I’ve noticed it too. Even design-wise, budget phones are no longer looking “cheap.” The realme C71 Marble Green finish, for instance, looks very Premium.

I think it’s a mix of both, brands are genuinely improving, but marketing has also evolved. The competition is fierce, and companies like realme, TECNO, and Xiaomi are clearly paying attention to what users actually want.

Well yea brands been getting real innovative lately, the other day came across a realme device no sure which one but i was really impressed
Leilalee:
So as a phone enthusiast I've been looking and checking out phones and their specs these days, I don’t know if it’s just me, but it feels like smartphone brands are really improving compared to a few years back. Specs like

Design: Phones are looking finer and more premium not just some lazy colour or shabby design. Even brands like TECNO, Infinix and itel that people once laughed at are now making sleek devices that can compete in looks with Samsung and iPhones. Foldables are also becoming a thing with Samsung leading.

Battery life: Back then, power banks were our best friends like you can't own a phone without a power bank. But now, we have phones like Infinix Note, Tecno Pova and Camon, realme C-series, etc, with 5000–6000mAh batteries that can last comfortably through the day even up to 2 days without charge. Plus, fast charging is saving lives.
(I took this battery issue personal lol)

Cameras: It’s no longer just “how many megapixels?” Even mid-range devices and budget phones from Xiaomi (Redmi Note series), realme, and Samsung A-series take solid pictures with night mode, AI processing and stabilization and they come out really great with strong selfie game too.

Software: Updates used to be a big problem, but now many brands (Samsung especially) are promising 3–4 years of OS updates. TECNO and Infinix have also improved HiOS/XOS, and they don’t feel as “heavy” as before.

Pricing: Omg this is the best part, you don’t have to spend so much for good performance, before when you're talking about a really good phone you're talking 400-500k upwards but now, mid-range phones like realme C71, Samsung A15, or Redmi Note series are giving premium features at more affordable prices without breaking the bank infact.

It’s making me wonder and think, are smartphone brands finally listening to users ( especially about battery, durability, updates), or is it just better marketing and packaging? Or is it hype?

You didn't even talk about fast charging, less than an hour you've already gotten your phone up to full percentage before we were talking 2hrs+. I love the overall improvement they made o even though it might be just hype or whatnot
This charging ehhh, really a lifesaver. And I love this new rule of all new devices using Type-C wey EU pass

You’re not wrong, competition has really pushed brands to level up, even in the budget range.

phones under ₦200k now do things that used to be exclusive to flagships a few years ago.

Also specs and build quality have improved a lot, the gap between midrange and high-end is getting smaller.
