$1000 in the US will live a better life

For 1000 USD you can eat whatever food you like. A can of coke is just $1.
says who? You can't even pay rent with that

says who ?

It’s unbelievable that in 2025 — in the richest country on the planet — tens of millions of Americans still can’t afford decent health care.

According to Gallup and the West Health Institute, around 91 million Americans — that’s more than one in three — say they couldn’t access quality health care if they needed it today. Among households earning under $24,000 a year, nearly two-thirds can’t afford to see a doctor. Even middle-income families earning up to $48,000 aren’t far behind, with 57% struggling to pay for care.

Let that sink in: working people, people who do everything right, are one medical bill away from financial ruin.

We call ourselves a country of opportunity, but how much opportunity exists when a single trip to the ER can erase someone’s savings? When people skip prescriptions because the cost of insulin or antibiotics competes with rent or groceries?

The truth is simple — low wages and high health costs are breaking Americans. Health care shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for those with high-paying jobs or corporate insurance. It’s a basic human right, and the system is long overdue for reform.

Until we start treating health care as a right — not a privilege — the “American Dream” will remain out of reach for far too many.

That’s the same amount
Abroad, in the US or Canada
Your kids get feee education in public schools
If you pay your taxes for up to 10 years you’ll get a pension
You have access to welfare, soup kitchens, child credits
Food is also very cheap. The major problem with that amount is just accomodation. If you’re not ashamed you can be on welfare and you’ll get discounted housing and food stamps
Security, electricity, fairly good roads, potable water, cheap public transportation are taken for granted
You can get job place healthcare insurance in the US while in Canada healthcare is free

Of course you can earn more money if you’re ready to work harder

Now talks you still want to compare?
We are talking people who EARN and PAY their own way.
You still want to compare $1000 to N1.5m?

This comparison would have been ok if it was easy to earn that #1.5m in Nigeria just like you earn the $1k in USA. Cus if it so, I will choose Nigeria over and over again while earning that amount.
Just like the op said, earning that amount in Nigeria will make you feel like a king which you can get in America.
And like I always repeatedly say, my attraction of going abroad is to go visit and holiday in some interesting cities. Never to go stay permanently, that's if I am well to do in Nigeria here.
But while still struggling here, I can go over there to work for the money. My take

Can random nobody just start earning 1.5m naira monthly just like that both in public and private sector in Nigeria? Do your findings. Shebi one of your fellow defenders just said in America you can earn $1000 usd depending on how many hours you put in.

Can you do this in Nigeria without knowing anybody ? No! These days even cleaner jobs you must know somebody, they don turn am to family and friends workplace. Mind private sector has joined in this behavior. Where you wan even see the per hour job for naira sef.

How many earn 1.5m in Nigeria to start with.
Maybe in your circle of family and friends most of them earn that much, granted. The problem is now using your circle to generalize for the whole Nigeria. That is thoughtless and wicked.
No need for long talk. You prayed to be in US making minimum wage (less that $1K per month) while he'll be in Nigeria making N1.5m.
I only said Amen!
Here's a mind trick: if your mind is focused elsewhere you won't see the opportunities right where you are even if they hit u in the head

if he is successful he would have domestic staff!

1. He isn't successful
2. In USA you don't actually own a house even after you paid all the mortgage! You can't escape property tax ! They would be taking the house event year , failure to pay that you get to loose your house
3. You don't pay driver's ₦80,000 in today's Nigeria you pay more than that
4. If you are earning 1 million upwards monthly in Nigeria, you aren't a lower class, you are in upper middle class and you are doing well
You don't mean it? grin shocked

Is that figure a Lagos, Abuja and Port-harcourt based figure or outside those places? Does it include people who rent or those who own their houses? And why particularly do you place 1m per month earners in the upper middle class category?

You are comparing 70k min monthly wage in Nigeria to 1.5m naira monthly income in Nigeria.

That's not fair!

It is insensitive, irrational and unreasonable

The upper middle class income in US is at least $145,000 us dollars equivalent to 211 million naira (217, 000,000)! This is what you should be comparing with!.

I have been living in the US for almost a decade, and I can tell you that the value of $1,000 in the US is less than 90k in Nigeria.

It is surprising that many of you, including graduates, don't understand that you cannot just arbitrarily convert dollars or pounds to naira in this context.

You cannot start a family anywhere in the US with $1, 000. You would need at least a job that pays you $6,000 per month to think of marriage. An ideal monthly salary would be around $10,000.

