The Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitution Review has unanimously approved the creation of an additional state in the South-East geo-political zone.

When created, the South-East will be at par with the South-South, South-West, North-Central and North-East zones with six states.

The South-East is the only geo-political zone with five states comprising Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states.

The North-West comprises seven states made up of Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto and Jigawa states.

The resolution of the committee was reached during a two-day retreat in Lagos on Saturday, where it reviewed 55 proposals for state creation across the country.

The session, chaired by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and co-chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, deliberated on the subject matter and resolved that in the spirit of fairness and equity, the Federal Government should create another state for the region.

Kalu, who joined other lawmakers to champion additional state creation for the region, argued that a new state would give the people a sense of belonging.

A statement on Saturday by the media unit of the joint committee quoted members as voting in favour of granting additional states to the South-East.

“Following the deliberations, Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) moved a motion for the creation of the new state, which was seconded by Hon Ibrahim Isiaka (Ifo/Ewekoro, Ogun State).

“The motion received the unanimous support of committee members and was adopted,” the statement read in part.

Similarly, the committee also established a sub-committee to consider the creation of additional states and local government areas across all six geo-political zones, noting that a total of 278 proposals were submitted for review.

Speaking at the event, Jibrin urged members to rally support among their colleagues at the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly to ensure the resolutions sail through during voting.

“We need to strengthen what we have started so that all parts of the country will key into this process.

“By the time we get to the actual voting, we should already have the buy-in of all stakeholders—from both chambers and the State Houses of Assembly,” the Deputy Senate President was quoted as saying.

In addition, it's important to ensure that ALL the 12 Yoruba LGAs out of the 16 LGAs in Kwara and the Yoruba LGAs of Kogi State of North Central Nigeria and any other Yoruba communities who have called for it in videos I have seen especially in Ovia South West LGA in Edo State are merged after referendums with the rest of the South West region for relative homogeneity. If it's expedient, a referendum can be done to bring the Itsekiris in too based off of the fact that the parent ethnic group of the Itsekiris are the Yorubas of Ijebu, Ilaje and Ile Ife origins (regardless of Prince Ginuwa (his mother was from Ile Ife and the ONLY queen of Oba Olua who was NOT born in Benin back in the 1400s) and his 70 male followers (children of Benin noble men) who left Benin and migrated to Ode Itsekiri an Ijebu settlement under Chief Lenuwa in 1480).

The same can be done for the Nupes of the 2 Nupe LGAs of Kwara North to be merged with their Nupe cousins in Niger State and/or create a new Nupe State for them and fortunately the current Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State is paternally and maternally a Nupe guy. Likewise, the 2 Bariba LGAs (or Batonu ethnic group) of Kwara North of which the U.S.-based academic Farooq Kperogi is from can choose where they want to join especially Niger State but a larger number of Baribas are indigenous to Benin Republic where they have a larger landmass than Baribaland in Kwara State, Nigeria.

The Tivs in Taraba, Nassarawa, parts of Northern Cross River, etc, can be merged into Benue State and/or create a new Tiv State for them since they have a huge landmass which is BIGGER than even the South East region. Same can be done for several other ethnic groups spread across different regions and States to create harmony.

These boundary adjustments bringing similar ethnic groups scattered in different multiethnic States together in one single State and this would further reduce the cases of complaints abouth ethnic marginalization by bigger ethnicities.

If this is NOT done now, it will likely NEVER be done by any Federal government again. OBJ was the President for 8 years yet NO attempt was made by OBJ and his team to merged the Yorubas of Kwara and Kogi States with the rest of their kith and kin in the West of Nigeria or create a separate new State for them. If the Tinubu goverment does these boundary adjustments, many will remember him for changing the geopolitical dynamics of Nigeria created by the British Colonialists that encouraged the stagnation of Nigeria for decades before and after 1960 by the minority political and ethnic hegemonists.

.. where is the money to fund this new state.. this state will need to have a state government, deputy governor, commissioners, local government chairmen, state secretariat, civil servants, federal and state ministries, agencies , federal police, military and many other things..all this needed to be funded by the federal government allocation..2025 budget out of 50 trillion naira for 2025 budget the budget have a deficit of 13 trillion naira which will be funded by borrowings and loans .. federal government and state government are even struggling to develop the other existing 36 states and take care of them and the citizens of those states...then another new state want to be added
