FIFA changed their Twitter header to the $1.2m stadium built by the NFF.

FIFA’s use of Kebbi stadium in banner sparks outrage, funding row

Global football body FIFA has stirred a storm of reactions across Nigeria after showcasing the Birnin Kebbi Stadium project in Kebbi State — a facility co-funded with the Nigeria Football Federation — on its official social media pages.

FIFA on Saturday used an image of the project, dating back to 2023, as the new profile banner on its official X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.

The image, showing a half-furnished stadium in Birnin Kebbi, quickly went viral.

Built under the FIFA Forward Programme, the stadium was meant to symbolise progress in grassroots football. But as the photo circulated online, fans flooded social media with outrage and speculation.

Some netizens interpreted FIFA’s post as a subtle jab at the NFF, following recent allegations of fund mismanagement.

The uproar comes just days after football critic Chinedu Mobike, via his official Instagram handle #c_mobike, on October 23, 2025, accused the NFF of squandering millions of dollars meant for infrastructure projects, including its twin project in Delta State.

Mobike, in his viral video, claimed that FIFA gave the NFF “1.2 million dollars for two stadiums” — one in Kebbi and another in Ugborodo, Delta State — which, he alleged, “till today did not see daylight.”

Comparing Nigeria’s FIFA-funded projects with those of other nations, Mobike alleged that while “other countries used the funds to truly develop football, Nigeria produced nothing to show.

“The NFF should sit up…There are no active projects promoting football or sports in Nigeria,” Mobike said.

It's really scary, and if the minister or NFF president is called out by the press, they'll resort to insults and bragging about their power. So shameful.

The environment is actually beautiful for football and players, but criminals, herdsmen and terrorists will have a field day harassing spectators/audience in our current reality.

The pitch looks like a FIFA standard artifical football pitch which costs 530000 dollars to 1.3 million dollars.,,or 100000 dollars to 700000 dollars.(looking up 2 estimates on the web)

I suspect most of the money went to the pitch installation. Leaving limited money for the stands.

This is speculative, of course...until we see the actual costs breakdown. But that ain't an ordinary grass pitch...it would cost too much to maintain long term

Of course, corruption. But it is possible that some of the money went to foreign experts who installed the pitch..doubt any nigerian company can do that now.

(Uyo stadium cost 96 million dollars by the way)

N.B: I am not excusing any stealing or corruption, or denying that there was corruption in the project...abeg.

Modifed

It just crossed my mind that there was some under-the pitch drainage (no, not your drainage you know!), put in. Putting in a drainage system at 5 dollars per square foot, and noting that a soccer field is 81000 square feet...that's about 430000 dollars for drainage system

I also came across maintenance and replacement costs, which I will not include here for now.

If you are quoting me to accuse me of defending evil

1.Post your evidence

2. I am not into politics, and regard all politicans, this government inclusive, as evil

3.I have done my research, do yours too.

That’s more of a pitch than a stadium! But looking at the surrounding environment in the pic, i’d leave cynicism aside and rather see the benefits this pitch could bring to the area around it! When you’ve not had much in life or seen much gov’t presence in your village, this kind of thing would mean a lot!

Place the blame at the right place. NFF is independent of the ministry of sports and the govt. I think we were even banned at one time for govt interfering with the NFF.

Re: Checkout the $1.2m Stadium Built By The NFF Posted By FIFA by flexyrule(m):
First off, a $600,000 stadium shouldn't be a priority in that community. But you know... Quota system..

Secondly, $600,000 for this facility is within an acceptable price range. Remember, it's not your average local project. The tuff, underground drainage and other construction would have to meet international standards.

Finally, I think Nigerians have a way of blowing things out of proportion and the population of our netizens isn't helping matters.

News article says $1.2m for two stadia, but I have been reading $1.2m for one stadium in Kebbi State.

Meanwhile... I doubt if FIFA put that image there to ridicule the project. Rather, I think it was put there to symbolize their progress in grassroots football.

The responsible minister will defend this and tell us "he is a professor for stadium construction in practice" his online pawns will also insult anyone that queries this lawn that looks like a farmland.

EFCC will pretend this news does not exist but c9ntinue to chase and extort from useless yahoo boys at midnights

In the beginning, I said it that the reason CORRUPTION/STEALING is first class citizen of Nigeria is because Nigerians from the head to the beggar on the street are thieves, including you reading this now.

The only difference between every Nigerian is LACK OF OPPORTUNITY, if an opportunity presents itself, you’ll realise you’re a bigger thief.
