US Congressman Riley Moore Insists On Nigeria Re-Designated As ‘Country of Particular Concern’ Over Killings In Christian Communities

United States Congressman, Riley Moore, has again called for Nigeria to be re-designated as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) following what he described as the alarming persecution and mass killings of Christians in Africa’s most populous nation.

Speaking during an interview with Rachel Campos-Duffy on Fox & Friends, the lawmaker said the level of religious violence in Nigeria had reached catastrophic levels, urging the U.S. government to take immediate action.

“A real tragedy is taking place in Nigeria. Christians are being persecuted and martyred for their faith,” Moore said.

“That is why I wrote a letter urging Senator Marco Rubio and the U.S. State Department to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern. We must defend our brothers and sisters in Christ.”

Campos-Duffy, citing verified reports, revealed that over 18,000 churches have been burned down in Nigeria since 2009, while more than 50,000 Christians have been killed and 5 million displaced.

She added that 7,000 Christians have already been killed in 2025 alone, making Nigeria one of the most dangerous countries in the world for Christians.

Moore explained that the CPC designation would have real policy consequences, including the suspension of arms sales and security assistance to Nigeria.

“That means limiting security assistance, including arms sales, training, and military cooperation,” he said.

“These programs were meant to help Nigeria eliminate Boko Haram, but what we’ve seen instead are continued massacres by Boko Haram, ISIS-West Africa (ISWAP), and Fulani militants targeting Christian communities.”

He also noted that Senator Ted Cruz had introduced a similar appeal urging the U.S. government to restore the designation.

“President Trump had placed Nigeria on that list. President Biden later removed it,” Moore said. “What we’re asking now is for that designation to be reinstated, because when it was in place, it helped reduce the killings of Christians.”

Campos-Duffy added that American taxpayers should not be complicit in funding governments that fail to protect their citizens.

“If a government is not protecting Christians, then the United States should not be giving them any money, weapons, or training,” she said. “Please, Congressman, stay on this issue. You’ve been such a strong and courageous voice.”

Moore thanked her and vowed to continue pushing for bipartisan action on Capitol Hill, saying, “God bless you, Rachel.”

Nigeria has faced mounting international criticism for its inability to curb recurring attacks by Islamist insurgents and armed herdsmen in the country’s Middle Belt and North-East regions. Rights groups, including Amnesty International and Open Doors International, have repeatedly described the killings as systematic and targeted violence against Christians, though Nigerian authorities continue to frame the crisis as one rooted in land disputes, terrorism, and economic hardship — not religion.

CAN had expressed deep concern over the persistent violence and insecurity affecting Christians in several parts of the country, especially in the North.

A prominent U.S. religious freedom advocate, Sean Nelson, has reacted to a recent press release by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), commending the body for clarifying its position on the persecution of Christians and acknowledging the pain suffered by victims of religiously motivated violence across the country.

Nelson, who serves as Legal Counsel for Global Religious Freedom with ADF International, said he was pleased that CAN had “heard the outcry” of Nigerian Christians, many of whom have repeatedly decried being targeted in killings and attacks by terrorists, bandits, and other violent groups.

“I’m glad to see this clarification from the Christian Association of Nigeria. CAN has formerly spoken out against persecution of Christians, so this is good. And it’s good that they heard the outcry from Christians going through this pain,” Nelson wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

He added that despite Nigeria’s worsening insecurity affecting both Christians and Muslims, there is “significant deliberate targeting of Christians” across several regions, particularly in the North and Middle Belt.

“I think it’s simply undeniable that there are mass, disproportionate, and targeted atrocities being committed against Christians in Nigeria,” Nelson said. “Insecurity affects everyone, but there is clearly significant deliberate targeting of Christians.”

On Wednesday, CAN expressed deep concern over the persistent violence and insecurity affecting Christians in several parts of the country, especially in the North.

The group said many communities have suffered “severe attacks, loss of life, and destruction of places of worship.”

In a press release issued on Wednesday and made available to SaharaReporters, CAN said the scale of killings and displacement facing Christians had reached alarming proportions and demanded urgent, transparent action from the government and security agencies.

The statement, titled “Christian Genocide — CAN Clarifies Position,” and signed by its National President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, condemned the continuous targeting of Christian communities and the slow response of authorities.

