A gubernatorial aspirant and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Senator AbdulFatai Buhari, PhD, who currently represents Oyo North Senatorial District, has urged the people of Oyo State to assess him based on his competence, track record, and leadership qualities — not otherwise. Speaking during political engagements with Oyo APC stakeholders across different levels and notable traditional rulers from Ibadan, the lawmaker emphasized that his ambition to govern the state should be viewed through the lens of his achievements and the impact he has made as a legislator. In his words, “I want the good people of Oyo State to assess me by what I can do — my competence, my track record, and the leadership qualities I have demonstrated over the years. “I believe in internal democracy and I am ready for a free and fair contest anytime, any day. When the party speaks, I abide by its decision. I am guided by a simple belief: what is meant for me, no one can take away. I place my faith in that process and in the people.” Senator Buhari further stated that his gubernatorial ambition is not driven by a sense of entitlement, but by loyalty to the party and a deep passion to contribute more to the development of Oyo State. In their separate but unanimous remarks, party leaders and stakeholders expressed confidence in Senator Buhari’s aspiration, describing him as one of the most viable and sellable aspirants the APC is considering flying its gubernatorial ticket. The traditional rulers present maintained that a possible power shift to another part of the state would not be injurious to Ibadan, stressing that Oyo State remains one, irrespective of which zone produces the next governor. They added, “It is time to shun politics of sentiment and ethnicity. What Oyo State needs now is politics of development and prosperity.” As the momentum toward the 2027 gubernatorial election gathers pace and discussions intensify on who will succeed Governor Seyi Makinde of the PDP, the call for equitable power rotation across the state’s geopolitical zones and senatorial districts continues to shape the dynamics of Oyo politics.
