You need a refund of your school fees from the MiraKuru Center you attended....

Does every person in Nigeria live in a place like Lekki ?

You can't think that this discourse is meant to assess people in general / the average person ?

Did they specify people living in Manhattan, USA?
I'm more interested in the healthcare basic amenities and infrastructures the citizens enjoys in the US.

The monthly minimum wage in US is $1500.
The monthly minimum wage in Nigeria is #70000
What u should be comparing is the value of $1500 in the USA to #70000 in Nigeria.
I hope u understand?
That ur 1.5million is roughly 2yrs salary of a minimum wage earner in Nigeria and $1000 is made in less than a month in the USA

You are almost a homeless man if you earn $1k a month in US but N1.5m in Nigeria, you are considered rich in all ramifications, if you live outside Abuja, lagos and PH you are even almost Top middle class.

if he is successful he would have domestic staff!

1. He isn't successful
2. In USA you don't actually own a house even after you paid all the mortgage! You can't escape property tax ! They would be taking the house event year , failure to pay that you get to loose your house
3. You don't pay driver's ₦80,000 in today's Nigeria you pay more than that
4. If you are earning 1 million upwards monthly in Nigeria, you aren't a lower class, you are in upper middle class and you are doing well

People should compare apple to apple not apple to oranges.. If they wanna compare, they should compare 1.5million naira to 1.5million dollars or 1000naira to 1000dollars..
America is a country and nigeria is also a country..

N1,500,000 in Nigeria because $1000 won't be enough for your monthly rent here in the States alone not to talk about other bills. Know that before you leave Naija.
U cant make 1.5million naira in Nigeria for good 2yrs if u are on minimum wage
But in the usa u can make $1000 in less than a month on minimum wage there.
Pls lets switch
I pray God answer my prayers. Let me go to the USA and u return back to Nigeria. AMEN

The reason why life is cheaper in nigeria than in the USA...is because of the cheap labour.

In a way, for example, most workers in NIgeria...especially the ones that bring you your food, clothes, etc...get paid a wage that may be survival level for nigeria, but if you paid a US worker that wage, they go call the employer slave master.

Funny that people think that the article is discouraging people from japa. If you want to japa to the USA, PLEASE DO. At least you will be living in a place with light and water (because unlike in nigeria, everybody pays market price for power and water...but that's a digression)...but remember, if you want a decent paying job, go there with decent qualifications. Don't go there with qualificatons that won't let you land a job. If possible, get USA qualifications self.

(Trump is making things harder though for immigrants, legal and illegal).

Enough of these noise and comparisons.

If the conditions are better in Nigeria, the folks abroad will return. You don’t need to sweet talk them into returning.

Less than 2% of folks who left have returned, the remaining 98% who stayed back have their reasons. The government of the day should quit these japa propaganda and focus on making Nigeria work for Nigerians
Many of them can’t return for a number of reasons
1) they will return to a lower status then their peers who stayed behind and worked their way up
2) they have little or no savings
3) by the time they have become comfortable abroad they have become used to the system and trapped by the system abroad and too old to start all over in Nigeria
4) pride
5) 98% wish they could come back, the main reason they don’t come back is because by the time they are settled over there they are so invested in the system, they can’t just pull themselves out. They have credit card debts, car loans, mortgage debt etc. plus many also have kids in school. That alone is why most remain.

Ratio of public to private schools in Lagos State is one to 22 ― Commissioner
September 4, 2022

The Lagos State government has said the ratio of public to private schools at both primary and secondary school levels in the state is one to 22.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, gave the revelation in her remark at the 2022 edition of the Total School Support Seminar Exhibition (TOSSE) held at Oregun in Ikeja between Thursday and Friday.

But in the U.S., $1,000 barely covers groceries and gas. It’s roughly $6.50 an hour, far below the federal minimum wage. The same income that makes one comfortable in Lagos barely keeps another afloat in Texas.

Is OP talking about $1000 annually for groceries and gas?
I don't understand the mathematics of $6.50 an hour as well.

How were you able to quantity this statistics? What tools did you use/sample size. Now I understand why I was told that all statistics are made up until proven otherwise.

USA is better than Scotland, and I've been staying in Scotland since 2001. I've never felt the need to come back and live in Nigeria but I do visit once a year or once in two years and I don't stay more than 2weeks or at maximum a month. I enjoy visiting Nigeria but not to come back and stay permanently.

I have colleagues in the UK, Canada, Germany, Malta, Luxembourg, Switzerland in the same boat. We all love Nigeria but we enjoy visiting and going back to base.

I am happy that more and more people are begining to have 'quality of life' conversations about their existence within their geo-political entities.

