The road in front of my hostel is clean, smooth, not a single pothole — yet they’ve been fixing it every night for the past 3 days. I even looked twice to confirm there’s nothing wrong. The Nigerian in me simply can’t relate. Now I truly understand what it means to use taxpayers’ money well. 📸 Pic 1: The spotless untarred road — you’ll spot the black shuttle and the saloon car (pretty sure that section is next). 📸 Pic 2: The same road, freshly tarred — spot the green cone. Somebody should tag our govt, FERMA, Ministry of Works, and all our media men

Rictech:I see and do sympathise with you. Your school should have assigned a Japanese to you so you go through the system. Except things have changed, that was the flow of events and I had a Japanese labmate walk me through. |
| Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Rictech: 5:25pm On Oct 11, 2025 |
Gerrard59:They did assign someone, but the supporter said he’s very busy preparing for a conference presentation with his professor. My labmates advised me to report that he’s currently unavailable to the International Students/Student Affairs Division, which I did. They’ve promised to look into it. By the way, all my labmates are non-Japanese PhD students. |

Rictech:Bad market there. Ask for a Japanese or maybe Chinese. You need someone who understands Kanji to make the process seamless. Alternatively, if the person is non-Japanese or non-East Asian, a minimum of three years of residence in the country. In my books, there is a huge difference between a "non-Japanese" and a "non-East Asian". |

judecares1:Thanks Judecares1! I actually already made a katakana hanko on Thursday and also visited the City Hall to register my address. Oga blackbriar, hope you are good? It's been a while. Modified: I just got my Japanese SIM card now. I used my Nigerian ATM(MasterCard).

Rictech:Congratulations and welcome to Japan. Transportation Saving Tips 1. Get a bicyle from a used shop for like 1 -2k yen, registered and get insurance for like 500 yen. 2. Usually schools sell discount public bus tickets, try to find out about this. Phone saving tips Be very very careful with this one. it can get really expensive fast. I have seen students get into big debts of 20,000 yen monthly for phone and internet. I dont think anyone uses their phone (sim i mean) but most of apps (LINE) and Whatsapp. if you have wifi at dorm and at school, do you need a sim for now? Credit card I think you can get a rakuten credit card. but be careful again. you will need a japanese student colleague to help you apply for this one, so that your sign up for a wrong option. Food 1. See that "SAIZERIYA"; life saving restaurant!!!!!!!!! however, if you cook, it is way way cheaper and healthier. No foolow japese student dey eat cup noodles and ocha everyday abeg. You will enjoy japan for its convenience with shopping. keep a budget sheet for now to track expenses. Winter Shopping Winter is coming soonest. Start planning for winter shopping. Just go to UNIQLO. Must get are 1. Heat tech ( long johns and Vest) 2. Warn slipplers/mufflers for feet. 3. A good warm jacket. [You can check used store fo rgood cheap jackets, as brand new one would cost around 10,000 yen] 4. And if the snow are thick like in niigata and aomori, a very very good winter boot. Nihongo Please, sign up for and attend dedicatedly the free basic japanese languge classes that the univeristy offers. And most importantly, have fun. if you play any sport, get into it again. I know a guy, who got a Job becuase the people he associated with all do taekwando, currently posted to USA branch of a global japnese comapny. that is networking. Enjoy yourself and explore. My humble 2 cents. Otsukare. |

Big chief, i did pm you, i am looking to apply for Language school that opens in April Ok, I had a serious issue in Nigeria. I had booked my flight to leave via Qatar Airways, but on getting to the Qatar desk in Nigeria the agent profiling me started asking for all sorts of things, my degree certificate, my nysc certificate, my admission letter, and all sort of nonsense. After I presented everything he then went and asked if I had paid my school fees. I told him I had paid and showed him the receipt. The man said he needed to see money leaving my Nigerian account to the Japanese account. Meanwhile I had paid the money to a family friend who used his own money in Japan to pay so he didn't necessarily need to move money from Nigeria to Japan. This Qatar agent just went loco on me, he insisted I bought a return ticket again. I was like how do you buy a return ticket on a two year travel visa? What date would I put on it? To cut the long story short the man wickedly made me miss my flight. I was devastated,I then met one of his colleagues who said I should come the next day. I got to the airport the next day and the there was a little back and forth with some of them at the desk and a more reasonable person asked me some questions and said he would allow me fly that I was good to go. But then I had to rebook another flight since I add missed my first flight but then no extra seat so I had go back home again. Anyways the all scenario set me back another 900k to rebook another flight for Wednesday. Got to the airport met with the people who profiled me on Saturday and finally left the country on the 1st of October.
|

