Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga accuses Barrister Aloy Ejimakor of subjudice conduct, urges legal authorities to sanction him

The Presidency has urged legal authorities to sanction Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, for allegedly violating legal ethics by joining the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, made the call on Monday via a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle. He described Ejimakor’s participation in the protest as “unethical” and “subjudice,” given that Kanu’s trial is still ongoing before a competent court.

“I spotted Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, among the small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by Omoyele Sowore,” Onanuga wrote.

“I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest. As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court.”

According to Onanuga, the prosecution had already concluded its case against Kanu, making it imperative for the defence to focus on presenting a strong legal argument instead of engaging in public protests.

“The prosecution has concluded its case. It is now incumbent upon Ejimakor and the other lawyers to mount a strong defence for Kanu rather than resorting to extra-legal tactics,” he added.

“Ejimakor’s actions raise serious ethical concerns. Legal authorities should consider appropriate sanctions for this unprofessional conduct.”

The comment from the Presidency came amid continuing demonstrations in Abuja and other cities, demanding the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021 following his arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria.

He should banned from representing anyone in Court and be restricted to drawing tenement agreements.

You do wonder what sort of brainless people we have running this country. That Ejimakor is Nnamdi Kanu's Lawyer does not take away his constitutional right to peacefully protest for any cause he so chooses. What is wrong with people?

Protests is a fundamental human right. Let them take him to court for Protesting for human rights of his client after more than 4 years of stalled judgement.

Speaking of brainless, he is taking part in a demonstration to free his client, in which the court has told him to open his defense?

So basically he doesn’t believe in the capacity of the court.

This has nothing to do with the court, the judiciary is seperate from government. His protest is against government and the constitution has given him and everybody else the right to protest anything they want
