The Attitude of “Moving On” is Killing Nigeria

“It’s okay, it’s okay, move on, let's not dwell on the issue.”

That single sentence has destroyed more lives, more dreams, and more nations than war ever could. It’s a phrase that ends accountability before it begins. The idea that peace is more important than justice, that silence is maturity, and confrontation is chaos.

From childhood, many Nigerians are raised to “let it go.” When a child is wronged, parents say, “don’t talk too much, just move on.” When someone is cheated in business, they’re told, “leave it for God.” When leaders steal public funds, people say, “it has happened, let’s move on.” But every time we “move on,” we move backward.

We have built a culture that rewards silence and punishes truth. A culture where seeking justice is seen as being troublesome and unpatriotic, and demanding accountability is labeled “wishing your country bad.” The result? A society where wrongdoers know they will never face consequences because the people will “move on.”

This attitude has seeped into every institution, every core of the nation - from politics to religion to family life. We forgive too easily, not because we are kind, but because we are tired. We want quick emotional relief rather than lasting change. We confuse peace with avoidance, and we "progress" with forgetting.

Real healing does not come from pretending nothing happened. Real unity cannot grow on unaddressed wounds. For a nation to heal, it must first face the truth, not bury it under the carpet of “let’s move on.”

Until Nigerians learn to confront injustice, demand accountability, and refuse to “move on” from what truly matters, the cycle will never end. The same corruption, the same impunity, the same tragedies will continue to repeat, because we have refused to pause and demand justice.

As for me, I will continue to confront the truth and enlighten the public

We have to discuss the real issues

Politicians do what they like with zero accountability because Nigerians easily forget and move on.

Nigeria is suffering capital of the world and they easily forget things that's why moving on is very easy for them.

This is what uneducation has done to the masses.
Make as many as you can poor and illiterate, and watch them bow down to you when you throw a grain at them.
That's Nigeria.

Even the ones that people whose voices are heard have spoken about, what has changed? Nothing!
Impunity is the order of the day.

Instead of us to confront the truth and move on as a nation, some people ( politicians) are hell bent on futher destroying this country because of their selfish ambitions.

Nigeria citizens are cowards and hypocrites normally.

Look at fela, when he was singing and criticizing the bad government then, people hid and ran away from him. He was never supported. He walked alone.

If you dey do something with nigeria people, have in the back of your mind that you will solve your troubles alone.
Their love is a false!

That’s how Nigerians are always quick to tell igbos to move n form the civil war, when what started the civil war is still being practiced, another civil war will still happen.

How do you claim to have moved on when you are still suffering the consequences of “moving on” ?

I thought moving on means leaving the past and its burden behind.

Infact, criticizing a government policy or calling out politicians is labeled as tarnishing the image of your country.

And the biggest one on this forum.
Disagreement, diverse opinion, means hate.
The idea EVERYONE must line up to one ideal, one person brought us to where we are today.

So we have done 26 years of democracy without any discernable progress in the lives of most Nigerians.
No accountability, paucity of ideas because we are to swallow what is dished by a privileged few without question.

Never BLINDly take advice from those who wouldn't be affected by consequences of the result

Nigeria, good people, great nation. Nigerians are good people forget, it's just that the environmental system makes the resource scare and cause a rift among ourselves through the politicians and , why because we are not united, so man must day on guard. We are divided among so many lines so much. This is one of the first major problem and ripe for politicians to exploit it . Nigeria is so juicy for them to colobi, but you must be a very strong man to rule or lead Nigeria. The northerners even try and they've known this, at least their language, hausa binds them a bit compared to the southerners.

Nigeria's assets is in its diversified nature and also it's liability. Such a quagmire mastic situation especially for the everyday common man , but guess what, even the common man is compromised or overwhelmed by the already laid system so the circle "might" mostly continue . As one cannot form its own country.

But lastly a little glimpse of hope for countries and its common man especially in same situation as Nigeria. "Technology", that's the third force that can change Nigeria it's already doing so, gradually without even govt or the common man noticing, change is taking place, As at now anyone can be made through the internet. The internet is a Global village. I think the Nigerian govt had tried to shut the pple out once lol , what happened it caused an implosion , that's the third force. Hehe

Remember a certain President Buhari. Blamed for a lot today by a lot of people. But just thirty-two months ago the reverse was the case.

So we have done 26 years of democracy without any discernable progress in the lives of most Nigerians.
No accountability, paucity of ideas because we are to swallow what is dished by a privileged few without question.

It depends on what you are moving on from. Some things hurt you and yours more when you refuse to move on. Some other thing must be resolved to avoid a repeat.

As for Nigeria's problems. It needs a working system and reforms. Not individuals taking the law into their hands. That's an invitation to chaos. What do you mean by justice, because your definition may be different from another's or from the constitution. You cannot demand or get justice unlawfully or individually. Follow the process, improve the process or seek to improve it by legal measures.

Beautiful write up.

I say again, what are the enviable things about the African culture?

Former French president is in prison.

Obasanjo who financed a university, farm and library through graft is a national icon. Buhari, was given a state burial. Tinubu is lauded for financial misappropriation. Take from the poor and give to the rich, that’s his motto. Create an oligarchy that’s in-formidable .