The next step will be to make the linkages between their political choices and the consequent effects of governance on their experiences.

In a nutshell begin to foster ideological politicking, slowly discarding sentiment for objective decision making.

Only then will a nation make meaningful, all encompassing and sustainable progress.

Because I lived in the UK for 20 yrs. Many of my contemporaries who remain have simply accepted their fate, not because they don’t wish they could have come back and these are people who are citizens. Don’t forget, many also have kids in school.

Do what's right for you since no one is asking you not to come to the State. Na your choice. Nobody tied you for there. There is freedom of movement as long as you get your money to do so.

As for me, East or West, North or South, home remains the best.
.
Life is what you make of it.

Everything depends on perception.

Here in Nigeria, without bothering to compare it with what obtains abroad, many people who live in Lagos, for example, are better off living in their home-States or even villages.

By the same token, many people who live in their State capitals or big cities would be better off going back to their towns or villages.

But, come to think of it, many, after living a life of deprivation for so many years, feel ashamed to go back home empty-handed and would rather prefer to live under bridges, uncomplicated buildings or even living in the open and exposed to the elements.

They continue to live a life of hoping against hope or what in common parlance is referred to as "ego better" or simply "we die here"!

Back to our case study: America.

We are quick to showcase those who" make it" or "made it" but oblivious of the fact of the teeming majority who live as destitutes.

I had rather die in dignity in my own country than be subjected to subhuman conditions while engaging in self-deceit of living "abroad".

Life is a personal choice!

The friend runs a successful business and also owns several properties in the USA yet he was sad there was no one to cook for him and his friend and no one to send on an errand…this is after living in the US for about 20 years.

I thought there were lots of restaurants and fast food outlets where one could order food online or am I making assumptions?

This friend is probably single after living in the US for nearly 20 years, runs his business, own properties and yet he couldn’t order food online.

What brought about $1000 to this story? What sort of comparison is that?
Who creates these topics??

Seun, you need to clean up this site. Stories here need to be vetted before you send to the fp.

The other day, someone created a thread comparing 3 foods and asking which of the foods should be deleted forever.

If you make 800k in Nigeria on a monthly basis you are loving a better life than someone making $1500 USD in New York or California

That's a poverty income it can't even pay you your monthly rent not talking of decent food
Yes, and that's because even a sales girl at Walmart can easily make that $2500 monthly, in Naija even a professor in Neurosurgery doesn't earn 1.5m monthly.

DoTheNeedful:
I have been living in the US for almost a decade, and I can tell you that value of $1,000 in the US is less than 90k in Nigeria.

It is surprising that many of you, including graduates, don't understand that you can't just arbitrarily convert dollars or pounds to naira in this context.

You cannot start a family anywhere in the US with $1, 000. You would need at least a job that pays you $6,000 per month to think of marriage. An ideal monthly salary would be around $10,000.

With 1.5 million in Nigeria, you can afford to marry a jobless partner, support two children, and own a decent car.

You could eat out in Nigeria with 2k, but eating out in the US would cost you around 25 dollars (35k). I get a haircut every month for $50 (75k) in the US. In Nigeria, I could get the same haircut for around 1k.

If you have a baby in the US, you would need to spend around $2,000 (3 million) per month on day care. In Nigeria, you would pay maybe 50k.

I laugh each time I see some posts on social media converting people's salary in UK/US/CA to naira, thinking the naira equivalent of those figures have the same impact in those countries. It is unfortunate that some people have such mentality.

That being said, if you manage to have some savings in places like US and you bring such to Nigeria, you could tie up a project.
Too many wrong comparisons here.

1k for haircut in Nigeria?
Then there are also places in the US you can have an haircut for 15 or 20.

Eat out 2k in Nigeria?
Then you can also eat out in the US for 5, 10 or even 15.
You don't need 10k salary to live and have a family with 2 children in the US. You can as well live with less than 5k.

Except you're claiming people in the US with at least 2 children earning from 6k upwards.

That’s the same amount
Abroad, in the US or Canada
Your kids get feee education in public schools
If you pay your taxes for up to 10 years you’ll get a pension
You have access to welfare, soup kitchens, child credits
Food is also very cheap. The major problem with that amount is just accomodation. If you’re not ashamed you can be on welfare and you’ll get discounted housing and food stamps
Security, electricity, fairly good roads, potable water, cheap public transportation are taken for granted
You can get job place healthcare insurance in the US while in Canada healthcare is free

Of course you can earn more money if you’re ready to work harder

Now talks you still want to compare?

Please stop making baseless comparisons. Nobody earns $1000 per month in America because it's even below the minimum wage. It's not like Nigeria where companies still pay #50k per month whereas the minimum wage is #70k.
