AS president in 2011, Goodluck Jonathan did all he could to ensure South West grabbed the country’s number four seat, including lobbying then opposition leaders from the zone, to no avail. The North West eventually grabbed the seat, supported by South West leaders in opposition to then ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Former Governor of Osun State and now statesman, Chief Bisi Akande, made this revelation in his autobiography, “My Participations” which is currently dominating political and national dis- course.

Aminu Tambuwal, now Sokoto State governor, won the seat, against the preferred pick of his party, Mrs Mulikat Adeola Akande, from the South-West. Defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, then a fledging opposition, which had Akande and his soulmate, former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, as front- line leaders, openly asked its elected members of the House of Representatives, mostly from the South-West, to work against their region and back Tambuwal from North-West.

The opposition party’s support carried Tambuwal through the contest against Akande, then ruling party’s favourite for the speakership seat.

In his book, Chief Akande revealed that former president then as incumbent, personally reached out to Tinubu, who is now believed to be nursing presidential aspiration in 2023 and himself, but couldn’t convince them.

He wrote, “President Jonathan, immediately after the meeting (with political parties), called Bola Tinubu aside into a lobby to broach the matter of ACN support for a choice of who would become the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Mrs Olakunrin died of gunshot wounds in July 2019 after her vehicle was attacked by armed men, suspected to be marauding Fulani bandits whose violent activities had reached a frightening level across the southwest states.

Quoting an account from Atiku, the authors said the trio of Ibrahim Babangida, Theophilus Danjuma and Abdulsalami Abubakar wanted PDP to adopt Obasanjo as their presidential candidate “because they considered him the best person for the job.”

“Implicit in their position was their belief that they knew how to manipulate Obasanjo and the fact that Obasanjo did their bidding in 1979. They felt secure that he could be managed again,” the authors wrote.

Atiku was reportedly asked to join a team to Ogun to inform Obasanjo that he was going to run for the highest office in the land.

“When Atiku and Obasanjo discussed the call to serve as president, Obasanjo said he could not be president because he was a nearly bankrupt ex-convict. Atiku, through General (Aliyu) Gusau, paid money into Obasanjo’s account to begin his financial rehabilitation.

“Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar helped out by granting him an unconditional pardon. Atiku put everything he had at his disposal to support Obasanjo’s emergence as the PDP presidential candidate and, when he joined the ticket as the vice-presidential nominee, continued to make his assets available to Obasanjo and the campaign.

A coup can be orchestrated from anywhere. Al Mustapha was not your usual low cadre, he was very powerful and influential within the military and they paid him visits in detention to seek his opinion before certain decisions were taken.

If you had taken time to understand my response, you would have understood that it was not only a Southerner that had willingly handed over power to civilian rule but a Northerner too had done the same and I cited Abuldusalam Abubakar as an example of a Northerner who is not power hungry even though most Northerners are power hungry. However, Atiku didn't have the power in 2003 to make Obasanjo a one time president then and the fact that a book was written doesn't mean everything written in that book were facts.

Dude Zik never joined anyone to plat figure head. The elections of 1959 saw a hung parliament with NPC having more seats and NCNC coming second Action group was last. But NOC didn't have sufficient seats to form a government, so it had to be any two parties that can form a coalition. Sardauna fearing a coalition of southern parties said that if the two southern parties form a coalition then the north will not follow for independence. In Lancaster years before the founding fathers as they were so called all signed a document that as a precondition of independence thw borders of colonial Nigeria must not be touched. Based on this the British through Sir James Robertson, stated that NPC and any other party in the south can form a coalition. Now NPC having more seats on the coalition will appoint the prime minister while the southern party will appoint the president.
Please these lies have persisted for far too long against Zik.