With 1.5 million in Nigeria, you can afford to marry a jobless partner, support two children, and own a decent car.

You could eat out in Nigeria with 2k, but eating out in the US would cost you around 25 dollars (35k). I get a haircut every month for $50 (75k) in the US. In Nigeria, I could get the same haircut for around 1k.

If you have a baby in the US, you would need to spend around $2,000 (3 million) per month on day care. In Nigeria, you would pay maybe 50k.

I laugh each time I see some posts on social media converting people's salary in UK/US/CA to naira, thinking the naira equivalent of those figures have the same impact in those countries. It is unfortunate that some people have such mentality.

That being said, if you manage to have some savings in places like US and you bring such to Nigeria, you could tie up a project or more.
This is the response I was looking for. People convert dollar earnings but hardly think of the expenses side. They think of earning in dollar and think of expenses in Naira, when they get over there, they meet a rude shook.

Many of them can’t return for a number of reasons
1) they will return to a lower status then their peers who stayed behind and worked their way up
2) they have little or no savings
3) by the time they have become comfortable abroad they have become used to the system and trapped by the system abroad and too old to start all over in Nigeria
4) pride
5) 98% wish they could come back, the main reason they don’t come back is because by the time they are settled over there they are so invested in the system, they can’t just pull themselves out. They have credit card debts, car loans, mortgage debt etc. plus many also have kids in school. That alone is why most remain.
The number 1 is very important because within the next decade, recent japa folks who cannot uplift themselves in the UK will see their peers in Nigeria advance very high.

California, New York is like Abuja and Lagos
And besides you should be making minimum of 4k per month if you are residing there.
Which is easy.
You would still be poor if you're making 4k$ per month with a rent of 2k$.

In Lagos, if you're making 1.5million, you’ll live comfortably even if you’re paying 4million annual rent as compared to someone earning 4k$ in California and paying half of it in rent.

Let's say it's even 3.7illuob based on the lies you are peddling

1.5 million x 12 = 18 million a year

Everybody’s situation is different, what I don’t like is people making generalizations and leading people here in Nigeria astray. A man who comes from Ajegunle and finds himself abroad has a different perspective on London from someone who comes from a middle class background. A man who is a care worker in London has a different perspective from a doctor or an IT worker in the UK. A man who has an entrepreneurial spirit has a different perspective from someone who is born to be an employee. A man who had no contacts or access in Nigeria is different from someone who knows people. A man without citizenship will have a different experience from someone who doesn’t. All will look at relocating or remaining abroad differently. That’s why whenever I see people glorifying japa I come on to counter and give the other side.

Do you have papers? Are you a citizen or a japa? What kind of job do you do? What kind of environment did you come from in Nigeria? What sort of savings do you have? Do you have children? When you are glorifying living abroad let people know where you are coming from. That way they know why for you it is better and why it may not be better for them.
Words on marble. It's very important people consider these points when reading through comments on social media.

Enough of these noise and comparisons.

If the conditions are better in Nigeria, the folks abroad will return. You don’t need to sweet talk them into returning.

Less than 2% of folks who left have returned, the remaining 98% who stayed back have their reasons. The government of the day should quit these japa propaganda and focus on making Nigeria work for Nigerians
No matter how good a country is people will always japa. It didn't start today. People japa into Nigeria and out of Nigeria. Are Chinese not here? Is their economy bad? Is just that the awareness started recently that's why it looks like there's anything bad about it. Go to Europe there are several nationals there.

We have a large population made up of youths so people will always leave for pastures new.

The op is right in his analysis. There are things that are good in this country. Someone sent four ties when I looked at the label it was £9 each. They are all polyester material made in China. £9 is almost #18,000. This amount or with a little addition can get a good made in China silk tie in Nigeria. There are some drugs and other items that we buy in Nigeria and send to our relations in the UK. They are cheaper here compared to there. Let me disturb your knowledge of economics: what do you think is the reason for lower cost of the items here?

This is a valid convo and I'm kinda enjoying your input though. The reason why I came I was just to make you understand that I'm not sure your statistics of 98% hoping they could come back is true.

I personally don't think 98% of Nigerians abroad are hoping to come back but couldn't. I actually do not agree with this but I agree with ya other inputs.
We also need to specific about the abroad. Anglophone countries differ from non-Anglophone countries. A Nigerian doctor in the US and Saudi Arabia see things differently.