“CAN affirms, without hesitation, that many Christian communities in parts of Nigeria, especially in the North, have suffered severe attacks, loss of life, and the destruction of places of worship,” the statement read.

“These realities are painful reminders of the urgent need for government and security agencies to act decisively to protect every citizen, regardless of region.”

According to the statement, the association has, over the years, engaged in several advocacy efforts to draw both national and international attention to what it described as the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

“The Association has established mechanisms for recording incidents of religiously motivated killings, engaged with international partners, written to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and hosted global Christian organisations such as the World Evangelical Alliance and the Lausanne Movement,” CAN said.

Despite these efforts, the body lamented that the cries for justice are “too often met with delay or denial,” warning that the failure to protect vulnerable Christian communities risks further eroding public trust and national unity.

CAN called for an immediate end to what it described as years of impunity enjoyed by perpetrators of religiously motivated violence.

“We therefore renew our call on government and security agencies to take urgent, transparent, and equitable action to end the killings, safeguard vulnerable Christian communities from displacement, and ensure that perpetrators face the full weight of the law,” the statement continued.

“The pain of Christian families torn apart by violence must never be treated as mere statistics.”

‘Reno Omokri Lied’: American Fact-Finder, Mike Arnold, Says Nigeria Is Facing ‘Calculated Genocide Against Christians’

An American fact-finder and former mayor of Blanco, Texas, Mike Arnold, has dismissed reports circulated by former presidential aide Reno Omokri and his associates claiming that he (Arnold) “debunked” allegations of genocide against Christians in Nigeria.

Arnold described Omokri as a “pathological liar” attempting to distort facts and whitewash atrocities.

Omokri, a former media aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, had earlier challenged members of the United States Congress to identify Nigerians allegedly sponsoring terror attacks that have led to claims of genocide against Christians.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, also attended by Arnold, founder of Africa Arise International, Omokri insisted that the violent incidents in Nigeria did not amount to genocide.

“Saying there’s a genocide in Nigeria is like saying that in the United States, because 30,000 people, mostly black, are murdered every year, there’s a genocide against black Americans,” Omokri argued.

“That’s the same as claiming genocide against Christians here. It’s not true. But if you think it is, name names. Don’t just make baseless accusations.”

Omokri maintained that there was no credible evidence of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, adding that even Open Doors International, a global Christian persecution monitor, had not classified the situation as such.

“Open Doors themselves haven’t said there’s a genocide in Nigeria. They never used that word,” he said.

“And if you look at the Global Terror Index, Nigeria has actually improved, down from the third most terrorised country to around number eight.”

He added that while impunity in Nigeria remained a concern, it was being gradually addressed through military and police reforms.

“Impunity is ending,” Omokri claimed. “We can’t be everywhere at once, but the process is underway.”

However, in an X post on Wednesday, Arnold sharply refuted Omokri’s claims, describing them as false and malicious.

“Sleazy Omokri, a pathological liar, will go down in history as the Joseph Goebbels of the Nigerian Christian Genocide,” Arnold declared.

“His paid "reporters" are saying that I "debunked" claims of genocide.”

Arnold, who led a U.S. delegation on a fact-finding mission to Nigeria, said his team had visited multiple states, met both Christian and Muslim leaders, and toured several internally displaced persons (IDP) camps as part of an independent investigation into widespread violence.

“My only allegiance is to the truth and getting it out. I tagged those I thought would be most likely to trumpet what I was saying. I honestly don’t know much about Nigerian politics. Those were just the big influencers that kicked up on my feed,” he wrote on X.

“I came here with one instruction: to meet key people and tell the truth,” Arnold said during the press conference. “The truth is not comfortable, but it’s what remains when propaganda fails.”

The delegation, which included Professor Khalid Abubakar, Secretary-General of Jamaat al-Nasir al-Islam, and U.S. filmmaker Jeff Gibbs, briefed American policymakers, including Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Chip Roy, before departing for Nigeria.

Arnold clarified that, although Omokri had invited him, he had no financial or political ties to either Omokri or the Nigerian government.

“Reno Omokri called me while on a call with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser,” he explained. “But I am not his agent. I’ve not received, requested, or been offered a single kobo. I am here independently.”

