The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the federal government to provide clear information on the alleged coup plot reportedly linked to the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration, News360 Nigeria reports.

In a statement issued on Monday by Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, the ADC urged the government to “address the nation transparently if any threat truly exists.”

Recent reports claimed that the cancellation of the Independence Day parade on October 1 was connected to a foiled military coup attempt. However, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has denied any link between the two incidents, describing the reports as false.

Abdullahi said while the ADC condemns any move to undermine Nigeria’s democratic order, the government must not use the alleged plot as an excuse to intimidate opposition voices or manipulate public perception.

“The ADC has been following reports of an alleged coup plot involving some arrested military officers and claims that a former southern governor is under investigation for allegedly funding them,” the statement read.

“While we strongly oppose any action that threatens Nigeria’s constitutional order, we are equally worried about the possibility of using such allegations to justify political witch-hunts, suppress dissent, or manipulate public opinion.”

He expressed concern over conflicting government statements and the DHQ’s denial of any knowledge of a coup attempt, noting that the federal government’s silence had allowed rumours to spread, thereby raising doubts about the authenticity of the reports.

“What appears clear is that the government is using the coup narrative to divert attention from widespread misgovernance and to curry public sympathy,” Abdullahi added.

He warned against using the alleged plot as a tool to target political opponents, stressing that such actions could threaten democracy and civil liberties.

“The government has a duty to clarify the true nature of the alleged coup and address the nation transparently if any threat truly exists. It must desist from weaponising national security to silence political opposition,” he said.

The ADC reaffirmed its opposition to all forms of dictatorship, military or civilian, and expressed its support for lawful actions aimed at upholding Nigeria’s constitution.

My own issue is not with APC on this matter rather it is with the alleged coup plotters. Why on earth did they allegedly fail. Though I won't support lose of life in the alleged process. An alleged bloodless coup would have allegedly done the needed change.
