You're right, but we're Nigerians and we're traditional people to a great extent. Regina's father didn't pay her mother's brideprice quite alright which rules out the position of the father. But during our parent's time and even now to a large extent, if parents don't want a marriage to hold, they would tell their child 'you're on your own if you go to that family,' Infact the parents wouldn't even entertain the family of the other party sending a signal to the other family that they don't wish the union to hold. The other family will even advise their own person to abort mission.

In Regina's case, say the mom did that, what would Ned or Regina have done? Since they won't be able to do anything traditionally, will they elope or do court wedding? Ned can't even do that because of his status. I strongly believe you don't have to support your family to the destruction of themselves.
