Fear Of Protest Stops Nigerian Military From Seizing Power From Civilians — Sowore

by Nafisat Abdulrahman

Against the backdrop of fear of possible return to power by the Nigerian military, human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has said that the fear of public protests has always kept the Nigerian military under control and deter them from seizing power.

Speaking on the MIC On Podcast on Saturday, Sowore declared his opposition to military rule, stressing that he would never support or participate in any protest that could pave the way for the military to return to power.

“I am opposed to military rule. I will never partake in a protest that allows the military to come to power in this country,” Sowore said.

He, however, criticised what he described as the “excesses of civilians” currently in government, accusing them of mismanaging the nation’s economy and democratic rights under the guise of preventing military intervention.

But I also do not overlook the excesses of civilians who are here, those mismanaging their rights, the economy, their dignity, just because somebody says, ‘Oh, if you do that, the military will take over power,’” he stated.

According to him, coups in Nigeria’s history were never triggered by civilian protests but by deliberate plans and executions within the military.

“All the times the military has taken over power in Nigeria, it wasn’t because of protests; it was because they planned it and executed it,” Sowore explained.

In fact, it is the fear of protest that has driven the military out of power. It is the fear of protest that has always kept the military under control—or when they are confronted with protest,” he added.

Recall that Sowore had begun mobilisation for what he described as a peaceful protest against the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), slated for October 20.

Sowore Is right that protest power keeps the military away..

But It's also truth that tinubu political control and experience have helped maintain that fragile balance..

He knows when to bend and when to stand straight

At this point, if the military comes back they won't be any protest cos Nigerians are tired of suffering under Tinubu. APC wouldn't be able to bribe people to protest for them cos under military rule it would be seen as treason and they and their sponsors would be executed.

So believe me when I tell you that if Tinubu is kicked out tomorrow, the country would be as peaceful as ever, there might be some grumbling on social media which would obviously be banned by the military for some time...days and weeks after the coup, life would get back to normal. We Nigerians know how to adpat to situations fast.

No. Fear of sanctions

Army coup worked when there were two superpowers. So any coupist could hook up with say the USSR ( kerekou of benin, mengistu of Ethiopia and nguesso of congo or)..and tell the USA up yours.

Today? Maybe china might support you, maybe Russia may back you, but they are limited in what they can do. Plus USA basically controls world trade. If they lock you out, palaver go start. Afghanistan is suffering quietly since the Taliban took over.

As for protest, it's only tinubu supporters that may protest if there is a coup in Nigeria. Atiku and obi supporters will keep quiet. Because that's how the game is played. If you don't lose you win.

Even if the military wanted to take over, I don't believe that they could. We are talking about taking over a country with one of the largest population in Africa, whose demography includes a high percentage of young people, who are themselves precocious and technologically savvy and quick to get irate, like endsars....So the military cannot deploy slow, analog tactics of Abacha era to conduct coup in present day Nigeria. To do this successfully, it must involve heavy, tech skilled civilian participation. Something to rile up the mainstream and hurl the resulting "hell in a hand bag" against the weak, corrupt and rotting institutions of democracy.... Whilst preparing their own military objectives in secrecy .... I don't believe the military have such minds to conduct such.

A determined military plotter won't be deterred by fear of protests...

Won't be held back by that.

Besides with the current situation of Nigeria not many people would protest a military take over.

If protests does happen it can be handled and in a few weeks or months everything would be forgotten.

Especially, if they come up with convincing policies or roadmap to change things!
Re: Fear Of Protest Stops Military From Seizing Power From Civilians — Sowore by MadamExcellency: 4:17pm On Oct 19, 2025
Which protest? Has the protest released Nnamdi Kanu from DSS custody under the civilian regime?

Maybe fear of disintegration is the right statement, not protest.

...and you'll be used as target practice any day you complain about anything while under the military rule.
As long as the military ruler is a Nigerian, you'll start crying just as soon as they come on board. The only difference between now and then is that, you won't even have the right to post the rubbish you're posting here without getting lost forever.
I know most of you are kids, but at least, ask elders in your family.
Re: Fear Of Protest Stops Military From Seizing Power From Civilians — Sowore by badoh(m):
When Buhari was damaging the country, the northern part of the country looked away and kept mute cos they were enjoying the movie, now that Tinubu is winning over opposition, the likes of El-Rufai and Atiku will be praying that the military should strike because they know that their chances keeps dwindling everyday. That is why as a president you should never entrust key sensitive military formations in the hands of those not from your region. I also know a particular section of the country is also praying for military takeover, they believe if they cant have it, then southwest should not have it, that was why they thwarted the ambition of MKO and supported the military government not to handover power to Abiola.
I'm not in total support of Asiwaju but you cant take the backdoor to seize over power from the southwest, it will definitely backfire and the protest that will follow may be difficult to bring under control. They have seen it is practically impossible to stop him through the ballot and now trying to use the military to usurp his government. The northerners better be patient until 2031 when it will be their turn instead of looking for short cut to take over power.