Reading from a prepared statement titled “Statement on Widespread Violence and Displacement in Nigeria,” Arnold said his findings, backed by diplomats, human rights lawyers, and field investigators, documented a decade-long campaign of targeted violence.

He traced Nigeria’s descent into mass displacement to the rise of Boko Haram in 2011, noting that the country had gone from near-zero displacement to more than four million internally displaced persons in just over ten years.

According to Arnold, the pattern is consistent.

He attributed the ongoing violence to three intertwined drivers: radical Islamist conquest, illicit ‘blood mineral’ mining, and politically motivated demographic re-engineering.

“The term farmer herder clashes is, in many instances today, is cynical doublespeak. Weaponizing historical land disputes to mask jihadist conquest. For centuries, herders and farmers co-existed with rare, very rarely lethal disputes,” he said.

“Now villages are systematically razed, churches leveled, and tens of thousands are dead. This is a systematic terror and not grazing conflicts. A lie akin to calling Bosnia's ethnic cleansing a neighborhood spat.”

Citing Article II of the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Arnold asserted that Nigeria’s situation meets the international legal threshold for genocide.

According to him, after five years of investigation, he could say, “The campaign of violence and displacement in northern and middle belt Nigeria does indeed constitute a calculated current and long-running genocide against Christian communities and other religious minorities without any reasonable doubt. To continue to deny this is to be complicit with these atrocities.”

Arnold warned that continued denial of the atrocities only emboldens perpetrators.

“To continue to deny this is to be complicit with these atrocities,” he said. “I say this not in anger, but in truth and grief. My stated assignment from my host was to speak the truth and I have done that to the best of my ability. I believe Nigeria has a bright future.”

“I believe in Christian Muslim harmony. I believe good people of every tribe and faith and party must stand against this evil, but first we must name it. Here I stand,” he added.

He concluded that his team’s report would be submitted to U.S. policymakers and international human rights organisations upon return.

“Here I stand. I can do no other. So help me God,” Arnold said.

A) Resource Competition

For centuries, the Fulani have been nomadic pastoralists, journeying with their cattle across grazing routes in search of water and fresh pasture.
In contrast, the indigenous communities of the Middle Belt and southern regions are sedentary farmers, whose survival depends on fixed farmlands and planted boundaries.

Thus began a tension as old as time:

The herder’s cattle demand open grassland.

The farmer’s livelihood depends on fenced crops.

When cows stray into cultivated lands, tempers flare, and conflict ignites.
This is not a dispute born in 2009, nor even in the age of independence - it is a centuries-old struggle between mobility and settlement, between the moving herd and the rooted seed.

B) Colonial Policies and Land Ownership Conflicts

During the British colonial era (1900–1960), policies were crafted that deepened the rift.
While the colonial government recognized certain grazing routes for pastoralists, it failed to legalize them. Meanwhile, land tenure systems favoured farmers, granting ownership through customary law.

The result was a dangerous imbalance: herders had “access” but no “rights.”
They could pass through the land but never claim it - a ticking time bomb that has now exploded across generations.

Thus, the seed of discord was sown long before Nigeria’s independence - and today we harvest its bitter fruit.

C) Population Pressure and Climate Change

At independence in 1960, Nigeria’s population stood at about 45 million.
Today, we are over 220 million strong - a fivefold increase. More mouths to feed means more farms to cultivate, and more farms mean less open land to graze.

As if nature itself conspired in the crisis, climate change began to choke the North.
Lake Chad receded, grazing belts withered, and the Sahara crept southward, driving desperate herders into already crowded agricultural zones.

The result? A moving frontier of conflict, especially across Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, and Southern Kaduna - regions now etched in memory by tragedies like Agatu, Nimbo, Southern Kaduna, and Wukari.

Killing of Nigerians. If farmers, it's most likely by herders. Their story is not one of holy war, but of ancient friction, colonial negligence, and modern desperation.

A) Resource Competition

For centuries, the Fulani have been nomadic pastoralists, journeying with their cattle across grazing routes in search of water and fresh pasture.
In contrast, the indigenous communities of the Middle Belt and southern regions are sedentary farmers, whose survival depends on fixed farmlands and planted boundaries.

Thus began a tension as old as time:

The herder’s cattle demand open grassland.

The farmer’s livelihood depends on fenced crops.

