. I'm happy with it. It's a significant upgrade on Airtel's 30k monthly 20mbps unlimited plan which I was using prior. Speed tests usually start off with dl speeds of up to ~150mbps before dropping to 50mbps as capped by my plan, so I believe anything up to the 60k for 150mbps plan should be fine. I'm not sure it can deliver 300mbps, though.

As for range, I've had no issues anywhere in my reasonably large apartment even on the 5GHz network.

Pictures attached below.

The highlighted on the screenshot is for those who claim MTN FibreX is not susceptible to vandalism. This is coming from the Chief Broadband Officer of MTN himself.

FibreX doesn't just appear in your estate. There are miles-long laid cables that lead to your estate, eventually connected to poles in your estate.

True. The head of NCC was recently praising ONSA for arresting/disbanding some cartel destroying Fibre lines.

O boy this is bloody no cap.
Been using it now for three months and it's the smoothest network device I've ever used.
I used Airtel router for over a year before the mtn broadband and the broadband is not only cheaper, but more stable.
Yes there has been downtimes about two or three times which normally do not take time.
Overall, I give it 97%.
25k monthly and I even connect my neighbour upstairs join.
Bro, I am in Awka too. How did you go about it and do you know if it's available at Commissioner Quarters?

Fastest way is to fill the FibreX form on their website. After which an agent should contact you.

Or just register and make payment for the subscription on their website, since you are certain it is available in your location. Once you have paid for subscription an agent will contact you for installation.

2. Speed test on an iPhone 15.
3. MTN FibreX ZTE F670l router with power bank attached

Feel free to ask any questions.
How long does the power Bank last and the price? Thanks

Router did not come with a power bank. I'm using a power bank that came with an older router I have, and at this point (after about a year of use) it no longer lasts up to an hour.

What you should do is buy a 5v to 12v converter cable and use it with a regular power bank.

Saw them laying the fibre cables on my street, I just wonder how long it’ll take them to test and go live.

Went on their website only to see that they’ve completely removed the available locations around me and replaced it with streets in Lagos , I guess they’re working on updates.

Can anyone confirm that they have been monitoring their data usage and have used up to 1TB, yet no further speed cap?

My router doesn't have a data usage counter unfortunately but I'm pretty sure I've used up to 1TB this month, since I've downloaded like a dozen PS4/PS5 games of recent.

Fantastic. It may be truly unlimited at 50Mbps, or has a higher usage threshold before further speed cap.

Hello, our device is the same as yours. It was installed on Monday at around 12noon and the call for activation came in on Tuesday 2pm. Up till now, it hasn't been activated. We called the lady back this morning and she said she's on it.

I want to even know it the installation was done right. 3 green lights are on. The power light, PON (this one has been flashing since it was installed) and the WLAN ( this one flashes a few times and then stops). What could be the issue?

Update: the three lights are still on but not blinking anymore. Well, except for the WLAN light which still blinks occasionally and stops.

Your router should be working now since the pon light is stable

The PON light was stable for over an hour at least and still no internet. PHCN has taken the light now so we don't know if it would have been working now.

I just hope that the subscription has not started counting. Is the WLAN light supposed to be blinking or stable when it's working?

The wlan light blinks when you are connected to the router. Subscription starts counting as soon as the router starts working

Ok. Thanks! They called sometime yesterday that we should send the serial number on the device and that the issue will be escalated to Lagos.

We just got a text this morning that the activation was successful and that it will expire on the 21th of next month. Meanwhile, it's still not working 🤣🤣 Wahala.

This is not good, start by calling 217 to resolve or you can call the person that called you for activation