Geetee111:Hello bro, I didn't see the mail...I am really sorry. I don't think this nairaland email works. I didn't go through language school, I came here for masters so the process will be different. I think it's better you ask your questions out in the open here so you can have answers from more experienced people. |

judecares1:I don't even know how to ride bike, so I guess I will have to adapt with the walks. My school is like 17mins from my house. I am in the main centre here in kobe so everything thing is like 15-17mins walk from me. The next thing now is language and job. |

Hello I have asked earlier and nobody answered me. I've been trying to book appointment for visa application VfS for over a month now without luck. Anyone with how to go about it? |
| Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Rictech: 10:19am On Oct 13, 2025 |
duncanmighty:Just book the earliest available date you can find. Then, create a 2nd account using a different email address—don’t book with this one, just use it to monitor the available dates regularly (check every hour or so). People often cancel their appointments, so earlier dates do open up from time to time. Once you find a closer date on the 2nd account, switch back to your original account and reschedule your appointment to that earlier slot. That’s what I did, and it worked for me. Good luck! |
| Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by duncanmighty: 10:53am On Oct 13, 2025 |
Thank you for your reply, the funny thing is I keep tab on the VFS website day and night and it's frustrating that not even a date has ever been displayed. All I always see is there are no appointments dates at the moment and that I should keep checking. Or am I not getting it right,? That’s what I did, and it worked for me. Good luck!

Just book the earliest available date you can find. Nfest:I did apply to ISI and Arc languages school, both of them came back with a note that they don’t accept direct application for Nigerians because of proof of funds and COE, that I need a third party agent to help me do the application, I believe it’s as a result of forgery. |