When cows stray into cultivated lands, tempers flare, and conflict ignites.
This is not a dispute born in 2009, nor even in the age of independence - it is a centuries-old struggle between mobility and settlement, between the moving herd and the rooted seed.

B) Colonial Policies and Land Ownership Conflicts

During the British colonial era (1900–1960), policies were crafted that deepened the rift.
While the colonial government recognized certain grazing routes for pastoralists, it failed to legalize them. Meanwhile, land tenure systems favoured farmers, granting ownership through customary law.

The result was a dangerous imbalance: herders had “access” but no “rights.”
They could pass through the land but never claim it - a ticking time bomb that has now exploded across generations.

Thus, the seed of discord was sown long before Nigeria’s independence - and today we harvest its bitter fruit.

C) Population Pressure and Climate Change

At independence in 1960, Nigeria’s population stood at about 45 million.
Today, we are over 220 million strong - a fivefold increase. More mouths to feed means more farms to cultivate, and more farms mean less open land to graze.

As if nature itself conspired in the crisis, climate change began to choke the North.
Lake Chad receded, grazing belts withered, and the Sahara crept southward, driving desperate herders into already crowded agricultural zones.

The result? A moving frontier of conflict, especially across Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, and Southern Kaduna - regions now etched in memory by tragedies like Agatu, Nimbo, Southern Kaduna, and Wukari.

Yet, beneath the smoke and blood, the motive remains economic, not religious.

South African Journalist Condemns Al Jazeera Article, Says ‘Christian Genocide’ In Nigeria Driven By Islamist Ideology

The article, written by Gimba Kakanda, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Research and Analytics, was titled “No, Bill Maher, there is no ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria.”

South African-born investigative journalist and former CBS News correspondent, Lara Logan, has publicly criticised Qatar-based global news network Al Jazeera for what she called a deliberate misrepresentation of the ongoing Christian genocide in Nigeria, accusing the network of downplaying ideological extremism and blaming climate change instead.

Logan made the remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter) while reacting to an opinion article published by Al Jazeera on October 2, 2025.

The article, written by Gimba Kakanda, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Research and Analytics, was titled “No, Bill Maher, there is no ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria.”

In the piece, Kakanda dismissed claims of systematic killings of Christians as “foreign propaganda” and said such narratives “ignore the complexities” of Nigeria’s internal conflicts.

He wrote that “Nigeria’s conflicts are multi-faceted, driven by ethnic rivalries, land disputes and criminality, with religion often secondary.” He also argued that “claims of a religious war between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria are simplistic and betray ignorance of the country’s internal dynamics.”

Responding in her X post, Logan said: “Wow. Al Jazeera is profoundly wrong on this. I have been covering the Christian Genocide in Nigeria for years - largely thanks to the incredible work of Nigerian journalists like Lawrence Zongo, Tom Garba, Masara Kim & their colleagues at Truth Nigeria.”

She accused Al Jazeera of ignoring the ideological and religious motivations behind the violence.

“Herders who carry the black flag of al Qaeda & scream ‘Allah uAkbar’ as they slaughter women & children in village after village are not motivated by climate change but ideology,” she wrote.

Logan added that the attacks were deliberately designed to wipe out Christian communities.

“The attacks are time to destroy crops & prevent the return of people to their homes, thereby cleansing the land of Christians,” she said.

Her remarks directly contradict Kakanda’s position that “to present these conflicts as evidence of a Christian genocide erases these realities and distorts Nigeria’s history.”

Kakanda had also claimed that “most of Boko Haram’s victims have been Muslims,” and accused Western media figures such as American host Bill Maher of pushing “fabricated claims and manipulated images from unverified outlets.”

But Logan described such arguments as deceptive attempts to blur the truth.

“The truth is always simple at it’s core - those who seek to create ambiguity make it complex so they can deceive,” she stated.

Her X post has since drawn widespread attention, reigniting debate over how global media frames Nigeria’s ongoing violence.

SaharaReporters earlier reported on Monday that Nigerian actor and media consultant Joseph Chidi Okechukwu, popularly known as J. C. Okechukwu, had threatened to lead a mass boycott of Al Jazeera in response to Kakanda’s article.

He accused the network of “mocking the blood of innocent Christians” and vowed to mobilise churches and civil society groups to stop watching and engaging with Al Jazeera content unless the opinion piece was retracted and a public apology issued.