Rictech:Good day house, @Rictech, please correct me if I'm wrong, I've read through the thread and discovered your journey, from applying to arrival lasted for around 5 months... Please, does that mean I can meet up with April if I start the process now, or have you started already before coming to this thread? @Blackbriar and Gerrard59, it's interesting to read about the research route both of you have spoken extensively about, actually the first time I'm hearing of such and would love to try it out, now my question is, considering I have a certificate of English proficiency from my university, can that be used in lieu of the IELTS? (I used it in all my applications to universities in South Korean and Latvia and none rejected it, just want to know if same can apply here). PS: I have a B.Sc in Plant Science and Biotechnology, so will be applying for something in that line Also, how INTENSIVE is the research study in Japan, from my research about S.K, I found out the research process is so intensive one basically spends the whole day, every work day, in the lab, hence leaving no room for part time jobs. Is that the same with Japan? Aside the normal factory PT jobs, can one get a part time job as an English teacher in a tutorial centre? (I have the necessary certificates for that, such as TEFL certificate and C2 certificate in English proficiency) Discovering that one can actually get residency stuff in Japan is what's making me gradually look away from SK |
| Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Gerrard59(m): 2:44am On Oct 19, 2025 |
Yampotatocarrot:Yes. Now is the time to start, esp between now and the middle of next month. Start messaging those profs. To gain admission into a Japanese university as a grad student (postdoc is different), you commence the application SIX MONTHS ahead of time. @Black.briar and Gerrar,d59, it's interesting to read about the research route both of you have spoken extensively about, actually the first time I'm hearing of such and would love to try it out, now my question is, considering I have a certificate of English proficiency from my university, can that be used in lieu of the IELTS? (I used it in all my applications to universities in South Korean and Latvia and none rejected it, just want to know if same can apply here).Yes. But first discuss with the international student admission office of that particular department or faculty. Once given go-ahead, you use it. If they initially oppose, lay your points why they should accept it. PS: I have a B.Sc in Plant Science and Biotechnology, so will be applying for something in that lineAs I have written elsewhere, whatever you get in Japan, expect X2 of it in China and South Korea. So, yes, the research system here is thorough, detail and hard work. When I was a grad student, I used to take things jolly jolly until I noticed some of my lab mates (Japanese and Chinese) used the lab on weekends. The foreign postdocs (Korean and Indonesians) also came on weekends. Nobody tell me to dey follow enter lab on weekends. This was crucial as there were weekly lab reports. So you have to utilise every time to ensure you have a result update to present, else the prof thinks you are slacking, and as the only Black student, I did not want to stain the white. The research system is good as every equipment, chemical and journal (all students had access to the latest and top journals at the click of the button) is available. So no excuses. You want to research? Japan and the rest of East Asia is there you. I knew a fellow Nigerian in the same department but a different building who was conducting lab work back to back. He is now a postdoc in a university in a different prefecture. Aside the normal factory PT jobs, can one get a part time job as an English teacher in a tutorial centre? (I have the necessary certificates for that, such as TEFL certificate and C2 certificate in English proficiency)Yes. There is also ISA which normally employs foreign grad students to teach students across the country. The usual English tutorial centres are okay, but the wages are not high as they are standardised just like every part time job. But the warehouse jobs pay higher because they have night shifts. So one can technically max part-time work hours per month and earn 200K yen. I know a Burkinabe who did this and probably still does. But please note: continuous work in the warehouse or similar environment would affect your erection abilities. Your preek would not stand after doing one month there. Discovering that one can actually get residency stuff in Japan is what's making me gradually look away from SKWetin do South Korea? I know a Nigerian who told me he did his MSc there, but decided to obtain his PhD from Japan and prefers living here over SK because in his words, "The South Koreans are friendly/open to foreigners, but their labour market isn't. The Japanese are reserved and not open to foreigners, but their labour market is open". This "residency", is it eventual permanent residency? No permanent residency pathway in South Korea? |
| Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Yampotatocarrot(m): 5:22am On Oct 19, 2025 |
Gerrard59:Thank you for your detailed response. There is, but information on it isn't as detailed as the one for Japan. Atleast, I can say I read about the processes for Japan twice just going through the thread yesterday, whereas haven't come across any of such for SK. I have started browsing and jotting sown laboratories whose researches aligns with my interest. Thank you again |
| Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Nfest: 5:40am On Oct 19, 2025 |
Geetee111:Sorry for the late reply, I didn't use any agent in my own case so I don't have an idea. Try to find out how you can contact the agents. Agents from Japan will cost good money but they will make everything extremely easy for you. You can search for Japanese language school agents on Google if it will bring back results. |
| Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Rictech: 6:38am On Oct 19, 2025 |
Yampotatocarrot:Regarding the bold part — no, I hadn't started the process before coming to this thread. It was after reading through the thread and making the post you quoted (on May 16) that I began emailing professors (on May 20). I received a lot of "sorry" emails at first — mostly along the lines of “Sorry, I'm not accepting students at the moment.” "Sorry, I'm in my retirement year". It wasn’t until the first week of June that I finally got a positive response. So yes, as Gerrard59 said, it’s definitely still possible to make it for the April 2026 intake. |

Gerrard59:Good morning sir, please I intend on going to Japan to work, maybe on an E9 visa, that's the unskilled labour like factory jobs, farming and the likes, but it's not showing on their site I guess they don't give it to Nigerians,is there a way I can get a company in Japan or even Korea that will be able to give me employment from over there so I can be able to travel from here, and show the embassy here that I got employed already to work sir, please anyone with any knowledge at all should please leave a comment |
| Re: Japanese Visa And Travelling To Japan by Gerrard59(m): 8:39am On Oct 21, 2025 |
investorcj:Can you post the link here because on Google, there is nothing like an E9 visa. That said, I think there are specific companies that recruit or match applicants to companies, but you need to know the language up to N3 level. Cameroonians have a strong number here due to the Japanese language school in their country. Getting a job here is not the issue; it is knowing the language. It is extremely important. |
